Hi everyone - just heard from the hospital and they're concerned because she's depressed, not eating and not wanting to walk. We're heading out there shortly to visit to see her.

Good news - she must be feeling all the vibes from you and your pets :)

She lifted her head up as soon as she saw us and finally started to eat, although it's obvious she's exhausted. The surgeon suggested we bring her some homemade food (the boiled hamburger/white rice routine) so we rushed home (we're an hour away), cooked a big container and rushed back to get there before visiting hours end.

The surgeon walked out with a big smile on her face because after our earlier visit they wheeled Chammi outside on a gurney and she was able to walk a little and potty on her own. So, they moved her to a run with lots of blankets and she got up on her own. When we walked in, she definitely acknowledged us but seemed really wiped out (wasn't interested in food) so we gave her kisses and let her sleep. I'm hoping she was just tired from going outside.

Hoping she continues to get stronger overnight.

I just saw this-I am so glad Chammi is doing well!
We had a golden who chewed sticks. We thought she spit out the pieces, but not all of them apparently. She had emergency surgery for an obstructed cecum that turned out to be full of stick bits. No matter how much you watch, dogs are sneaky!

A vet once told me that Goldie's would eat razorblades if given half a chance, and ours certainly ate plenty of other inedibles! Anyway, I'm happy Chammi is doing better. Sending best wishes and good vibes for a continued path of recovery.

IIRC, you're in NJ? Where did Chammi have her surgery done? Hope Chammi's back to her own self soon - except for her inedible object eating habit. My nephew recently got 2 golden pups after his Logan passed away - the 5 month old male puppy apparently ate a kids sock and had to have surgery already!

I had a litter of pups a few months ago, and I was looking for a home for one. A woman called, sad story, had just lost their 12 yr old Golden. She then said that they couldn't pay more than $400 for a puppy, which is the price for a BYB puppy with questionable heritage around here. I told her that almost every vet bill I have costs almost that much, and she should reconsider whether her family can even afford even a free puppy. Yeah, it's the sticks and the rocks and the socks and the foxtails up the nose or in the ears.

When we did our will several years ago we had 5 pets. Of course, I wanted them included in my will so that they would be taken care of and provided for if something should happen to all four of us at once. I told our attorney who was to get "custody" of our pets, and then the attorney suggested $10,000 to care for them, with everything else in our estate (house, life insurance, stocks, etc.) going to our nieces and nephews. We agreed. The next couple of months after that I started realizing that every trip to PetsMart for cat litter, Milkbones, toys, etc. was at least $100 dollars. Every vet trip was at least $200, and usually $400 or more. Every monthly grooming trip was $80. I called the attorney back and told her that I thought it was ridiculous to think that someone could care for 5 pets properly for their lifetime for just $10,000. I decided that my pets deserved better. My pets and their caregiver will now get a MUCH bigger chunk, not the nieces and nephews that I rarely see.

Update this morning is not so good. She's doing okay (eating, getting up, etc.) but is showing some neurological problems - very wobbly and knuckling under in a rear foot (She was having a few minor issues before this that we were in the process of evaluating). The vet is hoping we can take her home tomorrow, but I have a feeling it will simply be to spend some time saying good bye. Not giving up hope but just trying to be realistic.

Helene/blubird - She's at Red Bank, although we usually use UPenn vet school. I wasn't sure I had enough time to get her to Philly so opted for Red Bank, which we've used for other stuff.

We're going to see her shortly.

Sue, gosh I hate things are not good this morning. Don't give up hope. I'll be praying for Chammie and Aleksi and I will say a special prayer too. What a beautiful dog Chammie is!

I hate Chammi is not doing as well this morning. Take comfort that she is not in pain and she loves being with you. If she doesn't improve, it's a much better way to spend her last days than with her in pain and you all at the animal hospital. You have my heart. We foster goldens for a rescue organization, and have taken some of the oldest and sickest dogs. It's so heartbreaking but they are loved and happy while they are with us. Hoping for the best. Judy

Ellen, my nieghbors Golden was infamous at the vets for the things he consumed and survived! Sanitary pads, underwear, SOS pads, whole wooden popsicle sticks, NOT chewed, beer caps, socks....and he made it to 17. Poop pick ups were always interesting. Sweet and loveable but dum ber than a box of rocks.

My friend Mike's golden 'Buddy' once ate an entire 40 oz beer bottle! All that glass, and nothing ever wrong with him. My vet told me when I got Duke that if he lived past 2-3 he would usually make it awhile. They got so many labs and goldens at the vets that had to have surgery for ingested foreign items! Even a superball one time!

My MIL's Miniature Schnauzer finally did herself in eating rocks. No matter how well they watched her and how many rocks they removed from the very tiny yard, she still managed to find another. Her half sister is a brighter bulb. They still have her.

Sorry to hear Chammi's having a tough time recuperating. Red Bank is excellent. My sister has used Red Bank for chemo for her late pug and was very pleased with them. We usually use Garden State Veterinary in Tinton Falls- our vet has a good working relationship with them.

Spencer the chocolate lab and Katie the shepherd mutt are sending doggy tail wags for luck - and we've all got our fingers and toes crossed- lots of energy flowing here for Chammi.
