Should I Install Windows Vista Upgrade?

Hi, I just received the latest Windows Vista Home Premium upgrade in the mail for an HP Slimeline computer that I purchased new in December, 06. The computer now has Windows XP in it. This will change the operating system from Windows XP to the newer Windows Vista. Should I install this upgrade or stay with the Windows XP? Is there any problems that I will have if I do install the upgrade?

There have been issues on other forums with laptops and gaming. If you game, make sure that the games are Vista compatible. You also should insure, that your computer has a minimum of 1G memory and should probably consider 2G. Vista is very memory intensive

About Vista upgrade.....Don't do it! Wait a number of months more. Keep reading and checking in. Wait until you get some indication that Vista has stabilized. Many, many problems and incompatibilities being reported at this early date.

Assuming your XP is working OK, stay there!

check the link for info on that ATI Catalyst. ati2evxx.exe is the ATI External Event Utility for your ATI display drivers. It manages the ATI Hotkey feature. It seems it is really up to the individual user if they want to leave this running on their pc or not. IF it is using a lot of cpu resources and causing problems it can be turned off/disabled. It is mostly for use if you have 2 monitors in use on the one pc, it controls the hotkeys used to switch monitors and other ATI hotkeys. so I would go ahead and let it update since you do have ATI components on your pc, it is likely a real ATI process. You should see it in your task manager if you hit control alt and delete together then look at the list of processes you should see it listed there and you can also look and see how much resources it is using. What our research found: Pyrolitic or Hard-Coat Low-E coating are designed to reduce heat loss and to increase solar gain. This is great for areas needing a lot of winter warming and not a lot of summer heat. The SHGC is normally higher for this type. We were told that this is the older Low-E coating. Sputtered or Soft-Coat Low-E are designed to reduce heat loss and let in some solar heat, not as much as pyrolitic. This is OK for areas where there are both heating needs and cooling needs. Still good for cold winter area and mild summer area. This is Low-E II. Spectrally Selective Sputtered coating Low-E are designed to reduce heat loss in winter and also reduce heat gain in summer. THis is for area where we have cold winter and real hot summer. Another version of Low-E II. In Texas, I would definitely go with Low-E II, it is a no brainer. We live in CA where it gets downright cold, blasting rain and some snow and then searing hot summer. Low-E would have been insufficient so we have Low-E II. The difference in temperature, depending on insulation in the house wall, can be dramatic. We often are a cool 70-F inside while it is 105-F outside.

I used vista for a long time when everybody else was using win7.. it was fine then - just used an extra bunch of memory which isn't a real bad thing. February 2012, vista lost Microsoft regular support & only gets security updates but that may quit too when it reaches 10 yrs old so early 2017 it will be spoken of like XP security is now. I don't remember exacts, but several things security wise just don't work anymore as it is now on vista - think IE highest version in vista has reached the end of usable use now. If he uses IE, he's pretty much required to change to another browser, probably chrome with its built in Flash or he wont be doing much banking or emailing from it. My sister just hit that wall with her banking and emails. Vista has been around since 2007 but was some hated or spoken poorly of it too much and it wasn't even 2 full years until win7 replaced it.

I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate a few weeks ago. On the pro side, Vista loads and shuts down faster then XP Pro. It seems to work better with most of my applications. It definitely works better with Office 2007, which was slow with XP. I have not had any operational problems. I did have a problem with the Firewall of Microsoft's Live OneCare, but found the solution in a Web search.

The only cons of Vista was a lack of support for my five year old lexmark printer. Lexmark has informed me that they will not provide Vista drivers for a "legacy" printer. No more Lexmark printers for me!!!!!
I just purchased a Canon printer on eBay. Vista is supported and the Canon has better features and cheaper ink.

I work in the computer field and will have to deal with Vista, so I had some incentitive to upgrade. So far, I've had many more problems with XP Service Pack 2.
