Privacy laws yet lack of privacy at the drugstore

Most everywhere these days if you ask a question somewhere you're told they can't tell you anything because of privacy laws or whatever. Ontario here has pretty strict privacy laws in that regard. How here's my beef.
A while back I went to my local drugstore to get a prescription filled and when they handed it to me they started explaining the ins and outs of it. Meanwhile other people are standing around or sitting in the chairs waiiting or just happen to be shopping in close proximity. Everyone can hear and soon know what your ailment is. It's worse in a smaller city like this where there's virtually 2 degrees of seperation. How do I know if my neighbors aren't just out of sight etc.
Again today I went in and while I was standing there a woman was picking up her prescription and the pharmacist started asking her questions which got into a conversation. Within 3 minutes I knew this womans complete medical history, that she'd had parts of her bowels removed etc. I don't think she or the pharmacist even realized. After they were done I spoke to the pharmacist ( I like the staff there a lot) and mentioned it to her. They do have a small room off to the side she told me for consultations but doesn't seem like they utilize it unless asked. I never even knew it was there..

Even the setup of the "consult" room isn't that great because you still have to come out and go back to the pharmacy counter and pay etc..

So I'm just wondering. Am I the only person who this sort of thing bothers.
What do you guys do in this situation.

It's not a small little store either, it's one of those big chain drug stores. While there's numerous other ones in town they all seem to be set up the same way for lack of privacy.

Prescriptions here come with a printed sheet listing the directions, side effects, and contraindications. The important cautions are also on a label on the bottle or pack. So generally there's no discussion. If you have a question about your special circumstances you call your doctor about it.
But I have had a supermarket checker in a busy line ask me how well an intimate product worked for me!

Peter, they do the same thing at our pharmacy. Moe is on a number of medications and any time a prescription is new or one changes the pharmacist always goes over the changes with me. It isn't often that they tell me something that I wasn't already aware of, but it has happened that a prescription was changed , (increased or decreased) and brought it to my attention. Even though they also include an information sheet with the prescription, I think it is a good practice for them to go over everything, especially with an older customer.

I am sometimes amazed at what a customer will share with the pharmacist in the presence and within hearing distance of others.

Birthing photos are now a big thing on Facebook. I'm talking babies covered in yuck. Some even show crowning shots, with the mother's anatomy up close and personal. These aren't a few extreme cases either; it's a trend. And the photos are widely shared, not private. They get lots of Likes. What's especially disturbing--besides the obvious--is the way these posters don't recognize any right to react to their photos with anything except admiration. No one ever dares to object, because they know what would happen. "Don't be a hater. What's wrong with you? No one is offended by this!" So the poster thinks everybody approves. And the trend spreads. This is a classic characteristic of narcissists: the inability to recognize that other people and their viewpoints even exist as part of objective, independent reality. But we do exist. And we judge. Good luck getting a job from me in the future after I've seen your business in all its glory.

"He said they'd turned the man in to the police because he was canvassing the entire part of town, and had no license or permit. So....was he canvassing for thievery? Possibly." very possibly. I used to do the licensing in a nearby town. those going door to door were considered 'peddlers' and needed licensed also. for them that involved a police background check - fingerprinting and they had to carry a photo ID badge. That I made for them. Surprise - one day when I went home for lunch - to find one at my neighbors painting house numbers on the curb. Imagine his surprise that I didn't believe he had a license... lol! If he did I'd recognize him - and he would have recognized me. I called the city PD to come check him out/run him off. our city was serious about keeping strangers/unknowns out of the neighborhoods-they encouraged people to report anyone suspicious in the area, including anyone going door to door who could not produce the photo ID card. privacy: at this point, my bedroom window faces my tv/computer room window... my front door faces my back door - lol! living in the country on over 2 acres, I don't worry a lot about who can see in. I usually sleep with a section of my bedroom curtains pulled back. I'd move into the new place with no window coverings except the bedroom - those windows I'd want covered while sleeping. my boy used to be cabled out front close to my window so no one could get near it w/o me knowing. temporarily he is penned in the back while work is being done. I'm sure i'll end up with something on every window but it's not a priority right off. It will be by June - to block the sun/heat tho. outside - I don't think too much about being seen when I'm on the land - there aren't that many people around me yet - and about half of those in close view are gone during the day. but I will be having new people to the west of me - I'll be planting numerous trees on that side very soon. probably 4 fast growing evergreens! it's more that I just don't want to see them than concern that they see me. The number of homes close to me (w/in 5-15 acres) has tripled in the past 12 yrs! on the back and west side I'll have to put up some sun blocking coverings for summer time. In the summer I'm closed up pretty much (from the sun/heat). Late Oct thru late May I like things pretty open- except on the very windy days when dirt is blowing everywhere.

