I am putting my computer back together after having to have a new hard drive installed. My Norton is almost expired so I didn't go to the trouble of installing it. I put in the free AVG but wonder if I should upgrade to the pay one. Do most of U here use the free one?

Used AVG free version for years...install it on my own computers,
and those I work on...no problems ever.

If history repeats itself it will begin selectively auto-upgrading in the next few days. Not all updating users will get the upgrade on-demand at the same time. Grisoft usually spreads it over a period so don't be concerned if you are not getting the upgrade with your normal updating. It might be over a couple weeks at a minmum. I for one do not see a major need to rush the upgrading at this time. I would recommend be patient. If you are familiar with FileHippo, you will see on RC's link that there isn't a Change Log tab so users don't even know what the changes are yet. They are more than likely minor fixes as the numeric change is still in the suffix. DA

Woah now! I would not say that. Only one anti spyware is barely enough. Most people install 2 or 3 as these do not normally run unless to set them to run. Having more than one of these allows you to use either and if in doubt use both at any given time. There are many free ones to choose from, all with inherent strengths and weaknesses. There are also too many sound alikes which are bad news indeed so tread warily when deciding. Here are a few reputable ones I either do or have used on my computers Spywareblaster Spybot Search & Destroy Superantispyware AdAware 2007 I also had the free AVG anti spyware program installed and was quite happy with that. We'll see how good the reports are on version 8 of their Anti virus with anti spyware built in, hopefully it will be as good as both running separately.

For sure always watch each step of the download and the install for the checked items you do NOT want like extra toolbars or other stuff. In most cases the AV programs insert themselves so deeply into the system that just using the Control panel removal does not do a complete job and leaves a lot of stuff cluttering up your pc which can in some cases cause issues and conflicts so using either a dedicated removal tool from the AV company or a full app remover program will do a much more thorough job of a good clean removal. That is why I always recommend doing it that way. Most of the AV companies do provided a dedicated removal tool for their products and that is also an acceptable method. Here is a link to Corrine's blog where she provides the links to some of those removal tools. Antivirus Product Removal Tools Using those or app remover is fine. And also be sure as you go through the selection process you stick with the free version and not a trial version which will then want you to pay for it after the trial. Another good place to get the downloads from that will make sure that nothing extra is checked, you only get the item you want is at ninite site. Ninite you will need to install their installer and select what ever programs you want from the list and it will do all the rest for you. They also now offer an updater program, I have no experience with it or how well it works, but the installer for the apps has been recommended for several years now with good success. As always totally up to you what you want to use.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the free AVG. I would suggest it is the most popular free anti virus.

Long ago I read that all anti virus program providers do collaborate in the fight against the bad guys. Heck it is in their interest to do so. They have admitted they are losing the battle against the bad guys.

If you feel safer with a bought program go with NOD32 or Kaspersky, both are very highly thought of amongst the geeky population.

Thanks for the answers.
Is there any settings I need to put in to do at least weekly scannings & updates on protection? I see the scheduler but it says not started yet. It should have scanned last nite. Is there something I need to do to start it?

Another question LOL.. What ever protections do I need like something for spyware?
I don't have anyone to help me (except for pay help) so I depend on U guys (hugs)

OOOPS I just looked again & it isn't set to do anything until in the morning. I lose track of the dates :(

Dar, by default your AVG is set to run at 8a.m. If you are usually using the computer at that time yiu can set it to a different time when the computer will be on but you are likely not there. Mine runs at 4a.m.

For spyware I use Spywareblaster, Spybot Search & Destroy and AVG anti spyware version 7.5 plus I have the AVG anti rootkit installed.

These all need to be updated manually which I do about every 2 weeks unless I see an update notice at another forum. Spywareblaster runs in the background, the others require you to run them periodically. Again I do that every couple of weeks - or longer at times.
