computer wont power up

Dell Demention 4400 wont power up. No lights, no fans, no nothing.

I have an optiplex 270 that's operational with similar power supply.

Question: Any danger in moving good psu to inoperable comp. temporarly to eliminate psu?

If you're sure same voltages, do it ! Unless the good one is really tiny compaired to the other.

I know I hate to ask but it is the first question any tech support asks and this just happened to someone I know on another forum, he purchased and installed a new power supply o n his pc only to realize that the power cord had some how come partly unplugged from the electrical source, so are you sure it is well plugged in and if you have a power bar or such, eliminate it and try plugging it directly into the wall socket to make sure there is not an issue there.

if power sources specs match up should not be a problem.

Well if the mobo was replaced a month ago we should be able to eliminate Frys. Did you remove the left side panel and see if the fan over the CPU heatsink was spinning? If you are comfortable inside the case then remove the power cord from the back of the tower, remove the side again and look to see if the heatsink is fastened tightly to the CPU. Rest an arm on the metal case while gently trying to move the heatsink. Strangely I recently read an article about a broken heatsink retaining bracket. If the heatsink is loose this could well cause the computer not to start as the built in safety factor will kick in preventing you from burning out the CPU or processor. While you are inside take a look at the 20 or 24 pin power connector coming from the power supply to the motherboard to ensure that is seated and the retaining clip is in place. Restart with the side off to watch the fan plus see if the LED lights on the front of the case light up at all.

It would not be a power overload but a power failure. Power supplies (P/W) have at least 3 different voltages. 12 volts for the fans and hard drives. then 3.3 or thereabouts depending on the computer age and somewhere around 2 or less for the memory. Are you comfortable entering the BIOS? If so start the computer and as soon as you hear the beep tap the F11 button. Once the BIOS is opened use your arrow keys to navigate to the screen providing the power info (scroll left to each screen and you will see where to stop hopefully). Then check the voltages listed, there might be 2 sets listed, the correct one and the actual one for your machine. These are allowed to vary by 10%. You will see the instructions to exit without saving any changes so just follow along (not sure with HP myself)

I hope that this is a "Been there done that" situation - if not then it is as others have posted. I mistakenly plugged the wrong computer power supply into my Acer EeePC and left it charging for a few hours and then it did exactly what yours is doing! Fortunately the EeePC has a protection circuit that switches things off when the charger voltage is too high - mine was 19 volts but the Acer only requires 12 volts. Thankfully after connecting the right charger the Acer returned to normal working. Needless to say now all of my multitude of chargers are very prominently labelled. Colin

What is the brand and model of your genny? I researched several before I purchased mine for the same reasons you mentioned and discovered there were a few that I read on that suggested not hooking up anything sensitive to voltage or anything that was "solid state".(seems like a pretty worthless gen to me?!) Apparently some genny's put out "dirty power". The sine wave has sharp peaks and valleys vs. the normal smooth sine wave with broad peaks and valleys that you get from the power co and other gens. If you have one that puts out dirty power then I am not sure I would chance anything with it unless you talked to the manufacturer of the ups and they said that it would specifically clean that up. I bought the biggest ups that i could get from best buy. It was the geek squad brand, had plenty of power and cost about $175. I have this hooked up to all of my electronics in my entertainment center.(the amp and dvd are hooked up to the non-battery side) I think ups' are a great idea on anything sensitive no matter where the power is coming from. (they are especially useful for those brownouts you mentioned) The ups will run my Directv DVR for well over an hour.(so the programs continue to record even if the power goes out). Hope this helps. Thanks Mikie and Ravencajun, Power cable connections are good. Swapped out power supplies, it worked. Looked around in me junk and found a suitable psu. It also worked. Been powered up for 2 hrs now and all seems well. Thanks again. These Dell computers require a rather long cable harness because of the way the case hinges, like a book.

Glad you got the power supply fixed.
I have a Dell Dimension 4400 laying here on the floor split wide open like a book.
Craziest case I've ever seen, motherboard on one half and the HD and other drives on the other half.
Took me longer to figure out how to open the thing than to replace the sound card.
The box weights a ton, over 30 pounds.
