External hard drive for backups + graphics s/w

We are looking into large (500GB) external hard drives to store large graphics applications (Photoshop Elements, and the like) as well as serve as a back-up drive. In other words, this is where we'd run the applications and store back-ups.

Currently we use nothing except CDs on which I backup important files and photos. I'd prefer something like the one-touch systems that do it all at once (and a reliable system that is easy to set up and maintain).

Is it a common and good practice to use the HD for both purposes -- for running applications and storing back-ups?
