advice on large custom framed mirrors for vanity
Comments (14)If you want to "hang" the mirror by the frame, then a weak frame could be a liability. I've built many custom mirrors over the years, probably 3 or 4 for each house I've built. You can have them built from scratch for a few hundred dollars. You can sometimes take a store-bought frame that might be a little flimsy and back it with a piece of 1/4" luan and staple the luan to the frame. That'll stiffen the frame and joints. This does depend on the width of the frame though, it might not work with narrow frames. You can paint the edges of the luan black to minimize them showing from the side. The easiest is what has been mentioned, hang the mirror glass on the wall, then build the frame over and around it. The frame holds no weight an the mirror will never tilt. When hanging heavy or large custom mirrors that I've built, I usually hang them with a french cleat. Should the need arise, the french cleat makes it easy to remove the mirror from the wall. And when on the wall they'll always be secure and level. Mongo...See MoreHanging a wood framed mirror over a wall to wall bathroom mirror
Comments (33)ThatÂs what I was afraid of. I didnÂt want to put ideas in peopleÂs headsÂbut that is the reservation I have. I think having to use it on one side of the wall, asymmetrically, doesnÂt work. I was SO sure it would look great, and be really like the finishing touch in this room. Darn! The thickness, bulkiness, of it bothers me too, in that place. Too much mass. I thought, before I tried it, that it would balance the weight of the solid looking vanity. Instead it just makes it look like too much weight on the left side of the room and nothing on the right. Having to one side bothers me with the light fixture too, and I love that light. It doesnÂt show well in the photos, but is a stained glass repro I ordered from a craftsman lighting company, in a custom size. The mirror is discontinued, so I canÂt get another to balance it better. It doesnÂt look right centered on the big mirror either. Too odd when you are standing in front of the vanity. Sigh. I love this mirror. Buying this one when it went on clearance was what made me decide to have a craftsman bathroom in the first place! (Well, that and it opens off a craftsman family room.) I have one open wall on that room, where I used to have a framed picture. IÂll try propping it up there. The craftsman family room already has a mirror....See MoreMaster bath: One sink or two? One large wall mirror or two mirrors?
Comments (19)I recently remodeled and changed the double sinks for one sink plus a nice area where I can sit down for my ablutions. I wanted the increased counter space as well as the increased storage space. I don't spend that much time over a sink anyway so I don't see what the big deal is to have one sink. I especially think it is ridiculous when I see two sinks crammed into a small vanity with a tiny bit of counter space - so big deal you have a dysfunctional bathroom space but you have two sinks. I remodeled for my needs and my aesthetic vision. I am not planning to move and if someone doesn't like it, they can fairly easily just reconnect the plumbing and add the second sink. In terms of mirror treatment, I did a ceiling to counter wall to wall mirror but then put two different mirror treatments above the sink and the "grooming area". The wall to wall mirrors lightens and enlarges my rather small space and the two different mirror treatments differentiate it as well. I also have two Art Deco style sconces above the sink and a version a makeup lighting above the grooming sit down area....See MoreMake a frame for existing mirror, or buy a pricey new mirror?
Comments (6)You probably can't get the mirror off the wall, because they often (at least where I live) glue them on. Frames are an easy diy (or have a carpenter do it) using molding from a big box store or a molding/trim store. I'm not sure an actual picture frame would work, depending on the "rabbet" depth.... I suppose you could ask, but that certainly sounds expensive, compared to just mitered-corner molding easily spray painted and glued on to the existing mirror....See Moretikatoo
