Problems connecting my laptop to wireless network

I looked at grandms thread about her network problems and followed the advice there - but nothing worked. Here's my story:

I have always had a problem on my 1 1/2 yo thinkpad (XP). Sometimes it connects to my home wireless network right away - other times i have to press repair this connection - and it disables the network adapter - and does something else to fix it and connect to the wireless network. Now, however, that is not working. It says "windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: connecting to the wireless network."

When I click "view available wireless networks" it says no wireless networks were found in the range (I know there are 4 in my range) - make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on. I'm not certain what the wireless switch is - but when I go to device manager - and go to "intel wireless WiFi link 4965AGN, double click it. Under the general tab it says the devise (network adapters) is working properly - and I think I have the latest drivers although I have not checked for a few months - I don't think this is theproblem - I've had some of this issue ever since I got the computer - but now I can't repair it). When I go to the advanced tab, - the top is often on "wireless off". I have repeatedly changed it to "wireless on" - and tried connecting again - but it doesn't work. Sometimes when I go back to check (maybe after rebooting) it is once again on wirelss off. The property is set at 802.11N Channel Width.

One thing I have not tried is disabling or uninstalling the network adapter - because I'm not sure how I would enable - or reinstall if I can't get an internet connection.

I was online yesterday.

The only other possible factor here is that I had to disconnect my main desktop on Wednesday bc. we're having renovations in that room. I did leave the router and modem connected - and had no trouble staying connected to the home wireless network until last night.

So I don't know if this is just a worse version of a problem I've had intermittently ever since I got the laptop - or if something additional has happened. I did not update any software in the past week or so (unless my daughter inadvertently closed firefox and restarted with the latest version - but I don't think she did that last night. She was the last one on it when it was working last night.

Not having my desktop to use - and now no laptop is tough - esp. as I have to finish taxes and use turbo tax. Of course, the renovations were supposed to be finished Friday so I could rehook my computer up - but they're still dragging on and the room is a construction zone (I was able to keep the router and modem sealed off from any dust - it's actually not been a dusty job).

I'm using my husband's laptop to type this - and he can connect to the home network easily. Hope I can solve this soon since I don't have my turbo tax program or data files on his laptop.

Thanks.

Lynn.

I tried zep's advice in the other thread - about making sure it automatically searches for a dns...typing ipconfig...going to run and typing cmd. Didn't help. I did not try booting from safe mode bc. I don't remember how to do that.
