Can I replace Vista with Windows XP? Search Engines still dead

My friend tried uninstalling the updates that seemed to make her Compaq computer stop reading search engines.

She did a System Restore. She still can not use any Search Engine on her computer.

Can she remove the Vista and install Windows XP?

If not, would upgrading to Windows 7 work, or is that an entirely new nightmare?

I'm not sure what "stop reading search engines" means. What happens if she tries to go to www.gogle.com or search.yahoo.com? Nothing? Are other web sites working? Ordinarily if certain web sites are being blocked I'd suspect some form of malware. If she has any antivirus or antimalware software I'd suggest she run both in safe mode and see what they turn up.

PM2 - I just want to clarify that the reason my husband may not be able to get XP drivers for his laptop is not because Microsoft is not supporting XP. They continue to support XP and constantly issue new updates. The issue is that there might not be XP drivers that are compatible with other things in his laptop. Now I don't know enough to know what those things are - is it hardware on the laptop, other software they've installed that doesn't have XP drivers. I don't fully comprehend the problem, but it's not that Microsoft isn't supporting XP. I hope somebody more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want to give prairiemoon2 incorrect information. I share your frustration that Microsoft would issue software that is so problematic that they even write documentation on ways to deal with the problems. I'm also frustrated when I have to get software fixes from other companies to deal with Microsoft problems. (I just had lots of trouble updating XP on an old computer of my daughters. The updates would not install - and nothing on Microsoft site - or from my computer tech guy's discussions with Microsoft turned up a solution. The solution came from third-party software - recommended to me here on this forum.) Lynn.

More memory is good but at some point there is a diminishing return on the investment and that point is a function of what you are doing with your computer. Things like first person shooter games, video editing, photo editing (of very large files) all benefit from lots of memory. Writing an email to Aunt Betty doesn't require very much memory at all because the computer can process information far faster than you can type. Same thing for the Internet, your computer can render pages faster than your connection can supply the information. So if you have a slow internet connection, you're not likely to experience much, if any improvement. With that said, 4 gigs is probably a pretty good number. If you really want a WOW factor, get a solid state drive and use that for your O/S and critical applications. To try and answer some of your questions: - Windows doesn't care about the physical drive or any logical partitions. It does make good sense to install Windows 7 on the newer, faster drive. You'll get the best performance that way. When it comes time to get rid of XP, everything will be on one drive and that, if nothing else, should help you keep things mentally organized. - My understanding is that you have two physical drives, one with a functioning version of XP and the other blank. If that is not correct, say so NOW. - When you go to install Windows 7, it will recognize that there is another operating system (Windows XP) already installed. Windows 7 won't do anything to XP other than to set up the dual boot. Essentially it's computer language that says, "XP is there, Windows 7 is here, which one do you want to use?" - Logical partitions to a drive a largely a function of personal preference. Understand that it is more difficult (but not impossible) to non-destructively repartition a drive after you put data on it. If you, for example, have a partition for music, another for videos, and a third for pictures and find down the road that you have a lot more videos than music, it becomes more difficult to rearrange things. My suggestion is a single, large partition and use folders to organize your data.

Support has been, or will be dropped for all versions of XP except for service pack 3. However, XP remains my favorite windows version. My wife moved to Vista on her laptop and hated it. She now has Windows 7 and says it is an improvement over Vista. Some day, I plan to move to Windows 7 and skip Vista. This requires a complete clean out of the system - reformat of the disk. I dread that move, and expect some applications and hardware will no longer be compatible. If certain applications become incompatible, I'll resist the move as long as I can. These would be applications that are too expensive for me as a retiree to replace. I have an old finite element analysis program that is no longer compatible. To buy a new version is $16,000 the last time I priced it, so that will not be done unless I land a consulting job that needs it and can pay for it - not likely in my remaining life. If you are having difficulty in finding your pictures, use the "Find" command to search your hard drive. If your disk has been subdivided into logical drives, you may have to search each logical drive. The find comamnd does not need the entire name of the file to find it, just part of the name will do. It will, of course, list all files matching the same fragment. For example, if you searched for all occurences of *.jpg, you'll get every file having extension " jpg", not necessarily an efficent thing to do. Suppose you have the followiong files: 1998 Joey 1.tif 1998 Joey 2.jpg 2000 Joey 1.doc You could locate all these files by searching on "joey" and very likely would not get many extraenous hits. File names that contined the string, joey, would also appear such as jumpjoey.tif . Recommendation: In the future, create folders with meaningful names in which to store your images. That way, you'll know where they are. Folder names such as: Vacation Jun 2000 Year 2001 pic Year 2002 pic 110Canon 111Canon are examples. Tip: Its a good idea when you set up a new computer to set aside a data drive for documnets and images. If you have one hard drive, a logical drive could be created on it. You would have 2 logical drives: one for the system files and the other for your personal files. I have 2 physical hard drives in my computer which becomes a natural thing to do. This separates your data from the system and application disk, and makes for more efficient use fo the "Find" command. On first pass, you need to search only the data drive, and if not found there, search the other drives. System and application files are humungous these days and requires much needless search time.

