External HDD has driver problem

I would try using a linux live cd, boot from the live cd then see if you can see the external hard drive listed on it as one of the drives, if so then you can access the drive from there and retrieve the data off of it.

There seems to be an issue with older drivers, try the link below to update your drivers.

Failing that or Raven's suggestions above I think I would be taking the external drive apart. Then you can check to see if the data cable has come loose or remove the hard drive and slave it off the computer.

What's the 106 about?

Smitty, You are right, I was simply ignorant. Unfortunately the good help I got on this forum came after I placed the order. I had asked for help in an earlier thread and got none of the good stuff this thread produced. Well, counting shipping two ways and the 15% restocking I figure my error cost me about $20, education comes many ways and most are not free. As for Newegg, I've ordered from them before and have been satified, and on this order they delivered quickely and exactly what I ordered. I STILL think they would do their customers a good "turn/favor" if they would include in the web listing "please check to see if your unit is serial or parallel" then say "laptop replacement" or whatever they said, not going back to look at this moment. I may order the correct drive from them, but only if I can't find it somewhere else. Newegg has earned the loss of this sale in my "book".

Bus Driver: Several mornings, when I turned on my computer, I got the message that the Maxtor "wasn't there" or something like that. However, I found that if I clicked on the Remove Hardware Safely icon in the System Tray and then unplugged both USB and electric cables and plugged them in again after a minute (even a short time seems to reset it), then I "get it back". For the last three days, I haven't had to do that; it hasn't given me any trouble on start-up, and the mouse has not frozen when I checked the things inside the drive, so I am OK with the way it is now. After all, it only cost $99.99 for 500GB. I wouldn't give it away, although I admit that the next external drive I buy will probably NOT be a Maxtor! Maybe there is hope for your drive, too. You can always turn it off by clicking on the Sys. Tray icon and choosing Exit, but if you are only concerned about saving energy, you can do what CBoy does. I have mine set to turn off if it isn't used for 10 minutes.

Not really, haven't seen any symptoms like that listed anywhere! This is a very strange problem, there are lots of people having this problem even before upgrading to Windows 10 (even back as far as Windows XP). I think that it happening after you installed Windows 10 was just a coincidence. My Touch Screen on my Acer Tablet stopped working shortly after installing Windows 10. Ended up being a Loose Flat Flex Cable inside the Tablet, not Windows 10, but my first thought was Windows 10 had caused it! I'll keep looking to see if I can find anything else. Most of what I'm finding are taking me down the same path, Monitor (Display) Settings. Guess I'll steer away for going down that path for now. I do have one other thought: Maybe your Power Supply is going bad and it's not producing enough power to run the computer and the monitor both! Only real way to check this is to replace the Power Supply with a New one. There are ways to check them (if you're an electrician and have the equipment and knowhow)! I don't think it's the Hardware inside the Laptop or the Monitor wouldn't work on Battery Power! BTW, you can pick up new power supplies on Ebay at not too many $$$$.

Thanks Raven and Owbist for the suggestions. I have looked at some of the links and tried to download driver buy could not seem to find one that seemed to work. It may be my choice of the driver. I will keep trying. Owbist I am a little afraid to open the HDD enclosure. By the way 106 should have been 10 t0 the 6th or Thanks a million. LOL. I may just get another drive and work on this one as I can. Again Thanks a million.

John, I understand that fear - to a degree. However you currently have a useless drive with data on that you wish to recover. Taking it to a shop will possibly cost as much or more than a new drive.

First try using the drive on another computer if possible. Have you considered the possibility that the power supply has failed?

If that fails look around the edges, from all the sites I visited I cannot see all around but there might be a snap fit type feature holding the outer casing to the body of this thing. Try prying along the seams with a thin flat blade screwdriver. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
