Thanks, Jean, that is a lake in the background, i've been living here for over 35 years, there have never been homes on the other side and it is very peaceful. There is a dam at the far end of the lake, so we never have any flooding, as they will open up the dam if the lake level gets high. I live about 2 hours south of Cleveland, in Ohio and we did get very cold!!! close to the freezing mark at night. it is supposed to warm up starting tomorrow and be back in the low 70s by the weekend. Kay, I do hope all goes well with your DH. I had a better bloom on Fashion Police towards evening, and I will admit that I helped it open just a bit!!! It also looks a bit pinker on my monitor, and it was somewhat pinkish in the garden too.

Reprising this thread, because I have the same question. I have a 30-inch Miele double wall oven (Masterchef self-cleaning) that I really like. However, I managed to break/crack the outer glass on the bottom oven door, and have been searching for a replacement. The best quote I have found so far for just the replacement door glass portion is $750, from Miele, via my trusted local appliance repair guy. He routinely services Miele, and said that even though he is used to Miele's high prices for replacement parts, this quote just about gave him "a heart attack." I have looked on-line and on eBay, and have also been having some conversations with a retired Miele repair person whom I met through eBay (very helpful!). I have thought about trying to have a local glass place replace the tempered door glass itself -- but that would assume that my local repair guy can remove and then re-install the door assembly, and that the local glass place can replace the glass (and with appropriate glass that will resist the self-cleaning cycle), and that the total cost of doing so would save significantly on the $750-plus-installation already quoted by official Miele folks. So, I was thinking of "making virtue of necessity" and replacing this bottom oven with a Wolf combi-steam unit. (Should fit into the space without significant problems, because the Wolf combi-steam's dimensions are enough smaller than the dimensions of half of the Miele 30-inch double oven.) But is that possible? Looks like maybe not... But a girl can always hope, right? Thanks for any advice you can give! (ETA: I do hate the thought of just giving up on these ovens, but I also am irate at the thought of being gouged by Miele! For what it's worth, the ovens are 13 years old, and do suffer from some problems with heating consistency, although I am able to work around that pretty well. Also, the roast probes melted, early on, due to poor design, and I never replaced them.)

You're laughing but people do put a pair of ranges side by side rather than getting a 60" range, for instance. Because 30" ranges are mass produced, two cost significantly less. Look around some more. You do not need either a speed oven or a steam oven. They're nice. I have one of each. But you don't need it. The issue is your desire for a compact double oven unit. How small is your kitchen that saving a few inches would really help? Is it the oven height issue, really? Or the not wanting to give over space. Usually when you stack separate units, like a combi-steam oven over a full sized oven, by the time you've put in the necessary cabinetry and supports, you're not really saving much vertical space. A single unit double oven saves space because there's only one control panel. There are a number of combo units with a convection-microwave or speed oven and a regular oven, many of them at accessible prices. GE and Bosch are both in the mid-range. I don't know what your budget is, but I wouldn't want one of the lower end ones. Remember, when it fails, you lose both ovens if they're a single unit. If the issue is really the height of the ovens, consider put two side by side, or even one here and one there. If the issue is that you really don't need the second oven, or not very often, consider whether a portable oven would suffice for the extra duty. Breville countertop ovens are very well regarded and many people like them better than their low end wall ovens. Nesco roasters come in many sizes and can do many of the things that an oven can. There are also catering grade freestanding convection ovens. If your kitchen is too small to pull one out for the holidays, for instance, you can use a portable on any heat proof surface that isn't being used while company is there, such as the top of the dryer, or a desk. There are all kinds of ways of solving the problem, but first, define what your function needs are.

While going from cooktop to oven isn't unheard of, it's not a common enough even that I would fret about it. We're with you on ovens. In fact, we're putting in the Bosch swinging door ovens because my wife is short and she has a hard time reaching over a normal oven door. As for single-vs-double. I had a 48" Thermador range two houses ago. I rarely used the second (smaller) oven. However, I moved into a townhouse with double ge ovens (and a ge gas cooktop) and boy I got used to that in a hurry. Yeah, I had to carry a pan to the oven to finish under the broiler or bring the pan of drippings back to the stovetop to make the gravy, but the few extra steps weren't going to kill me. So what we ended up with is the Bosch 688 cooktop and double Bosch ovens.
