OK! Good vibes on the way to Jo's daughter. What a woman. She deserves it just based on her tenacity. My kids couldn't have punched their way out of a paper bag at age 13.

More good vibes coming from here, Jo. Ashley was much like that, decided what she wanted and did whatever necessary to accomplish it. You have to admire that.

Good luck to your girl, jojoco! One of my nephews is in a small boarding school in NH - his Junior year. We saw him last month and he has grown up so much while there - quite the young man. If this is what she wants, go for it!

Thanks for all the good wishes. One school posts online decisions at midnight, so I am staying up. Here is a picture of my dd taken last summer. She hates it, but I think it is a keeper. Only difference is now she has braces.

We heard from one, in PA. She got in, but no mention in the online acceptance letter about scholarships or financial aid. Celebrations will have to wait until we know if we can swing it.

Jo, I've got my fingers crossed today for great news!

Our son, at 16, was chosen our State's Student Ambassador to the USSR the year of Yeltsin's coup (1991). He was gone for an entire summer & out of contact except for Red Cross emergency messages. He wrote frequently but was home by the time we received his mail. We'd watch the evening news about food shortages, violence, & general chaos & were so worried. It was a trip of a lifetime for him.

Then, we sent him to study in Puerto Rico for a semester. He "camped out" in the mangroves & was again out of contact most of the time.

So, I can really relate to being nervous about letting her go. She's obviously a very "together" young woman. She'll be fine & what an opportunity. So many times it's not what you know but who you know. Attending one of those prep schools & the contacts she makes will be as important, or more so, than the education!

two yesses at two schools, but only if we cough up an additional $30K. Yup, they love her enough to admit her, but they offered roughly 13K for places that cost 43K per year. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for the offers, I just wish it was more realistic. But, at the end of the day, she is at a great school here in our home town.
And yes, I know, college is cheaper.

Jo, undoubtedly this is part of the problem. As you noted in your original post endowment funds have been plummeted. There's no reason to believe the prep schools haven't suffered the same loses as universities. This article was on my Comcast homepage this morning...

I wonder how Phillip Exeter's doing? PE is a large part of the economy for that part of NH. My DS bought his first home about 1/2 mile from campus in downtown Exeter. Seemed like everybody in town was in some way connected to the school.

Jo, here's hoping the funding will come through for your daughter. My nephew, who hoped to be Ivy bound, is still waiting for word on funding to see if he can attend his dream school. He's looking at it pragmatically, hoping for the best news, but not willing to saddle himself/family with a mountain of debt if the money isn't available.

I keep telling my sister that just having gone through the process and being accepted has given him experience and confidence that money can't buy. Same goes for your daughter.

My DS was fortunate to have attended prep school. It was his choice, based on opportunities there for advanced studies in subjects that he was passionate about. But it was a real tug leaving friends, hometown teams, activities, etc. It was a good choice for him, but what was really sweet was that one of his best friends, who graduated from our town's public school, ended up as one of his Harvard roommates a few years later.

My point is, that other boy and DS ended up at the same place. Believe me, I know the advantages that prep schools can offer. But I truly believe, and have witnessed firsthand, that kids who are passionate, capable and motivated (like your DD!) will succeed regardless of whether or not they have a prep school background.