imamommy, I have four birth sons, 24, 23, 19, and 14. I have three foster kids who are still part of my family, two boys and one girl. The boys i got when they were sixteen, they are now in their early 20's. THe girl i got when she was fourteen, she is now 21, and married with a baby of her own. They lived under my care until they were adults. My step kids are a daughter , 12 ( almost 13), and a stepson 8. We have my stepkids pretty well half time, in a joint physical custody situation. Originally, mom had full physical custody, but lost it a few years ago when she was reported to the CPS by stepdaughters school, for biting stepdaughter all over her arms leaving huge bruises. Mom was given a conditional discharge and placed on the child abuse registry and we were given joint physical custody. Both my husband and I are on the same page as far as parenting style. We are not authoritarian parents, but we arent particularly permissive either. Our list of rules is fairly short, but those rules we do have, are to be obeyed without exception, and there are consequences for disobeying.The older they get, the fewer rules there are. We have family meetings, informally called in the kitchen, and our family slogan is that everyone gets to have a say. We get the final say but in our kitchen meetings, every child can feel safe to say what they think, what they want to do about it, and know that their opinion carries weight. We have a baton ( a plastic spoon) that the person speaking holds when they are speaking, and when you are holding the spoon no one can interupt you. Family rule. WE also go out to eat or have everyone over as an extended family once every two weeks, at which time a lot of issues are brought up. With the exception of the youngest stepson, every one of my kids, foster kids and stepkids have told both my husband and I that they think we are the wisest people on the planet and know that we will give them good advice, even if they dont want to hear it. I take that as a tremendous compliment. In fact, when we moved a few years back so that we could maintain the joint custody, ALL of my children and foster children also picked up roots and moved close to us, across country. They didnt want to be away from us, or their brothers and sisters. We are extremely close knit. Of course every family has to develop its own way of communicating, I just really really oppose the sneaking into peoples private things. I think that if you are going to read someones diary, you should tell them, then at least they can modulate their opinions. Both hubby and I still keep a journal, and all of our kids do as well, as a way to put thoughts in order and to express emotion. Most therapists s uggest it as a great tool to help you understand what you are really feeling, since emotions can be so overwhelming at t imes. But to invade that of someone elses.....it really hits me wrong. One of my sons, the one who is now 19, had adjustment problems for about a year, when he entered his early teens. I had the attitude thing with him, the lack of ambition, the wanting not to go to school etc. One thing we did do , was talk and communicate without anger or judgement even when I wanted to pull my hair out. We had a great therapist who helped us both to understand how to do that. He is doing fine now, and has been for the last few years. My foster daughter, when she came to me, was promiscuous and using drugs. Within six months, we turned that around as well, again with the help of a godsend of a therapist. Now my stepdaughter is disinterested in school, lying about her homework, and hiding things from her mother and stepfather, although she is being open with her dad and I. It upsets her biomom when stepdaughter hides things from her that she freely talks about with us, but some of the things that biomom, or more particularly her husband are doing , are bound to cause mistrust. For instance her mom DOES search her room regularly. Her mom and stepfather both openly compare her to her stepsisters, who are on the honour roll. Her stepdad reads her mail. She isnt allowed to have unmonitored phone conversations. She has been told nothing about periods , or sex, and didnt even know how babies are made until I broke down and told her. My stepdaughter has done nothing to cause her parents mistrust, other than to lie about grades and homework (which she does because she gets grounded indefinitely for not getting a good grade). Her biomom and stepdad unfortunately dont deal well with frustration , and thinks cracking down harder is the answer to a problem. Its making it worse, although we dont have any problems with stepdaughter when she is with us. Mom resents the fact that daughter is so easy with us and so secretive and withdrawn with them. Its not mom, its stepdad, according to stepdaughter. But biomom will have to see that for herself. I try to stay out of it as much as possible, because its not my place to critisize how mom raises her own daughter. YES, i think she is making big mistakes, but they are mistakes common to a lot of parents. Parents tend to forget that when kids are young, I SAID SO is a valid way to deal with them but as teens, you are dealing with young adults who are their own person, and rules without relationship lead to rebellion. A lot of people are totally in shock when their youngster stops being intimidated into doing exactly what they are told. The teen years do get easier with each child, because you have experience with it, as of course you know since soem of your kids are grown. BUt for someone dealing with a teen for the first time, it can be very bewildering. Your young cub grows teeth :) As I have said before, Praise works better than punishment, and if you want them to trust you, be trustworthy.

