I disabled the firewall. I also found a previous thread that described essentially the same problem. However, it was finally solved by installing Vista updates. Right now, I have no way of getting on-line. I also ran a Network diagnostic that says: "This computer has the following default gateway entry 0.0.0.0" "There is no default gateway entry" "Redirecting user to support call" Is there anyway to get updates without being connected? It does not seem to be a network adapter issue either, as both wireless and direct connection are problematic. The next step to see if a program typically Anti Virus is causing issue. So lets boot the computer to safe mode with Networking and see if you can connect that way, lets just concentrate using a direct connection. Restart the computer, keep tapping the F8 Key, the computer will boot to the advanced boot options menu black screen with white letter. From the list presented to you, use the arrow key to select Safe Mode With Networking once selected hit enter on the keyboard. Now try to connect to only Google.com. Let us know if you can connect that way. Do not surf the internet in this mode. Please be sure to try another browser too maybe before doing all this above in case this is a silly internet explorer issue.. Joe

I assume that I will have to change my remote id from Comcast back to the remote that originally came with my TV. Are we talking about the remote control for the television? If so, it is the remote that's programmed to work with the TV, not the other way around. Although some "universal" remotes can be iffy with advanced features, so you may be best using the original remote control for the TV. If the TV is Internet enabled and you want to use a wireless connection, then the SSID and password (if security is enabled) must match that of the new router. Of course, you could change the SSID and password of the new router to match the old router. Also I have a second tv upstairs that I would want to also use this wireless connection. Would I just have to buy a second modem/router and use the same software that I would get from AT&T. No. One of the functions of the router is to distribute the Internet connection to computers and devices in your home via wired and/or wireless connections. Again the upstairs TV would need to be programmed to the correct SSID and password. Also I have a second computer about a mile away that I would want to hook up to this same wireless connection also. Again I assume I would just need another modem/router and use the same software once again. That would be problematic. WiFi just doesn't have that kind of range nor could you run a mile long Ethernet cable. You'd likely need a second service from AT&T. I don't know about Earthlink. Most ISP's give you a free email account (or in some cases, multiple accounts) with service. You will need to ask Earthlink what happens to your email account if you discontinue their service. They may allow you to keep the email account active for a small monthly fee. AT&T will give you a free email account with their service as well. You may wish to just migrate or use one of the free services like Gmail or Hotmail and not be tied to the ISP.

Since you're daughter can connect to other networks, it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem with her laptop. And since hubby's laptop works, it doesn't appear to be a problem with the router (or wireless access point). She needs to be using the correct SSID and password. Remember that passwords are case sensitive. PASSWORD is not the same as password. I might also suggest temporarily disabling any security on the router and seeing if she can connect. If so, re-enable the security and go from there.
