Teenager access help please!

Hello,

We just got our daughter hooked up to the internet but I'm having trouble monitoring her actions. We have d-link router and right now we are using network magic software that came with it. By using this I can see when she got on and off but not where she went. I'm a little nervous about just letting her go anywhere on the net. There is a place to block certain url's but that seems impossible for me to list all the sites I don't want her going to. I did manage to write a few key words and I thought I blocked chat but she was chatting last night. She is taking IT at school so she knows more than I do...yikes!

Also, on the network map shown in network magic, I only see her pc shouldn't I see both hers and ours? Oh, I'm not sharing files or folders either.

If anyone is familar with this software or how to monitor her even if it's for a little while I really would be grateful for some help. We are both running windowsxp, IE7 and use dsl/rr for connection.

The only sure way is to have her computer in the main living area.

How much trust and respect exists between you will determine how you move forward. Are we considering an obnoxious know everything 13 year old or a more sensible 17 year old? If you have trust and respect for each other then sit her down and explain your concerns but tell her you reserve the right to view the 'History' file if you feel she is going outside the boundaries. By default my History folder seems to go back 3 weeks - wow, imagine having Mum spy on me for a 3 week span at any time! On IE7 the history tab can be found by clicking the big Favourites star and then the history tab.

If you set the rules right from the start and both live by them you should do fine. If you waffle she will have won. Of course she will want to investigate the wide world out there and of course she will make mistakes. Even typing Disney wrong in an address can bring unexpected surprises.

Set out your penalties too so she knows what to expect. List them, even to write them down and both sign for future reference is not a bad idea. The ultimate should be the removal of the tower for X amount of hours or days depending on the situation and frequency of breaking the rules.

Being a parent in the computer age is not a pleasant time really. Your daughter always has the option of going to a friend's home where the parents are lax or the local library to get around your rules but that is outside your control. So try to build a trust with her. Good luck.

I feel your frustration...and sadness. Always a well behaved kid, my DD is VERY well liked by kids as well as teachers and family members. She's friendly, outgoing, and kind. ... Elsewhere..... At home she is a chameleon. She'll be 'my daughter' for anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks. Then suddenly, she's sullen, easily angered, private and a stranger, for a few days. I worry about her constantly. Then I talk to people I work with and they assure me that they've all gone through the same things with their daughters. It's all 'normal'. They're creating the necessary distance they need to grow up. My DD started the pushing away phase this year. It was SO hard....on me! It's sad, but once you get past the hurt feelings (as unrealistic as they are) you'll be okay. Kids have to do this...and you just need to be there WHEN THEY NEED YOU...not when you need them. Just be there. The one area I still regulate with an iron fist is the computer. She has access to everything she needs/wants, but I don't allow visiting friends blogs (too obscene as anyone can post on them) and I don't allow AIM/Messenger/chatting. It's too easy for kids to get carried away when chatting online, and for things to be said that normally wouldn't be. Feelings get hurt, clashes occur, cliques form, etc....being a teen is hard enough...they don't need that extra source of stress. When I feel she's mature enough, then I'll allow these things. She has to prove to me that she's ready. Be patient... Understand it's not personal... Give them space... Although I don't care for some of the language in it, there is a good book called "Get out of my life!...but first can you take Cheryl and I to the mall?" This book is great....I had many "Aha!" moments while reading it. Good luck...

To me it looks like there is plenty of room in that closet. You will need to pull everything out and put it back in. but this time, start by hanging another bar from the hang bar so you have double the hanging space. Arrange your hanging clothes by type and color. In the remaining space, find shelves to house the rest of your things.

Google her name and your phone number from time to time...her cell phone number, too. This will insure that this private info is not posted somewhere out there for public view....

I found a friend's daughter via Google while doing a reasearch project for my Adolescent Psychology class.

If you don't trust what she is doing online then sit by her and watch what she does instead of depending on software.

AND talk to her about why you are worried and why you worry about what she does online. She will probably complain but do it anyway with love and care. IF something comes up, she will hear your words and think twice.