you can disconnect an old machine from the web .... and not worry about security issues ... so use your old machine... disconnected ... with all its old programs ... and peripherals .... and just get a new machine .... for WWW work .... you would probably be amazed what you can get ... machine.. and memory-wise.. for a half or a quarter of what you invested in the old machine .... it really is mind bending ... then.. all you have to figure out.. is how to get info from one to the other ... and a memory stick.. or some such... will usually get around that ... you guys seem to be trapped in the one machine for everything issue ... if i liked to tour the woods in a 4 wheel truck .. i would have an old beat up one for two tracking and ditch driving... and a nicer newer one.. for the roads ... and work ... personally ... for the cost of W10 ... and the hours it will take an old 7 person to install and learn it... [not to mention the mind bending stress .. lol] ..... for about 300 bucks.. you can have a new machine and be enjoying both... inside a half day ... when its all said and done.. i would probably wait until 10 came out ... if you can wait that long ... right now.. an investment of a stand alone memory.. and full backup for the old machine on that.. MIGHT save you ... from future disaster.. if you rely on an unsupported .. wired to the WWW ... operating system ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: and you could get it for about half... if you coule figure out how to share the old moniter ....

Have your friend post a hijackthis log also. The default search engines are listed in the ro enrties. I'd like to see it.

That sounds more like a virus to me than anything related to updates. I recently had a nasty one that would send me to totally unrelated sites whenever I clicked on a hit in any search engine. It took a bit of work to remove it.

Replacing Vista with XP is not a reasonable or advisable solution...and is probably beyond the computer skills of your friend. It sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

If the computer is to be wiped then use the Compaq CDs and return to factory defaults. Why waste money on an operating system that is 2 generations old?

I have to agree I sure would not go that route just because she is unable to access search engines. That would be an extreme measure. It would be a better choice to move to Windows 7 if she really was going to do something that drastic. Since she has Vista a move to 7 would be a normal progression. But I would definitely try to find out what was causing the problem before doing that.

Get a HJT log for Zep and lets see what is happening with that computer. She may somehow have got all of them blocked in a host file or they may be blocked in her browsers blocked list. Those are the first 2 places I would look

has she installed other browsers and tried to see if she can access them with those new browsers, I would tell her to try firefox and opera both.

Thanks, folks, I'll pass these suggestions on to her. She lives more than 100 miles from the nearest "computer shop" and is trying to fix the problem with her nephew's help. It has them both stumped.

Yes, ever since she installed Microsoft.NET framework 2.0, service pack 2 security update for Windows Vista Service pack she can no longer search for anything (using any search engineÂGoogle, Yahoo, Mozilla).

An index page will come up but none of the links/sites will open. She canÂt X-out of that screen.

She has to hit Alt/ctl/delete and restart task manager; the whole system closes down and she has to log back on.

She can open her bookmarks, but canÂt go anywhere from them.

She has a Compaq Presario computer. Windows Vista home basic.

She has run McAfeeÂs virtual technician and security scans. They said everything was fine. It isnÂt.

She has shut down and restarted her computer several times. Nothing seems to work.

Boot the computer to SAFE MODE W/NETWORKING. See what happens from there.

Think I might use something like CCleaner to delete the index.dat & also clear history, cookies, forms, etc,,,, all of it in the IE & Mozilla browser clear cache locations & untick the 'preserve websites.
