New laptop not linking to wireless

Hello - need help if anyone has any suggestions. I finally purchased a new computer for myself - it is a Lenovo G550. I have been using an old Emachines desktop. My step-daughter has a lenovo laptop she purchased about 3 years ago. We have internet service from Comcast with their Motorolla modem. Comcast set my desktop up initially. Then when my step-daughter bought her laptop we purchased a D-link wireless router and just hooked it up as instructed at the computer store. No problems. I bring my new laptop home and was told at the computer store that if I wanted the most security while working wireless I should initially hard wire the laptop to the internet connection and go to either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and follow some steps they gave me to set up wpa2-AES. All that is sort of beside the point because when I brought the computer home I can't even get it to connect to the internet. I've plugged and unplugged with all the different combinations I can think of now for 3 days. And, every time I try to connect to the internet it somehow causes the desktop to disconnect. I then had my nephew take it to his house where he also has Comcast service and the computer connected both to wireless and hard wired fine. So at that point we thought it was my router, and unhooked his syslink router and brought to my house, but still it wouldn't work. Then we figure it is something to do with comcast - BUT - the problem with this idea is that my old desktop and my daughters laptop had been working fine. I had her connect with her laptop while the new laptop was turned off and both her laptop and my desktop work fine - until I turn on the new laptop and then the old laptop and desktop lose connection. Tried having her laptop turned off and only my desktop on - same thing - when the new laptop tries to connect the desktop loses connection. Called comcast and they had me connect the new laptop directly to the modem and I was able to connect to the internet. So then, I re-connect the router and hard wire only the new laptop to it and it will not connect. So, I am at a total loss as to what to do - Comcast of course says it's not them and I'd have to agree it's not - the computer store says it's not them and again I'd have to agree with that since it will work at my nephew's house - BUT .... where is the problem? the router? could it be the router even though it works fine with the desktop and other laptop? and even though my nephew's router didn't seem to work here?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Frances
