You need to enter the router and probably want to change the default SSiD to a unique name - so you recognise which wireless connection is yours should your neighbor down the street have one named dlink too.

Then you want to initially,,, without pushing any confirmation buttons,,,, set it to WPA or WPA2 and probably if it aks PSK (pre shared key) and then either type in a security key or passphrase if it says anything about passphrase.

If it wants a key it should spell out how many numbers and letters. And I forget but it will say use A through F and 1 through 7 and/or any combination of those. As soon as you do that key or passphrase, before you press the OK do it button,,, you best copy that key or passphrase and paste it onto notepad ..... because as soon as you press ok youre disconnected.
Then windows pos a window asking for the security key or passphrase.

How do you enter the router? I can't find it on the computer. I do have a name for it besides dlink but do not have it password protected and now do not know how to do that. I know I need really detailed instructions and I appreciate your help.

Wow, I was going to post the same question. At home I don't think my signal is protected as my neighbor told me she see's my wireless. I don't see it, I see 4 different Linksys listed (no names). I guess the directions would be the same for me as for Shipwrecked?

Jane, click one of those links see if it takes you to your router. You need to visit linksyn and read your user manual.

Sometimes you need to look on the bottom of isp's modem/router/wifi for their default login/password and sometimes a default security key.

the linksys usually uses the one that ends in 1.1

What users manual? I don't know what ever happened to it. Someone installed it a few years ago and I don't remember them ever leaving anything. I think it was during the Verison nightmare when I switched to Cable and the guy had one on the truck. I know I didn't buy it.

Often the users manual is not a paper manual but a file or website that you go to to read or download and print. Most sites have them in pdf form. I always go to the site for my product and download the pdf and print it so I have a paper copy for my files and I create a new folder on my pc (under my documents) just for that product to keep all the pertinent info in. I have gotten to the point if I do not have it all in one nice place I can never find it LOL

Jane, one of the Linksys that you see is probably yours - thats why its a good idea to change the ssid name - and if you dont have your wifi secured you're neighbors may already be using it and get mad when you cut them off.

Good! I could care less. Let them get their own setup. I'll fool with it this weekend, along with the scan on the other computer.
