Is anyone still using AVG 8?

And is it updating properly? Much as I've always liked AVG the recent "needs to restart" issue has gotten so bad that now its not updating at all. When I was able to access it, the last update showed Feb. 1st! Not good.

I've removed it completely and have DL (but not yet installed) Avast. If anyone is still using AVG sucessfully, maybe a clean install will be all that's needed. Otherwise, Avast it is.

I still use it and have had no major problems with it. Occasionally it will fail to automatically upgrade, but I've had no problem manually upgrading when that happens. I just checked and my last upgrade was 9:51 a.m. CST 2/15/2009

I have been getting some update errors lately. Within the last week or so, I've had messages that it didn't connect to the internet correctly and did not update. I updated manually twice, but haven't had any problem in the past few days.

I am by no means an expert on this, so until Howard chimes in I will give my 2 cents. The Kelvin rating refers to the color spectrum of the light produced. 4100K isn't horrible, and since you said that the room recieves some natural light I think that the importance of the color of the light is less. IMHO the lumens is what you should be concerned with. You are lighting 18 sq ft of space with a total of 17,600 lumens. This is 977 lumens/sq ft. The lumen rating on the bulb is measured at a very close distance to the bulb, so even if you had the bulbs near the tops of the plants the plants that are near the edges of the table would be recieveing far less light than the plants near the bulbs. What kind of plants are you growing? Taking a que from Howard I would say that you could easily have 4 bulbs and still not be giving too much light. If the room recieves a fair amount of natural light 977 lumens/sq ft might be enough. Do you have a light meter that measures in foot candles? This would be a great way to determine how much light the plants are getting. It would be helpful also to contain as much light as possible with a reflective surface such as mylar. ravencajun, I have uninstalled FF and rebooted, two times. It still happens. I found this in my advanced system information, under view the error log. ( The IP address lease then my IP numbers follow for the network card with network address then more numbers has been denied by the DHCP server then my IP address.)The DHCP server sent a DHCPNACK message) Also another one that said- (Your computer has lost the lease to it's IP address then my IP numbers on the network card with network address then more numbers.) Hate it. Had to get it last March after XP computer toasted itself. Just this past weekend I received an e-mail from HP asking if I wanted to extend the warranty - with the ability to call a tech for assistance. I took it. I called them a lot during the early days since Best Buy sold me a printer and a flash drive for factory back-up that were compatible only with Windows 7 and the key card for Word 2013 - and I hate it - could only be used once and of course it didn't work the first time. Best Buy was useless and there is no way I should have had to pay the Geek Squad to hook up a basic printer - I didn't, I called the printer manufacturer and HP. HP had already sent me a warning re making sure my computer could handle Win 8.1 - I decided to just not even try it. The tech I spoke with when I bought the extended warranty suggested I not do it. Our Internet provider does not support Win 8 or Internet 10 so that is another problem. And if your problem is anything other than the Internet connection failing they transfer you to a "specialist" and charge you. Cdns. already pay a lot for basic services. Then there is the e-mail issue. My husband's office is going to stick with Win 7 and Word 2010. I can't pay to switch back to Win 7 because I never had it. But the difference between Win 7 and Win 8 is great - same with Word 2010 and Word 2013. All I use the computer for is Word, Internet and e-mail. I don't shop or belong to Facebook etc. I use a keyboard - and HP added a few keys so I am making mistakes that I never did before despite typing 120 wpm! I helped a friend book an air ticket using her tablet - I don't want a tablet - I need a real mouse. The future is looking grim computer wise. Then there is the cell phone issue. I don't have one - did for 2 years. I don't text. I would just like to have a plain cell phone that functions only as a phone. I have the phone that I used for the 2 years but it won't accommodate a pay as you go card. I don't understand how people can watch TV on a tiny little screen while driving yet need a 60 inch screen at home. I guess I am just too old!

Not over the weekend, but I did go to Sit and Sew tonight... Picked up the Bernina from the shop on the way and looked at fabric... 80 bucks to fix the thread cutter, but it is working like a champ now. There were only 9 people at Sit and Sew tonight... I worked on an Irish Chain using my grandmother's fabric. The food was awesome (homemade pulled pork, pigs in a blanket made with honey and nuts, homemade peach cobbler... and I didn't even cook tonight, I just bought a glazed marble cake from Publix) and I was able to sign up for the quilt retreat day in October... we're going to make a Window Pane 9 Patch. It should be fun and 25 people have already signed up for it. Linda I'm glad there's good news about your heart! Jackie, what a sweet husband to want to spend the day with you and to be concerned about you not getting out enough... so considerate! I can totally relate... after working a full week, I just want to sit down in front of my machine and relax and not deal with anyone!

There haven't been any problems here on this Vista system. There was a core update yesterday that might have been directed at the reported concerns.

I don't know if the problems people have been talking about have been only with Vista or not, but I have XP and my AVG 8 has caused me no problems.

Not to confuse anyone, the core update I referred to was for AVG v8.0.234. The current full download version is 8.0.237 with an apparent release date of February 13, 2009.

Sorry, forgot to say I'm running XP.

Thank you all so much. This is very helpful. It sounds worthwhile to do a fresh install.

I switched to Avast Home Edition. It's also free. I'm very happy with it.

I still use AVG, I have for years and I like it. I did run into an issue in late November in which I was continually asked to reboot. I posted on the AVG Forum and received the following fix from Big Al 43:(and it did work although I was not wild about the tone of the forum)

"Restarting....

First check in the Advanced settings... Tools-> Advanced Settings-> Update in the 'When to update files' settings... it should be set to 'Update immediately' & 'Require confirmation from the user'...

Now this should solve your restart issue.... Problem is most probably in failure of file replacing on Windows restart. Look into folder where AVG is installed whether file "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" exists. If yes, then delete existing file "updatecomps.cfg" and rename "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" to "updatecomps.cfg". Then restart the computer to see if the issue is resolved."

Thanks, PKponder. You did well to get an actual answer there at all--terse as it was. But I'm glad it helped you. This is beyond me so I'm taking it slow and trying to understand and follow it--just in case the new DL has these same problems. At least I'll know what to do and what to look for.

I've already uninstalled AVG (yesterday) so need to DL again. Hoping it will work properly. Thanks again. Sandy

This may have already been mentioned, but you should check Program Files in Windows Explorer and delete the AVG folder before reinstalling. That would have the same effect as the 'fix'.

No I didn't know anything about that. I did find an old AVG file for 7.5 in "My Downloads" and deleted that. Is that the location of files you're talking about?

If not, would you please let me know how to access the Windows Explorer Program Files before I get into serious trouble poking around? Thanks.

OK, I found them reading another post. Nothing in there from AVG so safe to re-install. Thanks for your help.

Right click on your Start button and left click on Explore. That will open Windows Explorer. Now, on the left side look for Documents and Settings and click on the minus to fold up that list so that you can see Program Files. You can also just scroll down until you see Program Files and click the + in the box. Now, find the AVG folder, right click and delete. This will force the installation to copy the new folder with uncorrupted files instead of just seeing the folder there and skipping the copy of the new files and folders. Hope that makes sense to you.

That made perfect sense. I've got a clean install of AVG running and its nice to see all those familiar icons active again.
