A vote for NO beadboard. Originally, bb was an early 1900s kind of thing - there's nothing remotely midcentury about it. Now its totally overused and usually in the form of DIY paneling from the big box store. Not that I think we have to be historical purists - just have all the design components relate well and complement each other. In my mind the country-ish flavor of bb doesn't relate well to the more suburban sophisticated style of your tile floor and of the typical 60s ranch house. Unless you've already reworked the rest of the house to be more traditionally styled and beadboard friendly - in that case just pls disregard! Agree that the sprayed on epoxy finish (in any color) can be a good affordable alternative to ripping out the tile and re-installing some other kind of wall. The tub will probably peel so maybe you could just replace that - the money and effort you save not ripping out the tile wall (believe me that is a beast of a job) can go to the cost of replacing the tub.

Thank you, fnmroberts. Lovely bathroom! I love the white vanity, though I don't plan to paint or replace mine in the near future. I don't have the bathroom dimensions handy (I'm away from home at the moment) but both are very similar in size to your own, though the vanity size in the guest bath is 37" and the vanity in the master bath is 43". I'm hoping to get both bathrooms done for about $2,000 if possible. I've been looking at the granite vanity tops with built-in undermount sinks at Home Depot and Lowes for the $200 to $350 range. I'd need to add tile for the flooring (though it shouldn't take a lot, since the bathrooms are smallish), faucets, pulls and paint. I have no idea how much to estimate labor costs but my assumption is that's always the most expensive part so I'm going to see if any friends have tiling experience or have put in a new bath vanity so I could do more of it DIY with a little free help. Mostly what I'm looking for now are some inspiration photos of bathrooms that have similar natural/honey builder grade vanity cabinets just to see what style of counters and fixtures were added, what type of mirror and flooring, etc. Thanks again for any photos people can provide.

As far as style goes, I like the idea of things that are reminiscent of the original style but still updated. You don't have to keep things "period appropriate" if that's not what you like, but design often works better when you keep the original in mind. I think that your ideas are fine but could be a little more unique, have a little more interest to them. What do you like about the original design, or about 70's-esque design in general? Or what do you hate? I really like how this bathroom reads as retro but not outdated. The little vintage accents - especially that owl - add a cool touch, too. I don't really like the idea of a gray floor tile in this bathroom, unless you're wanting to go a lot more modern with it all. What about something like this if you wanted to reference back to the blue? Or go with 70's inspired neutrals, more brown/gold than gray. Good luck!

Thanks for talking to me about it everybody. I canceled two meetings with design-build places but am keeping one meeting with the one I am most interested in. Don't want to waste people's time. I am also researching costs and maybe labor is much more expensive than I am guessing. I have a spreadsheet and have been plugging in what I think are decent costs, and am coming up to about $20k, with $6-8k for labor but those are guesses. I will have to get some estimates to see what real reality looks like. I know that people re-do bathrooms for not much money. If you look at people who flip houses and who rehab rental properties, they are not doing $30k+ bathrooms, but they are getting inexpensive materials and inexpensive labor. North Texan did your fixture prices include install or something? Let's say I want to put in a Delta Dryden faucet, roughly $300, and a Kohler Purist shower + valve, say $500, all chrome. I only have one sink and one showerhead. That leaves me $200 for a towel ring, towel bars and TP holder to keep it at $1,000. These are quotes from online sources: We'll call this Delta Dryden widespread chrome faucet $260. Here is a Kohler Devonshire shower kit (at $100) this seems really cheap!) and valve. $80. So figure $200 for the shower!! Round up to $500 for a basic sink faucet and shower trim + valve and that's Delta and Kohler. Of course I need to pay a plumber to install them. Maybe some caulk, etc. But those are very decent prices. Am I missing something? I know I'll add more if I add on something like a hand shower with its own valve and whatnot, but I functionally only really need a shower, and a sink faucet.
