She's still a puppy. I think if you can offer consistent kind training, she will respond well. It sounds as though no one has bothered to properly work with her.

It all depends on what you are willing to put up with. What your limits are. This poor little sweetie sure doesn't need another foster home only to be moved on again.

Sounds like it would be an undertaking requiring lots of time and attention....both of which I know you would give...if that's what you want to do.

I agree with both posts and add to it, it sounds like she's having to vie for attention which you'll be able to give her loads of and, consequently, would likely settle down greatly. I really really feel for her. What will happen if you don't take her in?

First I want to tell you that I'm delighted to hear that you are looking for a doggie, and that you are considering giving a far better life to a pup that has had hard times.

Only you can decide if this could be the right dog for you but, Ollie was totally untrained except for being housebroken, when we got him. He wanted attention, and at first had to be very close to one of us, but was neither aggressive nor did he shy away from anyone.

As far as the training, I think it is very possible. Ollie is the first dog we didn't send to boarding school for training and I am so glad we went to school with him and got trained ourselves! I am absolutely amazed at the new psychology (new to me anyway) of training dogs.

We didn't have a poop or pee problem but all of sudden our son's 5 year old Shih Poo starting peeing in the house. Our trainers advice was to kennel him again, as they did when they were doing housebreaking training initially, and treat and praise him lavishly when they let him outside and he did the right thing.

As far as retraining the aggressive snapping and or barking at people (babies or adults), our trainer would have said to be right there with a treat in hand and call the dog to you, and treat her, the instant she started to come to you instead of moving towards the child or starting to bark. We used this tactic very successfully when Ollie started barking at everyone who came to our door, it even worked when I was upstairs and he was downstairs watching and barking as someone walked by the house. I would call him upstairs, making it sound like there was a fun party where I was and immediately treat him for coming. The trainers explanation was not, as I had thought, that he was protecting his new house but instead that he was afraid someone was going to take us away from him and he would have another loss.

In the same way you can train her not to sleep in the bed, gently put her on the floor and praise and treat her (small treats over and over and over). As for yowling in the kennel, buy earplugs and ignore it. Tell her what a good girl she is when she's been quiet for a little bit and you release her and treat her. She'll adjust.

I have really been amazed at what we have been able to do with Ollie, we had a perfect San Francisco vacation with him going out to lunch (long two hour lunches) three times with me to outdoor restaurants and to dinners at friends homes where his behavior was really really good. He was fine when we had to crate him twice in the apartment we rented when we went out to indoor restaurants - I'm sure he would have been fine uncrated but the responsible thing to do was to make sure he couldn't succumb to any temptation in a strange place when he was left alone.

I hope you'll meet her - you'll know if you will love each other - and the training can happen. You know how smart poodles are, but you are smarter.

Sounds like no one has trained the poor thing at all. So if you are up to a doggy boot camp challenge, go for it Linda. She will need you to teach her who is boss, and what the boss expects, as soon as she steps foot in your home. Are you up to it?

I thought sleeping in the bed was a good thing. I love sleeping with my dog and two cats..... it gets crowded, but I love it.

Sounds like you have a tough decision to make, and only you will be able to make that call.

I agree with the others, Linda. I believe she will present a challenge, but not one that can't be met/overcome.

She needs some love and stability. So many people "don't want her" without really ever giving her what she needs to prove she's worthy of their love.

Only you can make the decision, but I do believe if you decide to meet/adopt her, you have what it takes to teach her to be a great dog!

Linda, I know you are used to the toy size poodle, but have you ever considered the miniature poodle? I don't think they have the joint and hip issues that the smaller dogs might have. My Andy is now 12 years old and has never had any major illnesses. He is very healthy and the way he was running around the house last night, you would never know he was a "mature" doggie. He only weighs ten pounds and has never put on excess weight - could be why he is so healthy. He does have problems sometimes getting up the front porch steps....but then, I have problems getting up them myself at times. His legs are longer than a toy poodle's, but he is still a small dog.

My first poodle was a miniature....she weighed about 15 pounds...at the top of the size scale for a miniature.
I could do a 10 pound dog. But from my research, there isn't any difference in the hip problems etc with a toy or a standard....it's just something that seemed to come when poodles were so over bred and now has to be bred out of the line.
Keep me in mind anyone who knows of a poodle breeder....NOT a puppy mill!!!

Sigh.....got a line on another baby...

Congratulations, Linda. I had a small toy poodle when I was in high school, she was apricot. Her name was Fifi Antoinette, but we called her Judy, I don't know why, LOL.

Too bad for the other poor doggie, though, I sure hope she finds someone to love her.

I feel sorry about the other poor dog....found out later from the original owner that they decided to go into greyhound rescue and the greyhounds would hurt the poodle so they gave her to someone to find a home for her.
And as far as I know....there are no greyhounds that they have rescued.
I can't save every homeless dog....although I would like to.

Eileen, I agree, I've known a couple of rescued greyhounds and they were sweethearts, I can't imagine them aggressive.

Linda, none of us can rescue them all. Sigh. And that's why I no longer volunteer at the animal shelter, I just donate. I'd have to get a kennel license for all the animals I'd bring home!

There was a chocolate lab up at the lake with the name of Candy. Simple and plain though. She and Lucy would play together when they were up for the weekend. Just like kids, she would come over and see if Lucy could come to play. : )

My friends, the Hersheys, always have a chocolate lab or 2...
Can't remember the names over the years...but with that last name it was all a natural...once they had a chocolate and a light yellow....called Hugs and Kisses.

Barnmom's suggestions reminded me of my own dog's name, so I have to tell the story. My children were about 7 years old when we were searching for a sable colored collie. We had gone to a collie show and we saw a collie named "Topaz". My son thought that was really cool and said "Mom, when we get our collie I want to name her Tanzanite because you love that stone." Well, the rest of us tried to explain to him that Topaz was a great name for a sable colored dog because a topaz is brown colored, but Tanzanite would be kind of silly because they are blue-ish. He kept insisting and we just rolled our eyes and figured we'd deal with it when we finally found a dog. Several months later our breeder called and said she had a litter with a sable female that she could sell to us because she had a fleck of blue in her eye and she could not be shown. My son was thrilled and we all agreed that Tanzanite was the perfect name since she has a Tanzanite in her eye. We call her Tanzi and know that she was meant for our family. We love the blue in her eye.

Sometimes you know when as my daughter says "When you look in to that little face"...a strong contender is Creme de Chocolate....called Latte and for no reason other than I love the opera...Tosca!...but she would have to be a "Tosca" kind of dog!! Vain, jealous and willing to kill for those she loves!

But of course! She's a Leo after all.
