I was hoping to do the same. That does apear to be a serious notice, but according to their website the new date is 8/31/08.
Maybe they just want to be sure everyone doesn't wait till the last minute, I've noticed they do that a lot. I haven't gotten the notice yet but will probably give it a try within the next week or so. Sandy
it is still the end of December according to the AVG folks I have talked to, they will keep putting out those warnings with changing dates on them trying to get people to go ahead and change over but as far as now they are saying it is still scheduled for Dec.
Over on dsl forum several people posted their various warnings and there were around 4 different dates on the various warnings, just another one of those tactics companies use. That is why the warning you posted and the one on the website have different dates.
Just hang in there believe me they will tell you when the definitions will end.
and if you do choose to go with AVG 8 they have put out a faq on how to install it with out the extras, like link scanner that is causing problems, you should keep that handy and use that method when you change over if you decide to go with the free AVG8 install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component,
Good to know but was hoping by the time I DL there would be an uncheck to install without the link scanner. Lots of room for error typing all that in from the Start>Run. Characters not so bad but spaces are another matter for these eyes. May be too much to hope for.
I'll wait for sure. Thanks for letting us know. Sandy
Sandy the easiest thing to do is just do a copy and paste directly from the faq so you don't make any mistakes in trying to type all that.
I too thought they would come out with an update that made the add-ons optional but thus far they have not commented on that.
They have had big problems due to linkscanner and many sites were banning AVG8 users because the linkscanner was causing sites to show high visitor hits when in fact no on was going to the site it was only the linkscanner scanning the site, that was a bad deal and AVG has been dealing with that. That alone should have made them take it off the program.
I use the McAfee site advisor add on for firefox and IE which does a better job than linkscanner and does not cause any problems.
If I hear any news about end dates I will post here for Y'all.
Hi, This has probably been asked and answered already, so I apologize. Before downloading and installing AVG 8, would I uninstall the olf version first through Add/Remove or through Start>AllPrograms>AVG7.5>Uninstall AVG? Thank you. Sapphires
DA I would suspect that is because they will be ending all support for Win 98 so they would not be urging you to update since it would not be supported..
sue va if you did not do a special install as directed in the faq by AVG then you have linkscanner, you can see it at work if you go to google and do a google search it will then pop up icons on each result giving ratings. That is what is causing the slow downs for many plus in some situations it causes 100% cpu usage.
If you go to that link for the faq there are instructions on how to turn off your add on in the browser you are using.
How come I haven't had any problems with it?? I have it on three computers. I didn't even know I had linkscanner, but just checked Google and sure enough, I do. Never noticed it before. I have not had one warning from AVG and I have 8.0 138 Free. I haven't had any slow-downs or problems at all.
I'm very happy with it and if I have too, I'll pay for it. Its very unintrusive and I have them set to run a scan every day. I continue to work while it scans and I don't even realize its running. Couldn't do that with other AV programs. It would really slow everything down. This doesn't
How would AVG know I was using Win98? The original download is not O/S specific and subsequent updates are generic. In fact, the "saved" download was originally installed on the Vista system and copied to a disk.
DA I sure could not tell you that, the reason I gave that answer is because someone asked the very same thing about their window 98 system on one of the tech forums and one of the AVG folks gave that reply. So it sounds like there is some type of transmission of info?? But I am clueless.
Jane you just must be holding your mouth right or something LOL keep doing it since you are one of the lucky ones that has had no problems thus far. Who knows why it works fine for one and totally fubar for the next. But then every pc is different as is every user.
What is link scanner, and how do I know if I have it. Why would I need to remove it???? I have the free AVG and have no problems at all...whats this about??
in my answer to Sue above quote: sue va if you did not do a special install as directed in the faq by AVG then you have linkscanner, you can see it at work if you go to google and do a google search it will then pop up icons on each result giving ratings. I have been told that now when you do the install of AVG 8 if you select the custom option that there are options to NOT install certain parts like the link scanner and that horrible toolbar. So you might look at that, I don't know for sure, that info was posted on one of the tech forums. I believe also that now there is an option to uncheck if you want that toolbar, definitely look at what comes up on your screen and if you have any options for extras like that pay attention to uncheck what you do NOT want if it is checked by default.
I truly hate when they have something extra thrown in on the install pages that is checked by default. It is just sneaky business, if they want to try to push something at least have the decency to NOT have it checked in default. There is a list being compiled of software that is now trying to sneak stuff in on you, good to look at and know in advance. Installers Hall of Shame (Unwanted add-on)
Hmm...I'm just now seeing this. I upgraded to AVG8 awhile back, but can't remember exactly when. I'd wondered why I got those pop-up icons when doing a Google search. Is there a way to remove the link scanner once it's been downloaded?
here ya go Jane you can find this info on that avg faq I posted right above your post.
1257: What is the AVG Security Toolbar?
The AVG Toolbar is a new tool which works together with the AVG LinkScanner and checks search results of the supported Internet search engines (Yahoo!, Google, MSN). If you select to install the toolbar during the installation of AVG 8.0 Free Edition, it will be added into your Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox.
The AVG Toolbar can be used to control the AVG LinkScanner and to adjust its behavior, and to update your AVG in case new updates are available.
If you decide that you do not wish to use the toolbar, you can either skip its installation during the AVG installation process, or disable it manually in your Internet browser:
* Internet Explorer - use the mouse right-click on the toolbar and check-off the AVGTOOLBAR option in the list. * Mozilla Firefox - Tools menu -> Add-ons. Find the AVG Toolbar here and click on the Disable button.
Disabling or uninstalling the AVG Toolbar has no negative effect on the level of security provided by AVG Free Edition. The only consequence of missing toolbar is an absence of some of the options, and less verbose information about the threats found by the AVG LinkScanner. The main settings of the LinkScanner component can be still configured in AVG Free User Interface.
Note: AVG Toolbar contains also a Yahoo! search box, which is an integral part of the toolbar and can not be removed separately.
You don't have to remove Link Scanner. You can just disable it. Open the interface and double click on the appearing Link Scanner icon. In the appearing window uncheck the appropriate box. That does it.
