what does this mean...in Vista 'computer'

I have a brand new Gateway laptop that I'm still getting up to par. I noticed when I open "computer" in Vista, the Recovery(D) area says:

5.20 GB free of 11.0 GB. The picture bar/graph is just more than 1/2 colored in blue, like it's 1/2+ full. Anyone know what this means?

I would think it is a partition on your harddrive where the Vista operating system is stored

Forgot to mention, if your system didnt come with any restore DVD's, most manufacturers now make it possible to create your own. There should be instructions in the User Manual.

Does the little clock at bottom right of screen keep time and date OK ? Im just guessing that the little coin battery that keeps track of the cmos/bios settings for the hardware has failed.. that's why you see I/O, hard drive, and why the keypress didn't work.... from what you have said. Needs that motherboards $2 big watch coin battery replaced maybe.. That battery also keeps your time and date correct. Before doing anything be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose including your contact list for emails. Make a note of installed programs and find the needed CD/DVD for each. I think you will have to do a fresh install of Vista, not positive but I doubt they included the ability to move backwards. The advantage would be that everything is squeaky clean. Use the Vista CD/s you have but when it requires the 25 digit authentication code use the one fixed to the computer now. If you go with a fresh install you should allow the computer to format the drive, select NTFS to make the best use of the hard drive. You should go to the Dell site, download and save all the drivers you will need before proceeding. Save these on a thumb drive or CD if the DVD player problem has been addressed. DVD player is very easy to install. simply shut down and either switch off at the rear if provided or remove the power cord. Remove both sides, remove 2 screws each side of DVD player, remove wide (2 inch) ribbon cable, flat power cable and skiiny sound wire. Slide defective DVD player out then reverse the procedure to install the new DVD player. done.

Update: 1. Original router Dl-524 on XP was dying, then died. 2. XP machine now functioning as wireless with new router (D-Link WBR-2310 -- it was cheap because store running a special!). Set it up during 2-hour phone call to ISP (Verizon) and done manually -- he wanted to bypass the CD w/router even though the package said "use CD first." 3. Used Recovery Partition pre-installed on Vista machine. But when restart, still same 3 messages as before: a. apsInitialize b. apsGetInterfaceCount c. WLAN Monitor stopped 4. Google searches with the above (a, b, & c) gathered pages and pages of hits, some helpful some not. Many lead to dead-end in forums closed to outsiders -- a subscribe-here type. But all summaries were related to errors appearing after person installed, or attempted to install, a D-Link router Bottom line: Because using the Recovery Partition didn't get rid of the error messages, I wonder if I need to swap existing Vista for different Vista (but same model). I'm going to stop by store on way home from office to ask them. I hope original salesman is there as he is knowledgeable, the store guru, and has helped me before. Any thoughts?

Amity - I love DIP and now DIS (I am using the newest, and last, version - Digital Image Suite 2006-Anniversary Edition) I started using it way back in the "Picture It" days. I also have Photoshop Elements 5.0 - and find that DIS 2006 can do everything that PSe does - so MUCH easier though! I have one friend that is using DIS2006 Anniversary Edition with VISTA. eBay has a few copies of DIS2006 Anniversary available for a great price. If you are interested - I would get one ASAP - there used to be a ton listed and now just a few! I am attaching a link to a Microsoft patch. Some users experienced problems, and this patch (if needed) fixes that. I don't know if the "Anniversary Edition" needs it. They released DIS2006, then released DIS 2006 Anniversary Edition later - basically the same, but DIS2006 Anniversary appears to be Vista compatible. I have a few links of user forums (mostly dealing with digital scrapbooking) and tutorials for DIP/DIS. If you are interested in them, I can post the links. I went from using DIP/DIS for simple fixes, to doing some REALLY awesome photo editing. Simple to learn, simple to remember :0) Using edge finder tool to copy raspberries, then "Gaussian Blur" on image - then pasted unblurred raspberries back in, extending over the frame. Usually most drives on PC's nowadays come partitioned into two sections. One partition is storing your whole operating system as it was when it was purchased (maybe even a few programs as well). This if for when you want to wipe your machine and it reloads itself from that partition (of course that partition is not wiped). The other partition has your "working" operating system (otherwise the operating system that your computer is using when you boot up your computer). That same "working" partition is where you would store your files, and load any programs that you are using. The area used for storage is shown in your computer info. Hope this helps.

Agree I would bet it is your back up or restore partition, they used to give discs with each pc with restore options, now they just partition the disc and put it all there on the hard drive. I highly suggest you make a copy of that partition and save it to disc should you need it from that type of media, usually they have software on the pc which allows you to do that or some provide info on how to order the actual restore discs from them for little or shipping fees.
Just leave that partition alone, don't mess with it, but do make sure it is included in all your scans.
Check your info from the manufacturer on how to copy that restore partition.
