Change in Antivirus program

Back story:

I got the message "System fan has failed." Grandson came and did some clean up and it was working fine.

This past Monday morning when I booted up, I got the Black screen and the pc was "dead." No connection at all. This time I called a PC service guy who came and checked over everything, noticing first that there was no dust buildup. He thought there might have been a sudden surge during the night. He did a lot of checking out different things.

He found that AVG had that "you are not fully protected" message. He uninstalled AVG, and installed Avast. He got the "you are not yet registered" message, and there was no way to register it.

He thought Zone Alarm was blocking AVG and Avast, so he took ZA off. He said they often "don't play well together."

Next he installed Clam Win and Clam Sentinel, (open source) which I had never heard of.

I still have SUPERAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, and SpywareBlaster

So that is what I have now. So far, so good.

What do you all think about this? And why could Avast not be registered?

HP Media Center XP SP3 FF default browser,

TIA.

Sue
