Chabby Update

Thought I would start a new thread to save scrolling.....and I am so thankful for your good wishes and good thoughts.

I gave her 7 MG pheno barb and 2 mg valium before bed....and she has a couple of short seizures 30 minutes apart and zonked...I woke once adn she was asleep....and I slept too.

This morning she was groggy....Iw oke at 7 and wanted to get some more valium into her....so we came down, she pottied and I geve her 2 mg valium adn the phenobarb, she ate breakfast and about 8:10 the vet called and said the results of the blood test had come back and she had less than half the theraputic dosage of phenobarb in her blood....

So we are giving her 15 mg phenobarb, cutting out the valium unless she starts with the cluster seizures.....and wills ee what's what in a month or more....

So we are in a holding pattern.....

I am wondering of there has been some brain damage, perhaps a stroke which caused all the seizures...or is it just fog left from all the storms in her brain or residual drugs....

Again thanks for the good wishes.....and Chabby gives a foggy sniff and a lick....she's too far out of it to wag her tail.

Barnmom's suggestions reminded me of my own dog's name, so I have to tell the story. My children were about 7 years old when we were searching for a sable colored collie. We had gone to a collie show and we saw a collie named "Topaz". My son thought that was really cool and said "Mom, when we get our collie I want to name her Tanzanite because you love that stone." Well, the rest of us tried to explain to him that Topaz was a great name for a sable colored dog because a topaz is brown colored, but Tanzanite would be kind of silly because they are blue-ish. He kept insisting and we just rolled our eyes and figured we'd deal with it when we finally found a dog. Several months later our breeder called and said she had a litter with a sable female that she could sell to us because she had a fleck of blue in her eye and she could not be shown. My son was thrilled and we all agreed that Tanzanite was the perfect name since she has a Tanzanite in her eye. We call her Tanzi and know that she was meant for our family. We love the blue in her eye.

Oh, Barb, what a sad and sorry tale. Poor little guy. I shudder to think. I think it is SOP to be on antibiotics after a procedure like that, though. I guess it didn't work on whatever bug had him sick. : ( I would die. I had a few tooth abscesses growing up, on my back molars, and the dentist would just slice them open and drain. Wonder why they just remove the tooth on these guys. Certainly, an abscess needs to be taken care of. Abscesses can cause systemic blood poisining too (whatever the correct term is). As far as routine care, it probably is a good idea to wipe the teeth down periodically. My vet recommends gauze and hydrogen peroxide to get the scum off, esp the back teeth. Two of my kitties would probably tolerate that well. Well, my cats get better medical care (and food!) than I do. I hadn't had my own teeth done in about 15 years. Ha, when I had them done this Summer, the hygienist looked like a deer caught in headlights when I answered that question! She was also in shock when my gums/teeth came up at 3's and 2's (very good). And I only had two cavities to be filled. Maybe that doesn't speak, overall, for what gets into my blood from chewing, but my teeth and gums are in good shape from daily care. One of the big reasons I had stopped getting my teeth done, though, was after reading about disease transferance through the dental drills and other tools. And I also remember how our family dentist had died of some weird (blood, as I recall) disease. Even with all the cleaning they do, there can be remnants from other patients stuck on or lodged in the tools. And, as I recall, there is specific difficulty in managing cross-contamination, in dentistry, with respect to prion diseases. I wonder if they're as careful with the instruments for animals as they're learning to be with people. Will have to ask my vet! They did have a new way of cleaning teeth, though, which I really liked! and the tool would seem safer. Forget the name, but it was with a strong water jet. They just blast the gums and teeth, like a power wash. Wouldn't want to take a blue light to that exam room or tech, though, lol.

