AVG anti-virus 8.0 (free) and found 0 'threats' but 217 'warnings' (trojan.foron;

Those 217 warnings are actually the registry keys that the SpybotSD 'immunize' feature makes. Harmless keys that are actually protection against the named infections.

Because the computer is showing symptoms still run Malwarebytes

one of the known problems with the new AVG 8 is a slow down of the pc plus the showing false positives for parts of spybot and spywareblaster. If you do a search here for the AVG post you will find much about these issues. One of the reasons for the slow down is the added components in the new AVG8 there is a method you can use to download and reinstall AVG8 to not include these. I just posted the info from the AVG faq about that on one of the other threads here.

I too would advise installing superantispyware free then update and run full scan.
Look for other AVG threads for the relevant info.

i installed super anti-spyware, updated it, and did a whole computer scan that resulted in no malware.

thus, i disabled link scanner, resident shield, automatic update manager, and the e-mail scanner in AVG 8.0 and noticed a marked difference in the speed of the computer. i tried letting resident shield be active, but that still caused my computer to run rather slowly.

it seems that the new AVG is quite a bit of trouble with its functions are inferring with spybot s&d and spyware blaster. as of now, only the anti-virus; anti-spyware, and the license components of AVG are 'active' on my computer; therefore, my questions become:

is it necessary to have AVG running from start-up?

since i've disabled the resident shield, will having AVG running in the background provide me with some automatic, subtle protection?

i currently have win patrol, zone alarm (and AVG) running in the background. should i have super anti-spyware running in the background as well?

unless you purchase superantispyware you can only use it as an on demand scanner, that is all I use it as. I hit the update button on it and do a full scan at least once a week.
I also keep my spywareblaster updated as well, you could add spywareguard also by javacool and free which does run active

You might want to consider trying Avast free for your antivirus which is what many are doing since the new AVG is causing issues for some people. It is also a very good free AV.

i remember the day when i downloaded AVG and was impressed by its simplicity, but it has becoming too fancy when all i want it to do it scan for viruses and get rid of them. [sigh] AVG is causing so much trouble and has so many unnecessary features, i decided to remove it from my start-up list.

although i still have it on my computer, i'm thinking about switching to another anti-virus program.

i'm afraid to download avast, as the postings on this forum indicate that it's as cumbersome as AVG. i've heard of Comodo & Antivir. which do you recommend?

I have heard pretty much good stuff about Avast and Antivir both so either one would be a good choice. Just be sure you have AVG fully removed from your pc since you can only have one antivirus at a time on it.

What you may have read here about Avast was one person had a corrupt download or something similar. It is a perfectly good and easy program to use. So are Antivir or Comodo, I have used all of them over time. Not sure why I removed Comodo LOL, probably when I removed their firewall.

well, i finally uninstalled AVG 8 (for the 2nd time) and will soon install antivir.

after uninstalling AVG, this strange DLL from AVG shows up in winpatrol IE helpers: C:\PROGRAM FILES\AVG\AVG8\AVGSSIE.DLL

what is this DLL, and why did it appear after AVG is uninstalled?

that is part of that stupid linkscanner that is now in AVG8

i find it strange that the DLL appears AFTER my uninstalling AVG 8. all this stuff is sure giving me a headache.

well, i installed antivir, and it's okay, but for the update, i can't run it from the antivir window (it keeps saying that 'scheduler is not loaded'). i have to run the preupd.exe from the antivir program files. has anyone run into this problem?

also, my computer now takes 2 minutes to start up. perhaps there's too much unnecessary stuff in the registry? any recommendations for fixing this problem or should i just leave it alone?
