Are all slow cookers problematic?
Comments (23)I have two slowcookers tha I use pretty often. One is a 6 qt programmable Smart Pot (I think it by Slower Cooker/Rival--but I'm at work, and I can't remember exactly). I bought it at BBB. The other one is a 4 qt Hamilton Beach--it isn't programmable. I also bought it a BBB. I find both very useful--they don't substitute for my oven, but I do find them useful and totally w/o problems. I use the large one for stews, eg, I recently made what my guests thought was a terrific Osso Bucco. I use the small one for overnight oatmeal, apple butter, and to prepare carmelized onions for onion soup. I had both of the crock pots going making turkey stock with the turkey carcases after Thanksgiving. BTW, there are some terrific (healthy) slow cooker recipes in Cooking Light (on their website), in Eating Well magazine, and then Cooking Light has a slow cooker cookbook that I bought recently from Amazon. Interesting reading about the AC slow cooker. Honestly, I was tempted by one feature, and that is that you can brown meat in the slow cooker dish on the stovetop before proceeding to the slow cooking. That seem's very nice to me since I often brown my meat in a skillet before dumping into the ceramic slow cooker dish. But I can't really justify buying yet another toy.......See MoreCrockpot vs slow cooker
Comments (11)Some people(!) like to use a cast iron dutch oven and place it in the oven at 225 degrees. It does the same exact thing as a crock pot/slow cooker. The only drawback I know of to this method is that some cooks don't like to leave the oven on for a long time. I use both depending on whether I need the oven for other things. It's easier for me to brown a piece of meat in a dutch oven then place it in the oven, then drag out my crock pot (and not brown the meat or dirty another pan), however, there's a place for both....See MoreIf you could only have one: Slow cooker / rice cooker
Comments (26)LindaC, it's all in what you're comfortable with. Remember, I'm the person who has had a couple of house fires and so I don't ever light a fire in the fireplace and I refuse to burn candles. It's my own particular phobia... I do have an old Presto pressure cooker which I don't use a lot but I really like it for certain thins. Elery uses it to make beans, I'd prefer to just dump mine in the crockpot in the morning. I do use it to make chop suey for Ashley, even slightly tough round comes out fork tender. I don't like taditional chili in the crockpot, the ground beef "overcooks". I am a huge consumer of vegetables, though, and sometimes make a vegetarian chili that's delicious. Plus, like Chase, it gets used as a "warming" device for office potlucks, to keep soup warm and even to make oatmeal because I'm not a morning person and would never make oatmeal before I go to work, and I detest the instant stuff. Comments (21)Hi Everyone...I ususally just 'take in' and enjoy all the wonderful advice you all give here. I just have to add my 2 cents along with a question to you. I also have a Hamilton Beach Crock Pot (6 qt). I bought it at Walmart and paid about $39, for it. It's wonderful and I use it almost every other week. There is just my husband and I now at home, but I usually make enough of whatever for a couple of meals >> Pot Roast/Pork Roast, etc. I love the fact, that when I set it up, and go about my day, when I come home, it's like 'Someone' Cooked Dinner. So for that part, I love it. NOW, my question. I just purchased a 20 qt Cooks Essential Electric Roaster with timer, from QVC. I haven't used it yet...I'm a little nervous. I'm thinking of using it as an extra oven for the Holidays. Not to do my Turkey in..but for other dishes. Can anyone give me some tips or advice, as to you using it this way? Will I be able to use my own casserole dishes to put in there (on the rack) and do I need to add water? Haven't a clue..the receipe book does not give enough details on this. Thanks so much, and once again >>> I love All your great advice to one another....See Morejerrymb
