You cannot have two antivirus programs running at the same time. You should have uninstalled AVG before installing Avast

you must disable your AVG immediately, you can not have 2 resident AV programs running real time together, you can have more than one if one is disabled and not run real time, but that is not recommended. It is always advised to totally remove one prior to install of another. The reason why is both try to use the same files at the same time which will cause some conflicts and problems.

In other words,
I can not turn AVG off without having to uninstall it.

Urlee, I'd try a shutdown of AVG without uninstalling.

Its only 3-4 clicks to uninstall the AVG. You can always reinstall it.
Anyway if you go that route you'll have to re-download the updates which might take 3-4 tries to get em all depending on which version/build you re-install.

I recall you can disable AVG in Services. Right click my Comp > Manage > Services. At least in XP. Vista must be about the same.

In Services, E-mail scanner and Watchdog is the only thing there for AVG. I am using Win XPPro.

Well I'm guessing if you disable both it will disable all of AVG. Right clik each service > properties > dependencies and it will cough up what functions depend on that service. It therefore follows as the night the day.... :-) if you disable that service it disables the dependent functions.

You won't lose anything by trying - if it doesn't produce the desired effect then just restart the service.

The dependencies take a few seconds to pop up so be patient.
Right click the service and it coughs up a choice of stopping or restarting to the left. Or in the properties dialog you can find a dropdown menu with automatic, manual or disabled. Chose disabled. Some services can be done the first way others the latter.

Like 'genes' and 'raven' said, you should not have more than one antivirus program running at the same time.
If you plan on keeping Avast I would uninstall AVG either by using 'Programs/AVG/AVG uninstall' or 'Control Panel'.

To answer your question:
To disable AVG, right click on the AVG icon in the system tray (by the clock), and click on 'Quit AVG Control Center', that will shut down AVG. It will start up again however, if you should reboot your computer. To stop AVG from restarting on reboot go to the MS Config Utility, click 'Start', click 'Run', type in (msconfig) without the quotes and click 'OK'.
In the 'System configuration utility' select the 'Startup' tab and deselect (uncheck) the box by 'avgcc' (avgcc.exe/startup). You will be asked to restart your computer, select 'Restart'. After your computer restarts you will get a 'nag' notification box that you have made changes to the Configuration Utility. 'Check' the box 'Do not show me this message again' and click ok.
To have AVG start again with Windows go back into the Config Utility, recheck 'avgcc'. You will receive the same prompts again.

I am well aware of the fact that you should not have two running at the same time but I kept AVG incase I had trouble or couldn't install Avast.
Then I was faced with the problem of not being able to disable AVG.
Then I wondered if I did uninstall AVG, the stuff I have in the vault, do they get deleted or scattered back into my system? If I click on empty, does that delete them all?

Open AVG > help topics > AVG Virus Vault > + > System Menu. It will explain all your options.
Othern that, open the vault > Action (in the top tool bar) > Empty vault > "Do you Really Want to Empty the Vault?" > yes.

Actually, I am running 8.0 and heard a newer one is out like 8.5?
So I could uninstall and do the 8.5 if I don't like Avast.
Very confused now on which is the better from what I read previously. Sounded like all were turning to Avast and uninstalling AVG. That is why I am where I am now.

I was sitting on pins & needles trying to make up my mind.

I hope I made the right choice on doing so..

Avast is not hard to use. Don't have your sound turned up too loudly or the voice announcing that it has updated may startle you. LOL

if you do not like how that interface looks you can change it to the simple user interface, right click on the avast icon in the systray, click program settings from the context menu and the avast settings dialog box appears. In the "Common" settings uncheck the enable skins for simple user interface. Next time avast starts you will have the simple user interface.

On the avast site where you downloaded it from over on the left there are links to some good tutorials on how to use and set up Avast also how to do the registration.

I am embarassed to tell you that THAT is the MAIN reason I chose to keep Avast! I got a thrill when that voice came with that update popup.
