Ok, and to think I could "hardly wait", now I'm all alone with SP3, at least as far as this group goes.

To install AVG8, do I have to uninstall AVG7.5, or does 8 take care of that?

I installed the beta version of SP3 some time ago and have had no problems with it and I installed AVG8 when I was informed there was an update. Again, no problems. Of course this doesn't mean that on a different computer with different accessories that there will not be problems. I usually jump right in because I really don't mind reformatting and starting over. Used to do it regularly with win 98.

Thanks for the encouragement that I may have made the right decision to install SP3, on two computers, and thinking about the third.

Anyway, when starting the AVG 8 update I got a halt telling me "Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator" has a bug that requires it be updated before installing AVG 8. I don't even know why I have the program, and believe I use Microsoft something for creating CDs and DVDs...or could it be that is what Roxio is? I'm thinking uninstall Roxio, then install AVG 8. In any case I put the update of AVG on hold.

I installed AVG v8 on my Vista system without concern. It appears to be working properly with no resource drain.

I did not do an overwrite as I am a believer in clean installs unless otherwise mandated by the manufacturer. I also removed AVG AntiSpyware before installing v8.

I have XP SP3 and installed AVG 8 free the other day. I am not impressed. It is causing severe slow downs on some websites, eBay in particular.

I believe it may be the link scanner which you can disable but then your tray icon grays out and shouts at you that you aren't protected blah blah blah.

I have 4 mb of RAM so that isn't the problem.

Grisoft has a note in their FAQ about Slow with vista....
If you are using Windows Vista and your computer or Internet connection is working much slower than before installation of AVG, please try to install the Windows Update .. Windows update KB929547.

I uninstalled it and switched to Avast. My issues with web browsing are gone.

Have a friend that has a computer ( built for her a computer shop) she's running xp pro. She has never had this computer connected to the internet until this week. Now that she is, she's trying to install all the protections she needs. She gets pop-up saying something to the fact it's not a legit windows and won't let her install. I'm not sure of the real words but what does this mean?

Hmmmm. This could mean that the shop that built her computer did not install a legitimate copy of Windows XP Pro. I would call the shop and discuss this with them. Does she have an XP installation disk? She certainly will need the MS key to verify that this is a legitimate copy.

she will need to know her xp info such as the key if she does not know that she can install this free little program which will tell you that info from your pc.
She should contact the people that built the pc first and tell them this is happening and see if they can address it, she likely will have to contact microsoft with her info and see if they can help her by giving her a new key that would allow updates etc. But she definitely needs to talk to the person that put xp on her pc.

How long has she been running the (unknown) XP Pro? As she'd never been on the Internet, she must not have done any updates on the XP on her machine. There have been many XP updates lately, including SP3.

Sounds strange...

I think she's had it about four or five years and no she never did updates because she wasn't on internet. Now she can't get updates. The man that put it in has a computer store but she hasn't been able to get hold of him. It sounds like he installed the xp pro on a lot of computers, like for an office and just added hers to it. She went to belarc and it gave her a key number for xp but when she goes to type it in it won't take.
