Slow computer and lots of stuff running in the background

I hope someone can help, at least a little. You always have been great in the past. I am using a compaq laptop with windows xp (if you need more info and will tell me where to find it, I will gladly provide it!). It's a couple of years old. It has slowed down greatly in the last 3-4 months. DS has had to use it for some college courses he took, but as far as I know, didn't download any programs while doing so. The only thing I have downloaded, which did slow it down some & I expected it to, was Embird, for my embroidery machine so I can convert designs from cd's to the special card the machine takes. These are the programs the computer says are running in the background. I also get a little window popping up in the lower right corner saying my virtual memory is low.

I will list Image Name, User name, CPU as the task manager has listed them.

The memory usage on alot of these are tremendous! Some keep changing while I write them down.

I have tried to google them to see what they do, and what I can do with them, but I understand none of it. My eyes are crossing! I have run my Norton antivirus with updates, I have run my spyware. I thought it might be all the photos I had stored. I downloaded them to dvd and external hard drive (did full back up)and deleted most of the photos, did a disk defrag. nothing has helped. I really hope you can.

ps, when I typed the list, I had more spaces between the image name, user name, and CPU. I hope you can read this the way it shows here.

Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Â Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
Â By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Â Click on Install.
Â It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Â Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Â Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Â Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Kentuck- I don't think a couple seconds spike to 99-100% is alarming. Mine does this occasionally when opening some programs or my browser. I think it's only an issue if you have a spike and it stays up there. For example, once in a while my Windows Media Player hangs up if I try to play a video at some sites and it ties up my computer at 100% until I go into the Task Manager and select it and shut it down. As for your question about what processes are essential, here is a link that lists the main background processes by their (sometimes inscrutable) names, and tells you what they do. Make sure you have the "Show processes from all users" box checked and compare the list of names. Some of the names you'll have will be processes specific to things like your antivirus, and won't be listed here. For those that aren't, just write the name down and do a Google search. (Sometimes a virus will show up in this list, although I don't think that's your problem.) As I write this, I have 53 processes in the background. I'd have more if I hadn't prevented things like RealPlayer and Quicktime from starting each time I bootup. Here is a link that might be useful: WinTasks Process Library

Charlene any time you are going to get things like your fonts or any other downloads like that make it a habit to always before you open the file on your pc, immediately after you download it just go to that file and right click and choose to scan it with your antivirus program then make sure your malwarebytes is updated and do the right click scan and use malwarebytes too, if you do this you will prevent opening a potential infected file to your pc. Keeping malwarebytes updated is essential so that when you do a right click scan it has all the latest definitions, your antivirus program gets them automatically but with malwarbytes you have to open the program and hit update. Also running malwarebytes at least once a week, fully updated and full scan is a very good habit to get into. and we have to all remember when something is offered to us free sometimes there is a reason and it comes with a nasty little bonus unfortunately they love to add those to stuff like wallpaper, fonts, smilies, all the nice fun stuff. linux is great for kids to use! if you have an old pc that you could not get to work well with windows anymore because it is just old and not powerful then it will probably run linux just fine since linux uses much less space and memory. Just use one of the live cd's and run it right off the cd rom drive if you want, they can still use the browser to surf all they want and pretty much anything else they want to do but nothing gets installed and nothing gets infected! Once you have the browser up it is just like using firefox on windows, I had company recently that asked if they could use my pc to check email and play some online games etc, I said sure and I pulled up firefox for them and after about 10 mins I walked over and said everything ok? Yes fine. I said so have you used linux before, NO , well you are now! they could not believe it, I had to prove it to them. They left my house with the instructions on getting a copy! Those grandkids just do the darnedest things LOL

