Question about trojans

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question...

Can you infect your computer with a trojan just by clicking on an URL?

I ask because I received what I now believe to be a lure saying I received an e-card from a family member from all-yours.net. When I tried to click on the URL in the message, Firefox said it was taking too long to load the page and I got no further. I then, stupidly, tried the other URL in the message but didn't get anywhere either. I then tried to access the all-yours.net website directly and the pull-down menu of my search window mentioned all-yours.net trojans so I investigated further and learned that this is a problem though my supposed card # wasn't the one listed as the usual trojan lure.

I ran my McAfee virus scan and found nothing. Is there something else I need to do or am I in the clear?

Sounds like you have been tricked into downloading a trojan. I would try the free Trend online housecall and if you need further help google 'all-yours.net trojan'.

Thanks for your response bob414. I scanned with McAfee already but I read somewhere even a clean scan might not mean you're really free of a compromise.

Is there an easy way to check my computer manually?

Would the fact that the URL didn't end up opening a page mean that the trojan didn't get into my system in the first place??

AVG completed, and after some digging I found: 1) 1 threat found 2) 1 file healed 3) 1 file deleted This seems to say the Trojan was found and "killed".

You ask, "Do I think I have one?" I don't know. Everything is working OK as far as I can see. But some time ago a pop-up appeared saying that I had encountered malware and that I should use "Ultimate Cleaner" to get rid of it. The pop-up looked like something from Microsoft, so I assumed it was a good service of the company. I then clicked "OK" for the cleanup. After a moment or two a new window popped up with around a hundred "infections" shown in a log. It suggested that I pay some $29 or so for the "Ultimate Cleaner" which would get rid of the bad stuff. I was immediately suspicious. After a bit of research I learned that Ultimate Cleaner is a malware scam. I don't know if my actions had allowed it into my computer or not, and I have not seen any visible problems. Second cause for concern: Yesterday, an alert appeared from Trend micro (my anti virus program) warning me of a trojan horse "ht----" something or other from the site I was viewing. I immediately killed the web page I was viewing and ran a scan on TrendMicro antivirus program which showed nothing. I doubt if this second occasion downloaded anything, but I wonder. RB

yes you are fine, and yes you can have several browsers with no problem, you can even have more than one type open at the same time if you need to. When you get firefox it will ask if you want to make it your default you can say no and leave your Ie default if you prefer, it will also ask if you want it to import your favorites list from Ie say yes to that and any other things it ask to import and it will then set up your firefox with all the same faves as you have on Ie, will not touch the Ie settings at all will just copy it all over for you. To use firefox once installed all you do is click on the firefox icon on your desktop and it will open up a browser window just like you do with IE. no no you do not clean anything with hijack this you must go to the landzdown forum that was listed and start a thread there in the hijackthis area then post your results from hijack this there in your post, also tell them everything you have done they will come and help you with step by step directions, the hijackthis produces a log file that is what you need to post there for them to review so they know what steps to take, the team there is one of the best on the net so be assured they will help you but it takes time it is not a one deal cure all it is a step by step proceedure. Just tell Corrine that I and Zep sent you there and you can also link back to this thread here so they can see this info. First, yes you can get a trojan by clicking on a url or link if the link has a .exe file extension.
Probably since the page didn't load just means it timed out because the server was busy or not responding. This sometimes happens if the website is heavy with graphics and you have dial-up.
I don't think you have much to worry about. If a trojan tried to install, your McAfee would have sent up a red flag.

http://all-yours.net/ looks fine to me. I've had problems sometimes with e-cards loading because of all the flash animation, graphics and music all trying to load at the same time, which causes a time out with the browser, usually around 30 seconds.

Manually not much you can do unless the name of the installed trojan is known.

You can click start/run/ and type> MRT to run a scan with the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

You can download The Cleaner for a 30 free trial, it is a trojan software. I was told to do that when I was infected in a graphics site.
