Should I do one double wall oven or two single wall ovens?

I'm concerned if the double wall oven were to break we would be without an oven while the oven is under repair. I'm not quite sure what the trade-offs are going with two single wall ovens, besides cost.

The disadvantage of two singles is cost and space.

The advantage is you can install both at an ideal height instead of installing both at a compromise height.

If you buy two singles and stack them then the only advantage is redundant controls so if one breaks the other still works. You only have to replace or repair one.

I grew up in a kitchen with two totally different wall ovens. One had a great broiler and rotisserie, and opened to the side. The other was fantastic for baking, especially things that needed a consistent and gentle environment. It was also good for gigantabirds. Both could handle most ordinary tasks. For instance, cookie baking marathons, or multiple chickens. Both were at optimal height. The side opening one could take advantage of what would have otherwise been a dump area by a doorway. The drop down door was by a wall where the other couldn't have fit.

The design of my non-attached ovens (Gaggenau combi-steam and single) are so heavily weighted to stacking that they would have looked dumb if they hadn't been. Giving up separate optimal height ovens for that is one of the decisions I question constantly. It solved some other problems, but I still rue it.

If you have the money and space for two single ovens, do it! And remember, if they're independent ovens they also don't have to be next to each other if the design works better to separate them.

An update. We purchased a Fisher and Paykel double oven for $2600 delivered from an authorized dealer over Ebay of all places. I checked the wiring to our old oven and I was amazed to discover that although it was a 30 amp breaker they had used 8 gauge wire. I installed a 40 amp breaker and we were good to go. As mentioned in this thread, when you have the option of two dishes that require different temps. and oven modes to prepare you use what you have. Our menus have expanded since we installed the double oven. We purchased a countertop microwave in stainless to match the ovens. So far the biggest difference is that the FP oven is far superior compared to the Jennair that we had. I never thought that an oven would make such a difference. The same recipes taste so much better. Even a simple dish like roasted new potatoes with rosemary have a creamier texture while still remaining crisp. Based on my experience I would not hesitate recommending a double oven if you can accommodate them n your kitchen. Thanks for the advice offered....

I have a 36" range top with a Wolf single oven, Advantium 240 above. I use the Advantium for almost everything I bake/roast, except for larger things like turkeys and roasts.

Not sure if I'm too late to the party here or if you are still deciding. When we renovated our house 12 years agoe we went with a 36" bluestar range with gas oven and a GE Monogram 30" electric wall oven with GE Advantium Microwave/speed cook/convection above it. I've been super happy with the decision. I cook all the time on the range top and mostly use the wall oven however love having the big gas oven, which fits 2 turkeys for Thanksgiving and roasts them beautifully. Unfortunately our GE Monogram just went kaput so I'm now shopping for a new 30" electric wall oven. Will most likely go with the GE Monogram again but wish I could find one that has knobs and looks a bit less slick. If you've already picked would love to know what you went with and if you are happy with the choices.

We did option 1 and I don't regret it at all. We have a small countertop microwave that is in a regular upper cabinet with a smaller door - picture below which is much easier than explaining! (Just avert your eyes from any unfinished trim bits you see!) This is the first time I've ever had double ovens and I am still surprised at how often I use them - it's so much easier to plan meals that have two different oven temp needs. It feels positively luxurious to be able to have several different things going in the oven at once! Also--before we renovated, our kitchen had a fancy Kitchenaid combination convection microwave/oven like in your option 4. We had so much trouble out of that thing. The microwave had to be repaired a couple times, and the oven electrics would freak out and stop working every single holiday we hosted! We kept them both limping along, but since they were attached, we would have had to replace both appliances if one of them totally broke.

Depends on your kitchen layout. I like the idea of having two sizes, or perhaps one steam. Maybe a microwave/oven combo for one if the layout requires it.

(I currently have a large range oven and a wee little 24" wall oven. I have enjoyed having the two sizes.)
