"Time Machine" - External Backup

I have "Time Machine" by Seagate. It worked fine with backing up both my Mac and my PC. Then I got a new Mac (replaced the former Mac) and Time Machine has never worked on this one. I get "OS X can't repair the disk "Time Machine." You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't ..." blah blah.

I've googled and found several different options to fix, including repartitioning, reformatting, etc., but it seems that this may be a special case because it worked on one Mac right up to the last day I had it and never, from day 1, worked on this new Mac.

Any thoughts?

See if this works for you! You'll need to reinstall the NTFS paragon drivers available from the Seagate website.

what acronis does is different than just doing a back up of files, acronis takes a snap shot of your entire hard drive including the operating system so it is an image, then should you need to restore from it you would be restoring every single thing including the operating system. In doing just data and file backups should you need to do a full reformat then you would need to have either a copy of your operating system cd to re-install your OS or the recovery cd, and then you could use your file and data backups to put those back in place once you had re-installed your OS and done all the many updates for it, which can be a long and tedious procedure. So it is a better way to backup when using an image you can be back up and running in very short order at the exact point in time that you did your last image save. You could certainly leave the data you have saved on the external hard drive and just make a new folder to put your acronis images into you seem to have plenty of room available. Usually the acronis version that comes with a branded drive may be a bit different than the stand alone version of acronis you can buy but I would think it would be just fine. there are some very good tutorials available on how to use acronis if you need those just ask or google for it. In my opinion an image backup is the best way to go.

I would certainly use an external hard drive for back ups. In fact I have just swapped my hard drives around to do that. But it will be for an Acronis image of each of my 3 computers, not necessarily for personal data. Although that might also be done. Besides my backup images of the other drives I keep up to date anti virus, firewalls and spyware programs on my external drive so if friends get into trouble I have those programs at hand to install if they do not have then already.

I am sorry that I brought up this subject but it is a problem as I own it goes with nothing I have including the external drive. I worry that it will cause conflict with other programs. I have a foggy brain now and I don't know when it is appropriate to stop asking for help. I asked a lot of you and there may be a cut off that I should understand. It is, of course my fault, because this happened before when I got to a critical point in a graphics link. It was a weekend and that has to be the worst time here. I ended up going to a computer service and they did find the problem. I find it an honor to get help from this team who seems to love to help and the challenge. If you are not interested in the question do you ignore it, wait for a knowledgeable person to step in or let time go buy and I will understand. My manners concerning forum etiquette are a mess as I have proven lately.

I have a 2TB Passport and two smaller external drives. I use a 17" Dell laptop with Windows 7. Just purchased in July because my previous laptop hard drive failed. I did not want Windows 8 so I really had to shop around for something with W7. I currently have no dedicated office so the work I do is generally while sitting on the sofa. Not optimum but it is what it is. As such, a NAS would not be practical. I know about NAS, they were used in the design department I used to work in. I'm tired of dealing with external drives and remembering to manually back up. It got me in trouble once, it will get me in trouble again. The cloud is really the way I want to go. I didn't know that bells and whistles would go off if I tried to upload 30Gb of photos. I'll contact my ISP and see what they suggest. Thanks. Jodi-

I suspect there's also an easy way to access the Mac files directly from the PC, so as to run the Mac file backup from the PC over the network. With the drive connected to the PC and not the Mac.

Hi, Snidley - I'm not on a PC - I'm on a Mac. Don't have a PC any more.

Bugspop1, I didn't have any luck even after downloading the drivers. Turns out I've got some other issues, as well, so I have an appointment with the "Geniuses" at Apple tonight.

Can't say I've ever been in one of their places. I'm not really a Mac Person. I have tinkered with them here and there with some luck! Told my daughter when she bought her MacBook Pro, that if she had any problems she was on her own, but I could try if she wanted me to!

The Geniuses are truly that, in my opinion. I've always had great experiences with them. In this case, it turned out to be "user error" (that would be me...). But they fixed that and a couple of other niggly things in about 20 minutes. Perfectamundo.
