External HDD has driver problem

I have been using a SimpleTech SimpleDrive #96300-40001-001

for several years. First with a local built XP pro without any problems. Now I am using it with a Coompaq Presario and

Win7 since October 09. A week or two ago the drive did not appear in My Computer but did appear in the Device/Printer page. Its properties there indicated a driver problem. The company is associated with Hitachi now and I tried everything that they said to do without any luck. I could not find a driver for this model and the support information about drivers was of little help. The drive is getting power but the blue indicator light comes on blinking and stays on without stopping. I have tried replacing the USB cable and using different USB ports but again no luck. Can anyone give me a way to get into the drive to retrieve th information that is there? Thanks 106.

I would try using a linux live cd, boot from the live cd then see if you can see the external hard drive listed on it as one of the drives, if so then you can access the drive from there and retrieve the data off of it.

There seems to be an issue with older drivers, try the link below to update your drivers.

Failing that or Raven's suggestions above I think I would be taking the external drive apart. Then you can check to see if the data cable has come loose or remove the hard drive and slave it off the computer.

What's the 106 about?

I had my old drive that was in my original HP Pavilion computer. I was told that the drive had crashed about 2 years after I had gotten the computer. Well I just put the drive aside and forgot about it until recently. I hooked it up to the Sabrent 5 in 1 Cable to Serial ATA transfer thing and hooked everything to the drive and then plugged it in to the USB port on the tower of my home built computer. It was recognized and I was able to reformat it. Now I just need to get a new hard drive enclosure.Thanks to Owbist and Terry I was able to do it without having to call my son and bother him with a lot of questions.

mikie, when I right click it and then click Eject, I get the message there is no disk inserted. Please insert disk and try again. I just realized that you tried helping me back in August with this blasted thing! On the F removable disk properties, the General tab shows this: Name: HP USB Device I don't understand this at all, as the only HP product I own is a 3 in 1 printer. I have three external drives constructed by using hard drives pulled from computers that were headed to the recycle center. I purchased hard drive enclosures from eBay and added the drives. The installation was very easy. The drives are recognised very quickly and data transfer is fast enough with USB 2.0. They act very much like a flash drive and no driver is required unless you have Windows 98 or older. I paid less then $20 for the enclosures and got the drives for free. All of my enclosures have on/off switches and LEDs indicating power and usage. One uses a notebook drive and it can fit in my shirt pocket very nicely.I would recommend converting an extra drive if you have one. External drives are great for additional storage. They are also excellent for sharing and transporting files between several computers.

If computer works ok otherwise, I would open my computer, right click the main drive, C? ... choose properties. Use Disk Cleanup there. also System cleanup is there and will remove all but your last Restore point but clean up some other files too. Restore points often will screw up when the master boot record or partition tables get changed or messed up, which happens with use something other than windows like PartionMagic to make or resize a partition. Or hard drive failing. After saying/thinking, I would also run a diskcheck from the same C drive properties/system tools. Maybe do that first.

Thanks Raven and Owbist for the suggestions. I have looked at some of the links and tried to download driver buy could not seem to find one that seemed to work. It may be my choice of the driver. I will keep trying. Owbist I am a little afraid to open the HDD enclosure. By the way 106 should have been 10 t0 the 6th or Thanks a million. LOL. I may just get another drive and work on this one as I can. Again Thanks a million.

John, I understand that fear - to a degree. However you currently have a useless drive with data on that you wish to recover. Taking it to a shop will possibly cost as much or more than a new drive.

First try using the drive on another computer if possible. Have you considered the possibility that the power supply has failed?

If that fails look around the edges, from all the sites I visited I cannot see all around but there might be a snap fit type feature holding the outer casing to the body of this thing. Try prying along the seams with a thin flat blade screwdriver. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