Thanks for filling in the gap between the two numbers Annie. Like Annie, I eat foods with raw eggs and prefer my steak and even my hamburgers (which are more risky because when you sear a steak with the inside medium rare, the inside was never exposed directly to external contamination but the some inside of your hamburger was on the outside) medium rare. And I eat raw fish in sushi. So far the only two times I've had food poisoning were when I was on business trips. The more recent time, nothing that I had eaten was a typical suspect so my guess is that the restaurant wasn't careful enough about cross contamination or had an employee not washing hands carefully enough. And we use to make quick eggnog (milk with a raw egg and some vanilla in the blender) for my kids one of whom went through a period as a very picky eater so it was one way to get some protein into his diet at the time. I also keep in mind that it the higher the bacterial load the more likely it is to make you sick. A few salmonella cells in a raw egg that has been kept refrigerated will probably be fought off by my immune system. I wouldn't for instance make eggnog, let it sit on the counter for half a day and then drink it. Just in case (IIRC the likelihood that an egg carries salmonella was something like 1 in 20,000) the egg had salmonella, I don't want to let something with raw egg sit at a danger zone temperature for an extended period of time. Ice cream has an advantage there - you know it has been kept cold since it was made. On the other hand, if I had guests over, I would at least let them know that there was raw egg in something and have an alternative because I think they should be able to make that decision for themselves and who knows who has a compromised immune system. And my son and DIL don't want my granddaughter to be fed food with raw eggs. Since children under 5 have salmonella diagnosed at a higher rate than adults (perhaps because it takes less to get them dangerously dehydrated or because they have less immunity?) that seems to be a sensible precaution. I've put in the link for how to cook eggs enough to kill salmonella while still being able to use them in raw egg recipes. This is a compromise for those who need it. I remember reading that someone tested the pasturized egg whites vs regular egg whites and they didn't whip to as much volume. That link also mentions using acidity to kill salmonella. You have to get the PH down to 4.0. If you make mayo and let it sit for a while before you mix it with something else, that may do it. Just tossing some lemon juice along with the egg into your ice cream mix probably wouldn't because the acidity of the lemon juice would be diluted too much by the other stuff. I'm glad she's at least a bit better, and if they get enough phenobarb into her system, hopefully she'll stablilize.

We had some issues until they got Amanda's seizure meds right, so I don't see why a dog would be any different.

Hugs to you and good doggie vibes coming from Cooper, he's visiting but he still hope Chabby feels better quickly.

Linda, I missed your thread yesterday. I am so sorry Chabby and you are going through this. Our third golden had seizures. I know how you feel watching, helpless. Knowing her phenobarb level is low gives you a direction to go for treating the seizures. You have my prayers.

Well, a holding pattern isn't so bad. I don't know alot about seizures, but it sounds like the prognosis is favorable.

I just checked with Mo and Chess and they gave me the go ahead to send a bunch more wet doggie kisses to little Chabarita. So here you go with a few sniffs tossed into the mix.

She's looking like she is gradually getting reaquainted with the world....sniffs at things like she's trying to remember...acts to me like she's had electroshock therapy....
But I'll take that over constantly seizing!

Good news that she's stopped seizing! I'm sure that there must be some residual "dullness" from all that brain activity, however I'm hoping that she "brightens" up more everyday!

Linda, again, I don't have any experience with dogs, only with Amanda, but when she had a severe seizure, she was "out of it" for a day or two, and felt "like someone beat her up". I could talk to her after a seizure and she'd give me the right answers but didn't even remember the conversation.

So, give Chabby a couple of days to recover and she might be much like her old self, I hope.

Hang in there, and give Chabby an extra hug or two from me.

Yep....was a good night....but for company that stayed too late.
I think I have decided that one of the reasons she's moving slowly is because she is stiff and sore muscles from all the seizing...
Thanks Annie for the words "felt like someone beat her up"....I suspect that's the way she feels....so I gave her a little bit of baby asprin for an 8 pound dog.

Oh Linda, I hope she feels better today. Beyond the neurological stuff, just think about how much "work" it is for those muscles to spasm like that. Poor Chabby, she probably feels like she got hit by a truck. I hope the aspirin helped.

Thanks guys.....she's acting pretty much like her old self....but clingy. You know how a small child who has been sick doesn't want you out of it's sight....that's the way she is.....loud whining and yipping if I step out with the garbage....

LindaC, Amanda's neurologist says the same thing, that's there's no such thing as a mammal that doesn't seize, just those who haven't seized yet.

Poor Chabby, she's probably trusting you to take care of her and she's afraid to be without you in case something happens. It's hard to explain things to a dog...

I'm sure glad she's feeling so much better.

we're hoping this lasts....we will do blood level check in a couple of weeks.
The thing is your body ( or a dogs) becomes adjusted to phenobarb and it loses it's ability to "zonk you out".

She's back to her rotton self!!
Hard to believe that a week ago she was circling aimlessly in a daze...didn't know her favorite people when they came to visit, and 2 days before that seizing over and over again!
I believe in the power of the CF!!...Or perhaps it's more like loving concern...
