Avast Install Fails

I am trying to install Avast on a HP Laptop running Vista. After I click Finish, Avast does not start. When I go to the Start Bar and try to manually start it, it got an error saying that "the side-by-side" configuration is incorrect. I have manually removed Avast using the Control Panel and executed Avast's Uninstall Utility. The error then refers to some application event log for details.... I have no idea what it is either.

what antivirus did you have on that laptop before AVAST and how did you try to remove it? Did you use the designated removal tool for that particular antivirus? If not often times there are pieces that linger and cause install problems with the new AV.

Windows Defender is the only thing that the laptop had originally. I then added Avast. I was now trying to get the new version of Avast by deleting the old one via the Control Panel and installing the new one by following the links in their website.

I am guessing you have a pop up blocker on that is blocking the download box from appearing if you clicked on those links I provided and still could not get it. Yes any program you install will have to make changes to your computer how else would it install, it has to make changes to the registry and add itself into the system. Just removing Norton from add remove is not sufficient you need to follow the directions I provided and the link to the removal tool for Norton. Norton is extremely intrusive and even using the removal tool will not get it all. How are you getting the question for Avast to make changes if you are saying it did not even download? Tell us exactly what is happening when you go to the download links provided. Do you see a blue box appear with the .exe and the save dialog? If not what do you see what is happening? Did the pdf for install instructions help?

If you've checked the things that could have an indirect effect by choking resources - ie, you don't have too many windows open at the same time, you've cleared cache and history in the browser, your hard drive isn't near capacity and has been recently cleaned up and defragged, then you may be stuck. An old version installation of something like an antivirus program is likely to be auto-updated with the periodic check for threat profiles, which should happen no less than weekly. Meaning, you're fighting a losing battle. The old version will likely get replaced with the first update. If you can't find happiness with Avast, it may be time for you to try a different security program. A recent thread in this forum had a link to an article containing independent ratings. Good luck.

ok then try using the AVAST removal tool then try to do a fresh install of the new version. Go to this link on Corrine's blog she has listed all of the various links to the removal tools and some helpful instructions be sure you get the one for AVAST.

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. please see the application event log for more detail.

Is that a 64bit Vista installation? That could be a tricky one to fix.

Let us know how you go with this, using the avast uninstaller as recommended above.

The link above provides an Avast Website link where I already have been. I downloaded the avast utility program some time ago from there, ran the utility and still could not uninstall. Did you mean for me to try it again anyways?

Here is the avast uninstall utility, click the link below when the window opens choose saveand save it to the Desktop, go look for it and double click it.

These are the instructions from Avast:

How to uninstall Avast software using aswClear:
1. Download aswClear5.exe on your desktop
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
5. Click REMOVE
6. Restart your computer
Try it one more time, that is install avast see if works. If it fails again, I'd consider installing Microsoft Security Essentials. There's a long somewhat complicated fix for the side by side error and could have to do with 64Bit. I say the heck with that. Let us know we can get a link for you.

Booting to safe Mode

Here's How:
1. If the system is already turned off, power it on.
2. If the system is already on, shutdown the system normally, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
3. Begin tapping the F8 key every few seconds as the system boots up until the screen offering the Safe Mode option appears.
4. Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
5. The system will now boot into Safe Mode.
