Latest AVG upgrade ???

Does anyone know if the newest AVG upgrade (9.1, I think) is compatable with Acer computers? I seem to remember reading about a recent upgrade that wasn't.

I see that it's only 9.0, but the question remains. I have 8.0 on my Acer, running W XP pro. At work we have maybe six ACER laptops, not sure what version of AVG, and I need to know if it's safe to go ahead with their upgrades.

I have not read of any concern as you describe.

At the request of a user whose Norton expired I recently installed AVG v9.0 on her Acer XP Professional XP3 laptop. No problems installing from a saved file though the install seemed unusually long. I have since not received any complaints of updating or operation from her.

If history repeats itself it will begin selectively auto-upgrading in the next few days. Not all updating users will get the upgrade on-demand at the same time. Grisoft usually spreads it over a period so don't be concerned if you are not getting the upgrade with your normal updating. It might be over a couple weeks at a minmum. I for one do not see a major need to rush the upgrading at this time. I would recommend be patient. If you are familiar with FileHippo, you will see on RC's link that there isn't a Change Log tab so users don't even know what the changes are yet. They are more than likely minor fixes as the numeric change is still in the suffix. DA

there is a bit of a problem but AVG announced it was going to put out an update with a fix, not sure if it has done that yet. AVG was finding a part of spywareblaster that it was alerting to as a trojan when in fact it was not, it was an actual part of spywareblaster. Other than the false positives I don't know of any other problems. I would never get rid of spywareblaster myself it does what many do not it immunizes your browsers silently, the only draw back is that you do have to remember to open it weekly and update it then enable all the new protection. here is a link to an article about the AVG spywareblaster issue Attention AVG and SpywareBlaster Users

One of the safest places to download genuine software with no unwanted installers or toolbars is Filehippo. e,g, Search for "Filehippo free AVG 2015 32 bit" or 64bit. The required download button is the top right green box that has the filename on it so you can double check it is the correct version. This applies to all free software. I'm not sure what you are actually asking, but I am going to presume you chose to "run" the download rather than "save" it and install from the "save" file. If I am correct the requirement to reboot makes perfect sense. This action would be required just as if you were installing from the "save"d file or from a disk. The source file is of no concern. It is the requirement for configuration of the install. I never recommend an overwrite unless mandated by the manufacturer. Too many orphan files, obsolete code and .dlls, and chances of a conflict. A clean install of any application is the only way to go if you wish to be care free. DA

FWIW, 9.0 installed on all the Acer PC's at work with no problems afterward--about 6 laptops. I guess I'll see what happens with mine at home...

Suggestion: Ditch AVG and go with Avast. No incompatability issues with anything and more secure. JMHO

AVG 9.0 recommends removing ZoneAlarm and Comodo - nonsense?

Some users have been told to remove ZoneAlarm and Comodo. Before installing AVG because AVG is not compatible.

If it were my call, I'd go with Avast. DH has it on his PC, I had it on an old laptop, and never a glitch. If AVG weren't so difficult to uninstall, I'd put it on my own PC. Still debating. Thanks so much for all of your input.

It is my understanding that when installing new programs you need to "disable" other programs running in the background, ie. firewalls, anti-viruses, etc. Of course I do it offline.

You may have to close open applications. To disable applications is mostly an antiquated concept from way back in the Win 95/98 eras. There of course could be a specific application which may require it, but in general it is not necessary. Even installing when on line should not normally be an issue as many downloads offer the option of run or save.

I upgraded to 9.0 and only closed any programs I had open. It wasn't necessary to disable anything else. AVG installs over itself so it auto removes the previous version during the installation process.

I tried to update to v9 and got the message that said my Update Manager was disabled. Next message said to go to Tools/ Manager; there I'm given two choices.

1. Delete temporary update files

2. Revert virus data base to previous version.

No 1 is Are you sure you want to delete temp files?, and No 2 is Warning. Some of the newest threats may not be detected.

I've never run into this before when updating.

In the past the upgrade/update terminology was more defined. The word upgrade normally meant an elevation of an application from the current version to a new version; i.e. Firefox v3.5.2 to Firefox v3.5.3. The word update normally referred to a regularly released definition file; i.e anti-virus dat files.

In recent years members of forums, computer websites and software companies have become cavalier and careless in their writings using the two words almost interchangeably. The confusion is increasing.

I'm getting offers to upgrade to 9 but when I check out more info, it is not free. I'm considering going to Avast. Is it the one that you need to register every so often?

I'm glad to see this thread re-upped.

with Avast you do have to do a once a year registration which takes about a minute to do and is extremely simple a basic copy and paste.

Sue in the AVG control panel does it show the Update Manager as being disabled or inactive? You might try uninstalling the version you have and then reinstall that version or then install the new 9.0.

Terrapots when you click on the more info notice you have to look at the very bottom of the next window in small print to find the free version. Rest assured it is still free but you can go with Avast as well.

Bob, it says Update Manager is Disabled. I have AVG v8.5.475.
I'll uninstall that and get v9.

I did the uninstall/install and when it finished, the UpMger was still disabled, but there was a way to reset scan times which I did. That changed it to enabled.

We shall see!

I don't know, Bob. I had always had it set for 4 AM, but this time it said 3AM and was grayed out. I changed it back to 4AM.