I think "right to privacy" is a too frequently misunderstood canard. This is not a right of the same stature as the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Yes, law enforcement has to respect certain boundaries in the performance of their duties. That's simply to keep THEIR conduct lawful and not unnecessarily intrusive. But necessarily intrusive within the law is fine. What the IT revolution now enables is the accumulation, correlation and easy access to already public information, as others have said. If the authorities and law enforcement want to be able to access information about people and places in the performance of their duties, we all benefit from that. If you think about it, there are many times that criminals have been apprehended because of cameras in public places. Remember how quickly the British authorities could identify and apprehend those involved in public transport terrorist bombings? How about the quick identification of the two brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon attack? All because of video recording.

We also get " the drill " on a sheet of paper but often if there is something new my pharmacist will come talk to me about it. Maybe a drug that has gone generic, or a different shape to the pill. Never anything I felt was something I didn't want someone else to hear.

I've never felt like there was a privacy issue. Maybe I should, but I truly have never been concerned.

I've never had a pharmacist talk to me about any prescription, but they always ask if I have any questions or need to consult with the pharmacist. I tend to ask my questions at the doctor's office before I agree to take the prescription.

However, like Ann T, I'm amazed at what people will "share" in public, not just standing at a counter, but talking on cell phones as they wander about the store. I hear about sex lives, toenail fungus, children's misbehavior, finances, all from people wandering about in public talking on their cell phones like no one else in the world is there.

Real pet peeve of mine - our drug store for many years was closing and sold their business to a chain. No notice, the day it was done it was in the newspaper! In my opinion that is selling your personal medical information. Don't get me started on cell phones. Personally I think every cell phone sold should have an icon "phone manners".

Telling people about side effects and what medications are in the presence of others is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Huge. I will even lie and say I've received a prescription before so no one will know what it is or the side effects. And I cannot stand to hear the side effects of other's meds. Who wants to know about diarrhea? UGH!!!! Isn't there another way to help someone avoid the problems? There must be.

My peeve is that I get a particular painkiller for really bad tension headaches, and for the past year or so there seems to be a new policy of making the counter staff ask, "Are you taking any other medication?"
Now, I'm also on medication which has a remote chance of interacting with this, and I know if I say, Yes, ---------------, they'll give me a big lecture about how dangerous it is etc etc. At the same time I don't want to lie.
I have discussed it with my doctor and she sees no problems with my taking this particular painkiller. It's not as if I'm popping them six times a day.
One time when asked The Question, I said, "Yes, and I've discussed it with my doctor, and she's OK with it."
"So what are you taking?"
"I've discussed it with my doctor, and she's OK with it."
But what are you taking?"
"I've discussed it with my doctor, and she's OK with it."
"But I need to know what you're taking."
"No offence, but you are a shop assistant with no medical training. I have no intention of discussing my medications with you, I'm over 50 and have been using this medication for many years now and know what its effects are."
"But I have to refer it to the pharmacist."
"Fine, I'll discuss it with him."
The pharmacist okayed the medication without the need to come and talk to me.
I just get so irked- and so does my doctor. She gets the same falderal- even after she says, "I know what I'm doing, I'm a doctor."

Doctors are not getting as much pharmaceutical information from sales reps and their companies these days as a few years ago due to all the flap about comping/conflicts of interest, etc. Pharmaceutical companies are also not doing the huge conferences they used to for the same reasons. I learned all this the hard way when I volunteered to do a physician's awareness campaign for a medical foundation. I ran into trouble almost immediately trying to get out the info. So, I'm not quite as confident in my doctor's prescription knowledge as I was a few years ago.

When I get a new prescription I phone the pharmacy ahead of filling and speak direct with the pharmacist asking any pertinent questions. No privacy issues. I get the info I need. If there's any conflict between what my doctor has told me and the pharmacist then I call my doctor.

Patients just have to be really proactive in today's medical world. No more relying on any one person.

That's the sort of thing I'm talking about. It's actually a good thing that most pharmacists ask first if you're not a regular customer and they don't have all your prescription history on file. All the dispensing transactions should be done in a private area. It really wouldn't be all that difficult to design a setup that when you're picking up your prescriptions you and the pharmacist or the clerk handing them over have to step into more private, soundproofed area.

When I flew to Mexico City in 2002, the customs official asked me if I was carrying any prescription drugs, and so I told him about the BP medication I had with him. I could see that he was visibly disappointed that I admitted this and then wanted to talk with me in Spanish, but I pretended not to be able to understand him, and then he had to see my medication with its prescription and okay it. The next time I flew (in 2005), I told them I did not have any prescription medications with me - it went much faster, and I think the customs officials were relieved.
