Why isn't AVG telling me it's available? I will install it and see what happens right now I'm running 8.0.237

Hi breenthumb, I still use AVG, I have for years and I like it. I did run into an issue in late November in which I was continually asked to reboot. I posted on the AVG Forum and received the following fix from Big Al 43:(and it did work although I was not wild about the tone of the forum) "Restarting.... First check in the Advanced settings... Tools-> Advanced Settings-> Update in the 'When to update files' settings... it should be set to 'Update immediately' & 'Require confirmation from the user'... Now this should solve your restart issue.... Problem is most probably in failure of file replacing on Windows restart. Look into folder where AVG is installed whether file "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" exists. If yes, then delete existing file "updatecomps.cfg" and rename "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" to "updatecomps.cfg". I have been thinking a little more about this. As many know I live in rural America and still have to connect with an antique DUN. Because of this connection I have every application configured "not" to automatically update or check for updates. This protocol allows me to use the maximum connectiion speed available for my focused tasking. Of course, the down side is I have to do updates manually. Since the last AVG upgrade to the current version I have found that it will regularly update on its own while I am surfing even though its configured not to. I wonder if AVG is pinging home causing it to update. If I am correct this could be the answer to your concern. DA

I'm glad to see this thread re-upped. I'm reposting my original problem, hoping for a solution: I tried to update to v9 and got the message that said my Update Manager was disabled. Next message said to go to Tools/ Manager; there I'm given two choices. 1. Delete temporary update files 2. Revert virus data base to previous version. No 1 is Are you sure you want to delete temp files?, and No 2 is Warning. Some of the newest threats may not be detected. I've never run into this before when updating. HP WINXP SP2 TIA Sue

If history repeats itself it will begin selectively auto-upgrading in the next few days. Not all updating users will get the upgrade on-demand at the same time. Grisoft usually spreads it over a period so don't be concerned if you are not getting the upgrade with your normal updating. It might be over a couple weeks at a minmum.

I for one do not see a major need to rush the upgrading at this time. I would recommend be patient. If you are familiar with FileHippo, you will see on RC's link that there isn't a Change Log tab so users don't even know what the changes are yet. They are more than likely minor fixes as the numeric change is still in the suffix.

I went to the AVG Free 8.5 link to download the free program and it pointed me to the option AVG Premium Upgrade Now Free option. What happens if I choose that.. How long is it free for? Is this a safe option.

Just so you know my AVG upgraded to the v8.5.238 today through update utility. Still no signs of v.278.

I got frustrated w/avg I hate to say it, using it for a long time I uninstalled it.

Interesting. I turned off the Link Scanner as soon as it was introduced and except for one update I have never had any problem with AVG; previous or current versions.

I installed the updated version and had problems for a few days with auto up dates failing...I reset it repeatedly to no avail. Removed and re installed several times,,,finally tried a different site to install from(file hippo I think) and it "took". No problems since,

I got my update notice this morning for 8.5, and proceeded to download the free version; but over an hour later, it still hadn't installed. It's twice as big as the old version, something like almost 60 MB (I might have those numbers wrong).

Anyway, I cancelled the download and will try again. I didn't uninstall the old version first, would that be a problem? Thanks.
