avg internet security

It's time for me to get new anti-virus program, since mine is about to expire. My son gave me avg internet security to install. I was hoping some of you would share your opinion of it. Thanks.

I use AVG on 5 computers and am very happy with it. I use the 'free version.' I have used it for years without any problems. I would recommend it.

After being the flagship of free AVs for quite some time, AVG made a few bad corporate decisions in rushing releases which caused some users to migrate to something else. AVG has since righted the ship and everything is once again just fine. It quite often shows superior to other free AVs during independent tests.

An occasional bump in the road is no more often or severe than any other AV release. Please go ahead and use it.

In the interest of fairness I should share that I have the included Link Scanner disabled. I don't need it.

If you paid for Norton it's good for 12 months. Did you register it when you installed it? If so go back on the Internet and recheck in using your password and email address that you used when you first registered it. I take it you have a Norton CD. If you didn't register it when you bought it,well Install and Register it. I think you have 15 day to register after Installing. If your 15 days have expired and you didn't registered it. Not sure what will work. Try deleting what's on your computer - Install it again - register it under a new email name that you use. I did this once when it wouldn't accept my first email name. Or get help. Don't pay for it again.

Jean I installed MSE almost as soon as it came out in the final version and have no reason to want to change. I have no other safety program on this, my main computer. That is not to say anyone should follow suit and only have one. My wife's computer has MSE and Malwarebytes but I cannot remember the last time I ran a scan with that for her. I do update it occasionally of course. Last week for the first time MSE had a small fit, it did not auto update and I had to do it manually. Since then it has behaved itself. However, having a small glitch like that can tell us things, it placed an orange icon on my taskbar informing me of the issue so now I am comforted by knowing I can expect that icon in times of trouble. As with any free program you can install it to try and if you are unhappy it can easily be removed.

That's a bit hard to troubleshoot in a forum but I would look at power and the power supply or a heat related issue. A power supply thats outputting a flaky voltage can cause the CPU to reset, I assume you don't hear any of the fans spinning down for a split second when it does it? If its under a year old it should be under warrenty.

Zep I will be removing Windows Live OneCare.

How to Uninstall Windows Live OneCare.
Just in case there would be an issue, removing Anti Virus Software can be problematic at times.

The link shows the instructions and provides an uninstall tool should you have any difficulties.

Would this effect the computer not going into the hibernation mode?Ever since installing AVG for the first time a couple days ago, my machine will not hibernate,I have to shut it down the whole way and it is annoying.

My system has a desktop slideshow of the grandchildren so I can't help with that issue. I really don't see how it would as the feature is Internet dedicated.

As a thought, did you try renewing your power settings?

christophern,

If the instructions above don't work,

Do a Google search on "Can Not 'Stand By' Or 'Hibernate' After Installing AVG". Several complaints on this.

I have been thinking a little more about this.

As many know I live in rural America and still have to connect with an antique DUN. Because of this connection I have every application configured "not" to automatically update or check for updates. This protocol allows me to use the maximum connectiion speed available for my focused tasking. Of course, the down side is I have to do updates manually.

Since the last AVG upgrade to the current version I have found that it will regularly update on its own while I am surfing even though its configured not to.

I wonder if AVG is pinging home causing it to update. If I am correct this could be the answer to your concern.

I think that must have been it. I did have updates turned off, so it was not that. Switched to Avast and all is well.
Thanks
