cost of porcelain tile installation in California (Bay Area)
Comments (20)The subcontractor most likely gave you a discount for the contractor cause contractor is supplying him with steady work. $700 your just paying his hourly wage but he is not an Employee , he is a subcontractor small business owner thinking this is too high and believing that $3-4 dollars a sq ft if normal is in correct. Information on Google is way off for what to expect in a real world situation. If a union tile journeyman get paid $35-45 per hour and that shower takes $40 hours his wage alone as an employee if twice the $700 for the week. This is a direct cost for an tile company or small business . You may find someone at a low price but most likely unlicensed , doesn't pay taxes or any overhead no insurance. And not to be found if anything goes wrong. Get the job done right the first time also if tile guy is a one or two man company don't think he doesn't have overhead or expenses . Expenses add up quick go to home depot to buy a part leave spending a $100 or more . I wouldn't charge less than $40 a square foot for tile installation. Cost off living is high really high in California why would I charge less than that. Makes no sense. Just y two sense...See MoreUnexpected costs on tile installation - relevant? Justifiable?
Comments (6)Thanks Worthy, appreciate the info. With the chipped tile - we don't think it was their fault, but rather something natural accommodated for in ordering an additional 10-20% of tiles. But the tiles in the garage AREN'T chipped, so we wonder why the chipped ones were used? As we live with this tile, how easy is it going to be for us to chip it? I mean, that's one of the reasons we went with porcelain over slate was (what the tile shops told us) durability... Also - they grouted Friday, coming to seal tomorrow. Will the grout be sufficiently dry by now? We are a little concerned about the color of the grout as it is quite varied, even in a single tile edge - the variation is from almost white-ish gray to med brown (what we choose). We thought it was still drying... but it will be sealed in less than 24 hours! Thanks!...See Morewhat's the avg cost for stone install in the VA area?
Comments (3)Shopping for installers should have already happened. Based on reputation. NOT price. Because a great tile contractor would never let you go pick the Cheapo seconds from Floor and Decor. Part of how well a project comes out starts with the quality of the materials being used. You tell him what you want, and he tells you where to go to pick it out. And then HE buys it. Then he is responsible for quality control. He has no responsibility for varying thicknesses, and out if squareness, and highburin content, and all of the other issues that poor cheepchinesecrapola stone has. You let him off the hook for poor work. Who’s doing the waterproofing? Is it actually flat enough for good tile work without it being reframed? What the typical tiler gets paid on a master bath with natural stone tile (and him tweaking the framing and doing the waterproofing, and the decoupling membrane) is around 10-15K. If you want a good job that will last for years. Some opt for the 3K from the guy standing in the HD parking lot and have to rip it all out before it gets used even once. You don’t get what you don’t pay for. Who’s gonna deal with all of the extra upkeep and staining of natural stone in the coming years?...See MoreInstallation of 9x47 plank porcelian floor, I want to be specific...
Comments (21)I am not looking at doing random, but a specific pattern of tile over a large expanse with a lot of walls and joints. I measured everything, laid out a pattern, measured to make sure it was going to lay out exactly as I anticipated. Once I knew the exact size and patterning I drew a to scale drawing of the floor space to be covered and created a transparency of the floor pattern in the same scale and moved my transparency over the floor space until I found the exact layout that I wanted. (no areas with little 1" strips of flooring, joints that are relatively symmetrical in doorways and hallways, everything as balanced as I could make it covering 10 rooms and 2000 sf. Would I trust that an installer would take the time to evaluate the plan as a whole? Not unless I could afford to pay them a few extra grand. My recommendation is that if you want a specific layout - create it yourself and provide the detailed specification to the installer. Otherwise they will install based on their interpretation of your vision....See MoreJennifer Svensson
