actually AVG 8.5 is the latest version out, there were some early reports on some of the other forums I am on of problems, I know they were working on them. So if you do get AVG make sure you get the latest version avg 8.5.278 released I no longer use AVG just had too many problems when the went to 8. They decided to compile several tools into one with 8 rather than just leaving it the good stand alone AV product it was and that was the mistake. They had a great AV and a great product in Ewido and trying to combine it all together with some other items just conflicted with too many systems. I now use AVAST free and love it. you will want to read these AVG FAQ sheets prior to install to find out how to do it with out the link scanner and things that are causing problems. FAQ As with most things pc related it might work just great for some but really cause others a very bad day, I personally just can not discount the number of people who did have some bad days. BT just make sure that staying where you are is not leaving you with out protection, if they are stopping the updates for the version you have you will be with out protection also. What you can do is go download the new version of AVG and save it to your pc but do not install it yet, disconnect from the internet, go to add remove programs and remove the old version then go install the new version, reboot the pc, connecting to the internet at reboot, then go get the updates for the new version by telling it to check for updates. Another alternative is once you have downloaded the new version to the pc immediately copy that to a cd/dvd or flash drive, so you have a back up copy, then go ahead and try the install of the new one with out removing the old one it may go smoothly for you and then you would be done, but if it did not, then just disconnect from the internet, go to add remove and remove all versions it shows of AVG, reboot (just to make sure) then pop in the backup you made of the new version and load it and install. NO need to go back on the internet while unprotected. I do that with my programs anyway, I make a back up copy just in case I should need them and not have to go back online to get them. And I agree any time I add or remove or make changes I do create a new restore point labeled so I know exactly where to go back to should I need to.

also you can download the free belarc advisor which will scan your pc and give you an excellent list of everything that is on your pc including the memory, the type you have installed how many slots you have on the pc and if you have any open slots etc, it is something I advise everyone to do and keep a print out of the list in case they ever need it when the pc is not working. Belarc Advisor you can use the crucial page also but you do not have to buy from them. I buy my memory from newegg.com I find their prices are excellent, usually go with kingston brand. Replacing or adding RAM is easy to do, there are some great guides online with pictures and also if you go to youtube and search for installing ram you will find video tutorials. Belarc will also tell you what kind of hard drive connections you have so you would know what you need to buy if you were to replace it. Installing Desktop Memory Modules

You might visit Softpedia and try the download for microsoft security essentials (freeWare). Its Beta but looks like out of 75,000 users on the beta program, way fewer than half percent actually have problems and most are thrilled with it. Well except for one guy that thinks its too simple.
