I dont have vista so I'm dumb with its configurations. But I am curious what that vista computer uses for the ethernet card or wireless adapter that you are trying to configure to connect to that dlink wireless router ?

Sorry, I know just enough about computers to follow (most) directions. So, I can't answer your question.

But whatever the case, the D-Link wireless requires an ethernet card in machine #1. It's still there. It was functioning fine until the old #2 died.

According to directions with the D-Link, the receiving unit should be plugged into a USB port.

In any event, the wireless connection was functioning well for the first 8 to 10 hours after I set up the new computer. So I'm assuming that whatever I need is already in the new tower.

I may be wrong, but from what I've read, the USB wireless connections can be problematic. The other types are preferable.

It has always worked well between two puters, both with XP.

But now I'm trying to set up the XP to send to the Vista. So, I wonder if that's the problem.

I hesitate to move the router to the Vista machine then lose all connection. (Right now, the XP is my only way to the internet.)

Or perhaps I should set up each computer with its own router? I think that my FIOS connection might allow that. (The back panel has a place to plug in an ethernet cable.)

What do you, or anyone else, think?

Each computer should have its own direct to the router connection - be it by wire or wireless. The router talks to the modem and accesses the internet for any computer connected to it. It can actually handle about 250 computers connected to it.

I suspect you are trying to set up 'Internet Connection Sharing' which I seriously doubt is what you want.

Update:

1. Original router Dl-524 on XP was dying, then died.

2. XP machine now functioning as wireless with new router (D-Link WBR-2310 -- it was cheap because store running a special!). Set it up during 2-hour phone call to ISP (Verizon) and done manually -- he wanted to bypass the CD w/router even though the package said "use CD first."

3. Used Recovery Partition pre-installed on Vista machine. But when restart, still same 3 messages as before:
a. apsInitialize
b. apsGetInterfaceCount
c. WLAN Monitor stopped

4. Google searches with the above (a, b, & c) gathered pages and pages of hits, some helpful some not. Many lead to dead-end in forums closed to outsiders -- a subscribe-here type.
But all summaries were related to errors appearing after person installed, or attempted to install, a D-Link router

Bottom line: Because using the Recovery Partition didn't get rid of the error messages, I wonder if I need to swap existing Vista for different Vista (but same model).

I'm going to stop by store on way home from office to ask them. I hope original salesman is there as he is knowledgeable, the store guru, and has helped me before.

Any thoughts?

The first paragraph of your response was one of those duh-moments, one I had after I clicked submit.

I wonder if that's the problem, in part because I have two connections listed. One is default with NVIDIA which has a red X on it and states "cable is unplugged."
The other connection I set up with the router; this connection is viable between the XP and the Vista, but is broken between the Vista and the internet.

The ISP said to ignore the default connection, and to select the other. But an intermittent error message is "can't connect; cable is unplugged."

So, if that's the default connection, what if I disable it?
Or should I delete it?
(I'm at the office now so can't check the options available on the Vista.)

After numerous hours on the phone with 5 different ISP techs, one was sent to the house to verify wiring (it's intact).

After 4 hours with the tech who came to the house, I'm advised to forget the wireless connection, then have hard-wired connection installed.

4hr in home tech ... and he couldn't fix ya up. Sounds like interference of the wifi Signal ? Steel Walls ?

Nope. The machines are currently side-by-side. I thought that was better than running upstairs each time I had to check something.

Beyond that, the previous set up (before the one XP died), with the same access point (with the router that died), worked fine between the upstairs (wireless) and downstairs (wired) computers.

We could get each machine, individually, online if wired. But the wireless setup didn't work, even though all indications were that it was functioning. (The computers talked to each other but the wireless could never get online.)

In case anyone wants to know, I strongly suspect the OLD model Dl-122 access point can't/doesn't work with the new router. (I found on D-Link site that it's no longer supported.)

Bottom line: I'll have a cable installed so that both machines are wired.
