AVG 8.0 An old subject

I did a search and see there is a history on AVG 8.0, but as I delayed downloading the free version until today, I'll "check in" to see if there are any new warnings/tips.

I had tried to install 8.0 many months ago and had some (now forgotten) problem and aborted. I did a post back then, but decided to remain on 7.5 as long as I could, which brings me to today.

I note that AVG does such a great job trying to sell their "full strength" pay-for version that 8.0 sounds like it isn't much. Does anyone know if 8.0 is as good or better than 7.5 in terms of what it does do?

I have not yet installed.

I'm sure Avg 8 free is as good as 7.5 I have stopped using AVG I just had update issues with it again last week (8).

and have switched to Avast.

One would have to assume version 8 to be better than version 7.5 or there would be little point in them creating the latest version. There were indeed issues at the outset but AVG seems to have gained the upper hand and the program is now stable. At some point during the install there was an option to add something, probably better to avoid that 'extra', I did.

I still keep AVG on one machine but swapped to Avira (with a daily popup during updates) and Avast for my other 2 computers.

Hi breenthumb, I still use AVG, I have for years and I like it. I did run into an issue in late November in which I was continually asked to reboot. I posted on the AVG Forum and received the following fix from Big Al 43:(and it did work although I was not wild about the tone of the forum) "Restarting.... First check in the Advanced settings... Tools-> Advanced Settings-> Update in the 'When to update files' settings... it should be set to 'Update immediately' & 'Require confirmation from the user'... Now this should solve your restart issue.... Problem is most probably in failure of file replacing on Windows restart. Look into folder where AVG is installed whether file "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" exists. If yes, then delete existing file "updatecomps.cfg" and rename "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" to "updatecomps.cfg". AVG & Spywareblaster compatability question

there is a bit of a problem but AVG announced it was going to put out an update with a fix, not sure if it has done that yet. AVG was finding a part of spywareblaster that it was alerting to as a trojan when in fact it was not, it was an actual part of spywareblaster. Other than the false positives I don't know of any other problems. I would never get rid of spywareblaster myself it does what many do not it immunizes your browsers silently, the only draw back is that you do have to remember to open it weekly and update it then enable all the new protection. here is a link to an article about the AVG spywareblaster issue Attention AVG and SpywareBlaster Users

that is a big giant major no no to have 2 fully running antivirus programs on a pc at the same time, you will eventually have problems as they both try to access the same info at the same time, you might have been real lucky so far but it is well known that is not advised. In fact each of those companies specifically say in their install directions NOT to have another active antivirus program on the pc. If they are both updating daily automatically they are both running live and resident. Good luck with that.

I avoided it too, but now that I have AVG-8 I like it even better than 7.5. It keeps itself up to date and protects even more than before. And the link scanner that people seemed to have a problem with when it first came out works well too. I find the link scanner works very much like WOT.

Thanks all, I also have a mixed environment, two machines on AVG 7.5, at the moment, and Avast on the other.

The latest trigger for me on AVG was their marketing for the paid version that has a comparison chart, in which there were at least 6 check offs (I haven't looked back) and only one was checked for the free version, "antivirus". I also believe AVG 7.5 scans inputs form the web, e.g., downloads, and the add for 8.0 seems to say it doesn't. I have removed the free AVG anti-spyware, and I see the new free version reqiures some unwanted (to me) connection to other vendors, including opening a Discover Card charge card.

I understand AVG has to make money somewhere, and I don't hold that against them, but given my past problems with 8.0 and the "oversell" of the paid version I became leery of 8.0. I think I'll load it on my "work" notebook and see how it goes. I have been protected for several years using AVG..far as I can tell.

Just looked back at the AVG site, and counted, there are 9 check offs in the comparison and the Free version has 3 of the 9 features, and it appears on this reading that it includes the web/email scanning of the past 7.5. Sorry for the confusion, I'm sure I saw something else the first time I looked...could just be my old eyes/mind.

Just opened my User Interface and it shows Antivirus, antispyware, email scanner, license, link scanner, residential shield and update manager--all active and up to date. And free.

actually AVG 8.5 is the latest version out, there were some early reports on some of the other forums I am on of problems, I know they were working on them. So if you do get AVG make sure you get the latest version
avg 8.5.278 released

I no longer use AVG just had too many problems when the went to 8. They decided to compile several tools into one with 8 rather than just leaving it the good stand alone AV product it was and that was the mistake. They had a great AV and a great product in Ewido and trying to combine it all together with some other items just conflicted with too many systems.

I now use AVAST free and love it.

you will want to read these AVG FAQ sheets prior to install to find out how to do it with out the link scanner and things that are causing problems.

As with most things pc related it might work just great for some but really cause others a very bad day, I personally just can not discount the number of people who did have some bad days. Over on BBR/DSLR on the security forum there are some excellent threads about AVG 8 you can search for.

Decided to install, and stubbed the "toe" because of a version of Roxio CD/DVD burner, not compatible with AVG 8.0, and I can't find Roxio in the list of programs loaded on my computer. I do find a file for Roxio. I think this was the problem I had last time...and gave up.

I down loaded from the AVG site and got 8.0, so I am not sure how one gets 8.5.278. I may go look at the FAQ, but I too may shift my remaining two AVG protected to computers to AVAST.

Well, if anybody is keeping score. I installed AVG 8.0 in spite of the warning about Roxio. After installation, I went through "huge" updates, about another 60 MBytes of download.

I now have AVG 8.0.237 installed. I think 8.5 is available only in the paid for version.

So, time will tell. The dialog/desktop is different and informative to my eye.

I have 8.5.238 and it was free. No problems yet, but I just installed it last week.

not to mention you would really actually benefit from reading the FAQ BEFORE you install since it instructs how to do the install, NOT after install.
