Is it possible to hang train rack on wall with pocket door?

The only spot we can fit the train rack in the masterbath is on the same wall as the pocket door. Can anyone think of hardware to use or a way to mount it that wouldn't damage the pocket door hardware? If this isn't possible, if we wanted to hang either a towel bar or hooks there, again are there limitations on what we can use to hang those things?

It depends on how the pocket door was installed.

If the wall is only 4.5 inches face-to-face you cannot use very long fasteners without hitting the door.

4.5 inches - door thickness - some margin divided(1/4 in) by 2 is all the space you have.

With a 1.25 inch door this leaves only ~1.5 inches, and 0.5 in. of that is in the drywall (no real strength).

You might be able to get a correctly sized molly bolt to work.

Do you want to hang it as high as the pocket door track? There really isn't any door hardware you could damage under that area.

I hung a wall cabinet within my pocket door 'pocket' using the highest weight limit drywall anchors I could find. I made sure I used fasteners that weren't too long and I had the door in the closed position so I wouldn't screw into the door. I then held my breath as I opened the door--- success! Nothing stopped or scraped the door.

As for weight, a train rack full of towels probably doesn't weigh as much as my make-up cabinet! I -did- have a stud on the left to drive an extra screw into. If you position your rack so there is 1 fastener in a stud, you should be fine.

I have done several of thest type installs. The thing to consider is if you have at least an equal amount of wall space to open the door enough to clear the jamb opening. So if you have a 2'8" door you will need at least that much wall space to slide the door for a full opening. they can be great conversation pieces and can be used as pieces of art as well depending on the door design, if any. We have a couple of these in our bathrooms replacing the hinged doors that took up space when open. One of the slab doors I cut out a part of and framed in a wire glass piece we found in an antique shop. Have taken it with us to three different houses we have lived in. Replaced it with a simple slab door from the local lumer supplier when we left. They work great and are easy to install. Just purchase a pocket door track , or barn door track if you like, and rollers, frame it in and you are in business. Good luck.

Well, I opened the wall Friday and I found two heating ducts in the way in one wall and two supply pipes and a waste pipe in the other, so the usual pocket door is dead. Guess what else I found, two splices of 15 amp lines, and not the first time I've found shortcuts and outright code violations in this house. I won't say who built this house but it rhymes with A$$hole Bros. Matt, the doors I want to hang weight 100 lb. Do you think that on the wall track who gave me a link to is robust for long term track stability? The instructions claim good for 150 lb but I'm paranoid. Perhaps to be totally safe, should I construct a new frame from whense to hang the track in the usual fashion. Or am I just being an old woman. Don't want to open up the wall in 10 years to fix a sagging track. Brick, I'm a little confused. By 1X lumber, do you mean frame the wall next to the door with 1X2s and then attach 3/8 plywood to it, finally cover with 3/8" drywall? Or would the plywood go first and then the 1X2s to attach the drywall? Thanks!

I'm confused. Of the 12'7" room width, how much will be wall and how much will be opening? If it's 100% open, then barn doors don't make sense in my mind, because they don't close the whole gap and thus don't "hide the mess." Plus a 5 foot door would be huge. I suppose you could do a shoji screen type deal, with 4 3' screens that all collapsed into 3' on one end. But then again, I may be misunderstanding your layout plans here.

"I went to work in an office that had a pocket door that never worked right because someone had driven nails into it at some point and it was never the same after" (palimpsest) Yes. This happened to us when DH nailed the baseboard on the wall between the laundry and kitchen. The door came off track. When we renovate I will replace or remove. However, this was builder grade. On our extension I added three pocket doors. The one I had put in for the powder room is a solid core door, not thinner than most doors, as I wanted as much sound-dampening as possible with such a device. We used Johnson Hardware - not the home depot variety which runs $ 40 or so, but commercial grade. Look at the Johnson site under 1500 Commercial Grade and you will also find non-standard size frames (door max thickness 1 3/4"). Use a good carpenter.

Wanted to say thanks. The train rack is now up. My husband was able to fasten one of the screws into the stud. He also measured how much space he had for the fasteners and bought them to the hardware store to be cut down. I think he had something like 3/4 inch. So between that and getting drywall anchors and finding the stud - we now have the train rack up on the same wall as the pocket doors. In hindsight, we probably could have had the wall made with thicker studs so we would have had more space - but it worked out in the end anyway. Thanks again for the advice - it helped us be prepared for the trip to the hardware store and gave us a plan of action.
