setting up for wireless

I've been enticed by this forum (and RC) to consider a netbook, so I called my isp (charter) to see what it would take to go wireless. They want $50 for installation fee to switch out the modem for a wireless one, plus additional per month fee for the modem rental. He said that would be $9, it is $6 now. I have a Belkin Wireless Router 2.4GHz, 802.11g, 54Mbps that I bought 2 or 3 years ago, but never even opened the box. I was going to try to set up my previous pc to access the web when I got high speed , but I chickened out and never gor around to it. Can I set this unit up and use this to get online with the netbook? I'm looking at an Acer from Walmart, see link. I would mainly be using this for couch-surfing. Thanks for any comments or suggestions you might have, either about the Belkin, Acer or whatever.
