Slow bootup and one other problem

For about a month, my XP SP3 computer with 3GB RAM has been very slow to boot up, whereas previously it had been quite fast. I checked items in startup and disabled everything except those having to do with security. This did not help. I have cleaned up and defragged. Again no improvement. I get the MS welcome window and then my wallpaper appears. Then it will take a full minute or more for the desktop icons and taskbar to appear. Once that happens, my Avast updates and I'm ready to go. E-mail downloads fast and most web pages open in a timely fashion. So, I need some advice with this.

My second problem just began about two or three days ago. I have been using Chrome as my default browser. I have been having trouble with it "freezing" or maybe "crashing" is a better term. This seems to happen when I click on a link in an e-mail and has happened with several different links. When this happens, I cannot do a CAD or anything. Sometimes the hourglass will appear, sometimes not. Eventually, I must resort to using the power switch on the computer to shut down. I'm thinking there must be some conflict causing this, but I don't know where to begin in tracking this down. I uninstalled and re-installed Chrome, but it still happened last night.

This is all very frustrating because after installing a new HDD a few months ago, this machine has been very fast. I pride myself on keeping a clean, lean machine. Any help with either of these problems will be greatly appreciated.

Is Zone Alarm installed? Disable it for a bit see if boot changes..

Here is one thing you can do to improve boot time it will speed it up a bit.

Open MSCONFIG again.

Look at the Boot.ini tab. In the box labeled Timeout change the time from the default 30 to 3. This changes how long it waits before booting. See how much improvement occurs I don't expect it to fix it all, but it should free up some boot time.

Run this program too:

Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer From here click Here
to your desktop.

Double-click TFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin

* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.

Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

Lets see where we are after this, may want to see a Hijackthis log, just to check.

Your description sounds like a program at start up or even a driver is slowing it down. Zone Alarm is always suspect in slow boot ups.

Zep, I use Online Armor as my firewall, not ZA. I checked and boot.ini was set at 10, so I changed it to 3. I also used TFC, which took only a few seconds, and now my computer is booting up like it used to. I can't believe a little change like that would make so much difference.

As to the other problem, I changed my default browser to FF and went to one of the troublesome links, and it worked just fine. It was a PDF file from HP about restoring old photos. The other link was Icelandic---web cams of the volcano. It still did not open, but did not freeze up FF, either. So it may be that Chrome has some bugs causing this. I have used it for some months and just started having this trouble.

It's difficult to analyze from the photos, but it may be phomopsis twig blight. If so, then you have serious problems. It wiped out my entire planting of 13 bushes. By the time I diagnosed it, fungicides were of no help. I believe it arrived on the plants from the nursery, as I have 3 other older plants on the other side of the property that are very healthy. The disease discouraged me from replanting. Good luck.

I won't go to BJ's on a weekend, that's for sure! I don't know about regular grocery stores, the traffic may be spread around a little since there are so many (and they tend to be clustered close together in town). This Sunday market (10Am - 1PM) has been busy for years - either non-churchgoers (lots of yuppies) or people stop by after church (it's within walking distance of 2 churches in that town). I'm surprised that it has dropped off since school started, with another month of market to go, if it had been busy all summer. I don't think kids tend to have Sunday morning sports. Now, Saturday (any time) I think could be impacted now, I know some of my relatives couldn't make our great-uncle's funeral at 11AM on a Sat b/c of soccer games, etc. People may go shopping on weeknights in a well-lit, heated store, but from what I saw last Wed (which was beautiful, just had to throw a long-sleeved shirt over my T shirt as the sun was setting) they just aren't stopping by on their way home from work any more now that school started - either sports, daycare, or wanting to get home and make dinner for their latch-key kids ASAP must be keeping them. Didn't even pick up after 5 (market ends at 6). Not expecting much business tonight but trying to get rid of the last (or almost last) of my tomatoes, and all this apple butter I was asked to make! I still think weekends (esp. Sun) might be best for non-summer markets - esp. in the fall, people want to go out leaf-peeping here, might stop by if a market looks like fun (maybe not ours in a strip mall parking lot), entertainment, apples, cider, pumpkins, etc. Agritourism is big here, harvest festivals and corn mazes, PYO apples and pumpkins are places people will take their kids. Only people buying stuff for meals are those picking up their CSA shares. I also think people tend to cook less this time of year - too busy, looking for something quick, may not even be eating together. I know our schedules get crazy - seems like DS has something (Scouts or sports) every night, lots of weekends too.

LindaC, it's all in what you're comfortable with. Remember, I'm the person who has had a couple of house fires and so I don't ever light a fire in the fireplace and I refuse to burn candles. It's my own particular phobia... I do have an old Presto pressure cooker which I don't use a lot but I really like it for certain thins. Elery uses it to make beans, I'd prefer to just dump mine in the crockpot in the morning. I do use it to make chop suey for Ashley, even slightly tough round comes out fork tender. I don't like taditional chili in the crockpot, the ground beef "overcooks". I am a huge consumer of vegetables, though, and sometimes make a vegetarian chili that's delicious. Plus, like Chase, it gets used as a "warming" device for office potlucks, to keep soup warm and even to make oatmeal because I'm not a morning person and would never make oatmeal before I go to work, and I detest the instant stuff. I agree with all of you about this "slow" forum. I used to log onto "The Single Life" (at a year or so ago) and it was terrific! The topics were interesting and at times people talked to each other almost at "real time" speed. Then this forum went away. I'm not sure why, but I searched for a few months to no avail. I accidently found it again when I was bored and started searching the big forum. I'm going to try and keep up with this one again, I remember when I loved reading what others had to say....I do remember people would post topics such as, asking questions about certain aspects of dating, relationships, life events, breaking up, and in general how we feel about being single and how we survive in our day to day existance. It was like a group of friends getting together for drinks and just discussing "life". I hope it can be that way again..... ~Susan

Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe 2.0.3 bata version is ok to use either one on that page.
� Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
� Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
� By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
� Click on Install.
� It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
� Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
� Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
� Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log� (no attachments) into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Great! As always, you have been a tremendous help. I still cannot believe that changing one little item made the boot up process so much faster. It's now taking only about 20-25 seconds for everything to load once the wallpaper appears.

Zep, tried out TFC and seemed to work pretty good. When it was finished, it left two icons for desktop.ini files on the desktop.
When I open the file, this is what is in one of them.
