avast install error

I'm trying to install Avast on my new Vista Home Premium 64-bit desktop. The install fails and I get the following message: Setup finished. There was an error while completing the setup process. The setup log reveals the following:

Please run the avast uninstall-utility in the link below. Reboot the computer. Try to reinstall Avast again.

Tonight I have been trying to update Avast on an XP computer that hasn't been used for several months.

All previous updates have always worked perfectly on this machine but tonight's attempts repeatedly failed with various different errors despite four uninstalls and cleanups.

I eventually gave up and reluctantly switched back to AVG because I needed to have this computer online tonight.

Possibly there is a temporary problem with Avast - I will try again next time I use this computer.

All went well here soon after the post. Just like grandms said, I was "too early" posting this incident as by the time you all got on the computer, it was corrected.

urlee, Like 'genes' and 'raven' said, you should not have more than one antivirus program running at the same time. If you plan on keeping Avast I would uninstall AVG either by using 'Programs/AVG/AVG uninstall' or 'Control Panel'. To answer your question: To disable AVG, right click on the AVG icon in the system tray (by the clock), and click on 'Quit AVG Control Center', that will shut down AVG. It will start up again however, if you should reboot your computer. To stop AVG from restarting on reboot go to the MS Config Utility, click 'Start', click 'Run', type in (msconfig) without the quotes and click 'OK'. In the 'System configuration utility' select the 'Startup' tab and deselect (uncheck) the box by 'avgcc' (avgcc.exe/startup). You will be asked to restart your computer, select 'Restart'. After your computer restarts you will get a 'nag' notification box that you have made changes to the Configuration Utility. 'Check' the box 'Do not show me this message again' and click ok. To have AVG start again with Windows go back into the Config Utility, recheck 'avgcc'. You will receive the same prompts again. Witz

They fixed the seam, or at least made it better. It is still sloppy in some places, but I think I can fix that myself. One other issue that I'm trying to decide if I want to make a big deal about it is the overhang. We asked for a 1" overhang because we have inset cabinets. However, there is a variance of between 7/8" in some places and 1-1/2" in others (and everything in between). In fact, on one cabinet face (an angled cabinet with an ~16" face) it goes from 1" to 1-1/2", which means the counter angle obviously doesn't mirror the cabinet face angle). I asked the installer about it and he said variations are normal--the important thing is to have straight cuts without any waive. I'm not sure I buy this. When he came to template, he didn't actually make a template. He just measured the cabinets with his tape and jotted them down in a notebook. (It seems from my research that some fabricators actually make a template and other just take measurements like mine did.) I'm not trying to be too much of a squeaky wheel, but 5/8" variation for a 1" overhang seems like a lot, like >50% variation from what we asked for.

I don't see a photo. So to start with I'll ask was the tub installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions? Most instructions include how the tub should be secured, and how the tub flange should relate to the tile backer board hung on the walls. With that out of the way... My "blind" response? If the cement board is proud of the tub flange, no worries. The bottom course of wall tile will cover the tub flange. Typically the bottom course of wall tile will be held above the tub deck by the with of a grout line, and that gap will later be filled with a bead of caulk. Often times the caulk can be color- and texture-matched to the grout. If the tub flange is proud of the cement board, yes, that can be an issue. If it just gets tiled over, the protruding flange can cause the bottom course of wall tile to kick out of plane with the tile above. It'll skew the tiles themselves plus it'll skew the vertical linearity of the tile in the wall-to-wall corners. If there is any movement in the tub, from loading with water, from bathers, any movement in the tub can cause friction squeaks because of differential movement with the tile being in contact with the flange. If the tub installation is fine, the existing cement board can be removed. 1/4" rips (or whatever thickness is needed) from a 2x4 can be fastened to the edge of each stud to pack out the framing, then the cement board can be reinstalled over the packed out studs so the cement board properly clears the tub flange. If the tub does not have to be reset, that is my preferred solution. An alternative would be to thinset and screw a second layer of cement board over the existing cement board. The thinset is there to fill any voids between the two layer to prevent differential movement. The long screws are what will fasten the new cement board to the studs. Regardless, make sure whatever waterproofing that is to be used on the walls is reconsidered and adjusted if required.

I have AVAST on all of my windows machines and have had no problems at all recently with any updates, they have updated and announced like clockwork. My log in event viewer shows it is on schedule.

Char are you following the install guide which is in pdf form on the left on the AVAST install page?

what antivirus program did you have on the pc prior to trying to install AVAST? which removal process did you use to remove the old AV program? It is most often the fault of improper removal of the old AV which causes the new AV to fail proper install.
You should use the correct removal tool created by the AV company for removal of their product not just use add remove programs.

Thanks, Zep and Raven. I've used Avast on my old XP for over a year without any problems. I also installed it on my sister's laptop OK... This is a brand new custom build Vista system with the i7 intel processor. I'm just setting it up and am using my old desktop to go online for general information.

I was nervous about going online with my new pc to download Avast from its site, but that's what I did. I'll check the uninstall link and reread the install guide to make sure I'm not overlooking anything. Thanks again.

I saved the uninstall tool to a flash drive. I booted my Vista and am now holding in safe mode... I don't know which version of Avast to uninstall! (This is embarrassing!!!)

The only one that seems likely is avast! 4 Home/Professional. The "Professional" is causing me to hesitate. Another choice is avast! Windows Home Server Edition...

Thanks, Cat, but I'm trying to uninstall avast! free. However, it's not listed as such in the uninstall program. There are 9 choices; I've listed the two which use the word "home".

Yes, that is the utility, but it doesn't list "avast! free" in the list of versions to select when it's run! :)

I used the uninstall utility to remove Avast. Upon reinstalling, however, I got the same error.

Is there another good antivirus you would recommend? Has AVG worked out its kinks?

abreeze has there been any other antivirus on that pc at all prior to your trying to install AVAST? did it come pre loaded with anything?
It really sounds like it is having a conflict and that happens most often with remnants of a prior AV on the pc.
AVIRA is a good product, it does have a nag screen but there is a way to stop that if you can do a little googling for it.

You can always go to the AVAST user forums and tell them your problem they may know exactly what is causing it.

What Anti Virus was originally installed on your machine?

There was no other antivirus on it. In fact the only software programs I've installed are Ashampoo, Pinnacle and Corel Video Studios. It came built with the OS, Nero 8, and a lightscribe program.

I didn't install Avira yet...

you might try doing your install while in safe mode, in case it is something that is loading that is causing a conflict.

I never thought of that, Raven, and was hoping that would work. I even searched my files to make sure all traces of Avast were gone. However, the install gave me the same error... I just now installed Avira and am finally online with my new pc.

it would be great if you could go to the Avast forums and let them know this was happening they always like to know when there are problems and they may have some idea why it was but it may be something they don't know about yet.

I hope you have good luck with Avira it is a good product.
