I'm not an expert on this subject but I believe that you cannot replace one unit of a double oven combo. That's why many people buy 2 single ovens and install them with one on top of the other.

Reprising this thread, because I have the same question. I have a 30-inch Miele double wall oven (Masterchef self-cleaning) that I really like. However, I managed to break/crack the outer glass on the bottom oven door, and have been searching for a replacement. The best quote I have found so far for just the replacement door glass portion is $750, from Miele, via my trusted local appliance repair guy. He routinely services Miele, and said that even though he is used to Miele's high prices for replacement parts, this quote just about gave him "a heart attack."

I have looked on-line and on eBay, and have also been having some conversations with a retired Miele repair person whom I met through eBay (very helpful!). I have thought about trying to have a local glass place replace the tempered door glass itself -- but that would assume that my local repair guy can remove and then re-install the door assembly, and that the local glass place can replace the glass (and with appropriate glass that will resist the self-cleaning cycle), and that the total cost of doing so would save significantly on the $750-plus-installation already quoted by official Miele folks.

So, I was thinking of "making virtue of necessity" and replacing this bottom oven with a Wolf combi-steam unit. (Should fit into the space without significant problems, because the Wolf combi-steam's dimensions are enough smaller than the dimensions of half of the Miele 30-inch double oven.) But is that possible? Looks like maybe not... But a girl can always hope, right?

(ETA: I do hate the thought of just giving up on these ovens, but I also am irate at the thought of being gouged by Miele! For what it's worth, the ovens are 13 years old, and do suffer from some problems with heating consistency, although I am able to work around that pretty well. Also, the roast probes melted, early on, due to poor design, and I never replaced them.)

Ask you trusted appliance repair guy his thoughts. I am not familiar with that model, but it is possible that the two separate ovens are bolted to a metal frame at the factory, and are wired together, so while it may be technically possible to cut out the bottom oven and remove it, there will likely be significant wiring and mods required to put in another unit. If you have a source for a decent woodworker, and there is enough space, he may be able to rework the existing cabinet so you can fit your Wolf Combi Steam unit, and a different model oven above that.

Thank you very much for this response, barryv. That is pretty much what I am thinking may be the case, but I thought I would ask. Of course, for the Miele ovens, there is a single control panel for both ovens. I wouldn't mind having the single control panel remaining, even if part of it went to what you might call a "phantom limb" (that is, if part of the remaining control panel went to a now-removed bottom oven).

It would be cheaper to purchase a single oven Miele. I doubt you can disconnect a double oven to make it a single oven. If you are okay with a used model, look on eBay or visit local showrooms to see if floor models are available.

Thanks, homepro! The thing is, though, that I really do use the two ovens all the time. I am a serious baker. I would plan to continue to use the remaining (top) oven, if my scheme to replace just the bottom oven worked, and would use a [new] combi-steam oven as both a steam oven and as a "regular" (baking/convection/roasting) oven.

Any thoughts on my other idea, which is this: Purchase a replacement door for a 27" Miele oven (available on eBay for only $95 -- a steal!) and then use a trim kit to fill out the door to 30". Would that work? It would be a cosmetic change, but is it possible, and would the door function properly?

Your idea will not work. I have a Miele 27” single oven and the door is not something you can trim with another piece to make larger. Have you called Miele yourself to get pricing on the part and order it? Miele sells parts directly to customers.

Steam ovens are usually not allowed for under counter installations which is where you would be putting it in your configuration. Check the installation guide for the model you are interested in.

There are quite a few used double oven Miele units on eBay for about $1000. Maybe one of those will work for you? Another option is the Bosch ovens which have gotten really good reviews on the forum.

Of course, one significant consideration in purchasing an eBay replacement for my double ovens is that both ovens work perfectly well right now -- although with minor issues of temperature uneven-ness -- so that if I were to replace them with an eBay purchase, I could conceivably be DOWN-grading in quality: I might be losing space (new ovens less than 30 inches?) and/or possibly losing features (older model with less useful life left? and/or model with fewer features than my current ovens provide?). All that I really NEED is one new outer door for the lower oven. (Which, given that I could conceivably replace the entire unit, both ovens, for about $250 more than it would cost me to replace just the door, makes me very annoyed at Miele's replacement-unit pricing!) So, even a bargain eBay purchase of a Miele double-oven replacement doesn't make the best sense in this situation. Thus, my notion of perhaps "making virtue of necessity" and switching to a new type of oven (the combi-steam oven). (And if the eBay purchase were of a smaller-sized unit, then there would be a cost to re-fit the cabinetry, of course.)

Just wanted to add that years ago I had a part on a range that needed to be replaced, and with labor factored in, it was 50% of the cost of the unit. I bit the bullet and paid the 50%, but not that many years later, I replaced the whole thing. While you are right that right now the only thing wrong is the outer door, once you replace that, you still have a how many year old unit, and another piece may fail in the future. If it were me, I would see if I could rework the cabinetry so you can get two separate units, it makes replacement in the future much easier.

barryv -- That is excellent advice! In fact, if I do replace the unit, I will definitely do so with two separate units, no matter what. And I certainly take your point about paying repair/replacement costs now, only to (possibly) have more on the appliance fail not-too-far into the future.

Interestingly, this morning (1/2/18) I called Miele Customer Service and was a bit taken aback when the representative with whom I spoke said she would "look [me] up" in their "system," and, upon finding my purchase information (from 2003), informed me that "this is about the time" when Miele expects parts to begin to fail. (!!!) I am disinclined to throw out any item, let alone two huge ovens -- one of which is behaving well, and one of which currently needs only an outer door. It seems so wasteful! I prefer to repair rather than to replace. But the era when major appliances lasted 30 years or more is gone, alas! My husband has been skeptical about the noises I've been making regarding possibly replacing the ovens with new, but tonight when I described my conversation with Miele Customer Service, he was astounded to be reminded that our ovens are "THAT OLD?!?!!" Now he, too, is thinking that (especially given the complicated electronics involved in modern appliances) we may have to wonder if the ovens are nearing the end of their useful lives. (Again, I find the idea of replacing a 13-14-year old oven to be rather... shocking. We purchased in 2003 and installed in mid-2004, so the ovens have been in service only 13-and-a-half years.)
