Free AVG????????

Am I EVER having a HARD time finding a site to DL a FREE AVG antivirus without problems!

They sure are making it HARD for us to get it.

Mine either says corrupt or it starts to DL and then pooh, it disappears or closes too soon etc.

Does anyone here have a good site that is reliable?

I can't find a free one at Grisoft and no luck with download.com.

I did find where you have to enter your name and e-mail address?? What was that all about as I didn't go through with it.

There you go Urlee, linked below. Yes, they certainly seem to be deliberately making it harder to find the free download. Perhaps it works and large numbers of folks are deciding to pay for it.

Thank you so much for the URL incase?

I just got done DL'ing one I found from a google site which took 1 hour and 15 minutes. (dial up)
I saved it to a file and saw it was there when I closed the DL box when it finished. (It didn't disappear)
I have yet to see if it will work unless you or someone reading this have doubts about this one?

Sapphires you might consider changing from Zonealarm in the near future because it no longer supports your Windows 98. This does not have the same urgency as changing your anti virus but should be done at some point. Comodo, linked below, is very similar to Zonealarm in that it pops up near the clock when looking for permission or denial. There are other free firewalls just as good of course. I use this on my main computer along with their anti virus. A word of caution though if you use the Comodo anti virus, for some reason Windows XP refuses to recognise it and tells me I am exposed. If history repeats itself it will begin selectively auto-upgrading in the next few days. Not all updating users will get the upgrade on-demand at the same time. Grisoft usually spreads it over a period so don't be concerned if you are not getting the upgrade with your normal updating. It might be over a couple weeks at a minmum. I for one do not see a major need to rush the upgrading at this time. I would recommend be patient. If you are familiar with FileHippo, you will see on RC's link that there isn't a Change Log tab so users don't even know what the changes are yet. They are more than likely minor fixes as the numeric change is still in the suffix. DA

I know on the tech forums there are a lot of reports of false positives with AVG lately, not saying that is the case but could be. I would go run some of the online scans and see what turns up. I have really bad vision and can not read that info on there but does it say lavasoft adaware? if so then it likely is a false positive of adaware that it is detecting. Once started, the rogue itself, like all other rogues, will scan your computer and state that there are numerous infections on it. If you attempt to use the program to remove any of these infections, though, it will state that you need to purchase the program first. In reality, though, the infections that the rogues states are on your computer are all legitimate files that if deleted could cause Windows to not operate correctly. Therefore, please do not trust anything it states are infections. You will need to remove this. The computer guy will probably reformat / return to factory settings.

I did it sucessfully!!!!! I am a happy camper now!

Wouldn't you just know it, I got knocked off on the last step while it was getting me the latest updates but I managed to get them when I got online again.
I was on pins and needles hoping I wouldn't get knocked off during the DL, whew!
One thing that happened right off the bat was, it said AVG detected I had an outdated version of Roxio CD creator that needed updating first, etc. etc. which I don't even have on my computer.

Now, I have to see if I can get Norton off my computer without it taking something I need, with it? Hope it is a program all by itself.

Nothing wrong with that download Urlee. But having spent so much time on the download I would definitely create a Utilities folder (or any name you prefer) and copy it into there in case you have need to re-install at any future point in time.

I do have it in a special saved DL folder along with my other zipped DL'd ones.

Glad to be up and running except I am having trouble getting into my e-mail and I can't get into my e-mails now using Mail Washer!

Hmm, the fact that I could not get my emails was why I gave up on AVG after using it for many years. You could try Avast, AntiVir or Comodo, all free programs. I have used all of them over time with n issues, currently I have Comodo on both the machines that are running.

Can you get the mail if you shut Mailwasher off temporarily?

Yes, I just click on the OE icon.
That is what I have been doing but how long I will put up with that, I don't know.

My fingers are still crossed---------
I couldn't believe it.
I clicked on my mailwash icon and it worked as usual with AVG this time?????? I was able to go to OE and was able to retrieve my mail as usual. I hope I didn't get my hopes up too soon with this report.
I hardly get spam to have to use it but I like "the fun of it". (smiles)