How do you get yourself into these problems? Because you have a problem and are trying to fix it rather than ignore it or dump your problem on someone else. I find that to be very admirable. The good thing about this is you will be learning a lot in the process of getting things back on track. The down side is it is going to take a little bit of time if we do it here. Your are very lucky because there is a lot of experience her and, super people willing to help. There should be no fear of what to do with what fix-it finds if you decide to go that route. They offer several bits of information as to what found information does, and a suggestion of what you should let fix-it do, to fix your computer. You can undo anything fix-it does, with the click of a button. If you go to do anything that will screw things up, fix-it will tell you. If anything in any of the steps does not agree with what you see on the screen, don't continue and get back to us and let us know what the discrepancy is. There are several reasons why you might not be getting to the desk top you are used to and rather than a bunch of mumbo jumbo and jargon, we'll start with the simplest reason first. From what I gather at this point, you have multiple issues that are not necessarily "Computer Problems". To best help you get on track using a forum like this, I suggest we take one issue at a time. There are several ways to skin a cat so I am going to use what I know will get you to where you want to be. Of course, if you know a faster way that works for you, no problem, as long as we both get to where we want to be. We don't know what you know so if we describe a step that you well know, it is not to insult your intelligence or belittle you, it's just to get you where you need to be in a step by step manner. 1....The folder that YOU created named "desk top", rename it to "My Icons" and do so without the start and end quotes. The folder you created, from what you indicated here, has a space between the words "desk" and "top". That's the one you want to rename. 2....Click on the START button at the bottom left of you computer screen. Look for "My Computer" and click on that. 3....RIGHT click Local Drive (C:) In the left column at the top, you should see "Desktop" with no space between desk and top. Looking down a little further, you should see C: with a plus next to it. Click on that plus. When it expands, look down the list and you should see the renamed directory "My Icons" that you did previously. Click on that and in the right column, everything you moved should be listed there. 4....At the top of this window click on EDIT and when the menu drops down, click on SELECT ALL. Everything in the right column should become highlighted, usually in blue. 5....Take your mouse pointer over to the highlighted column click down on the LEFT mouse button and HOLD IT DOWN. While holding it down, drag everything over to the left column and up to the "DESKTOP", at the top of the left column. You will see the DESKTOP change color when you are on it and at that point, let up on the mouse button. Make sure you are on the DESKTOP name and that it highlights because if you don't, you may move everything into another directory, compounding the issue!!! Everything should now be back the way it was before you moved your desk top. If everything is back to what you are used to, we'll take the next step. My particular next step is going to ask for a list of everything in the task manager under the tab "PROCESSES". Do a "Ctrl" "Alt" "Delete". When the task manager pops up, click on the "Processes" tab. After you enter this tab, hover your pointer over the words "User Name". This will be the name of one of the columns. You have to hover over the actual words. Left click that and you will see everything organize itself. If you could then get us a list as it appears on your screen, we can work on the next steps. I have to go on an errand so it might be some time before I get back to you, I live in a rural area. Someone else here may pick up where I left off, I have no problem with that. Then do this.

Double click the hijackthis Iconon the Desktop, Scroll down to Open the Misc Tools section" Click it at the bottom under System tools click "Open Uninstall Manager" over to the right click "Save List" Save it to your Desktop so you may find it, copy and paste it in your next reply..

Right click Mycomputer Icon on the desktop or in the start menu now choose properties, tell me how much ram(Memory) is reported and processor information too...

Close My Computer, now double click it, hold mouse over local disk a window will pop up--please provide that information as well.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

I will go ahead and do this, but I need to leave the house for about an hour and a half. I don't want you to have to sit here waiting for me without knowing that. Also, the last scan took over an hour. I appreciate your help and patience. I will run the scan while I am gone.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your Desktop from link below:

Note: Vista users must use Run As Administrator
Under Main: Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click theEmpty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords click No at the prompt
If you use Opera browser click Operaat the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords clickat the prompt
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
This tool may cause the computer toboot slower dont worry it will return to normal after a few reboots.

ok i see you up dated Adobe so, get rid of this like you did before you don't have to do it now.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

Just do a system scan only like you did before and check this entry click fixed check, reboot..

There are other hp items i will not remove, other then that looks better.

Norton is really big you can see all the 023 entries and see how many services Norton/Symantec run, So you may consider getting rid of Norton an installing a free Anti Virus program that is just as good, you would also need to install a firewall if you decided to do that, that's
totally up to you though if you are happy with norton an the computer is running better then keep it. Norton requires a special removal procedure so don't do it yourself.

How is Java going.

Ok. I've done everything listed. That includes removing the 04-HKLM for Adobe you just posted about.

Java is installed.

The only other thing I have a question on is my passwords. I keep having to log in here, even tho I have it checked to remember it. When I did the cleaner, you said to uncheck the clear passwords when prompted. I didn't see the prompt. Can I go back and try that again?

iexplore.exe is using the most virtual memory at approx. 422,312K. Since we have started fixing the above problems, I haven't had that window pop up.

What version of IE do you use? Looks like 6 yeah it is 6 you may also consider upgrading that to IE7 at some point IE6 is really getting old an dated.

When I ran it again, the prompt to save passwords still didn't come up.

The computer is running much faster now.

Thank you sooooooo much for your help and patience. You lead me thru the steps just the way I needed it. (I drive by land marks, too!) I did try to google some of the list, but all it did was confuse me more and make me cross eyed. I am a very visual person for learning and doing. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I thought I had upgraded to IE7 at one point. Yahoo wants me to upgrade to IE8, but after reading about it here, I was reluctant to do so. I did go to windows updates last week to see if there were any I needed to do, but after scanning it said there were none. How do I get IE 7?

NO you need to start a new post call it clean my computer or something like that. First thing to do is post a hijackthis log as given in these instruction s above and we will take it from there.
