Jennair New Fully Inegrated Refrig vs Thermador Freedom Columns
Comments (4)Jennair fully integrated models need a panel on the top to hide the workings of the frig. It also needs a few inches at the top left open for ventilation. Thermador does not need the top panel, as you already mentioned. These make a big difference if you are truly "integrating" the refrigerator with cabinets. If you are using SS fronts, I don't think it makes much difference since you have already declared that it is a frig there. It made a big difference to me that I do not show a top panel there to say that this is a frig... It also made a difference in terms of the strong horizontal lines that were working with in the kitchen design. I figured if I wanted to show that there was a frig, I would have gotton the Subzero BI model which really had the best interior layout for our needs. The Subzero 700 integrated models had a terrible interior layout in the model that we looked at. The Miele integrated frig could not hold gallon milk jugs. (We asked multiple times, including a visit to a Miele showroom, but no go.) Thermador was the only option for us at 36 inch bottom freezer model, which is all we had room for. The interior layout is great for our needs, and the integration is very well done. Jennair seems a notch below with their white interior plastic bins...... I have not gotten our Thermador yet, but we spent alot of time narrowing down the frig to a Thermador........See MoreNew Miele fridge versus Thermador Freedom Columns
Comments (25)Prompted by the latest posts here, we paid a visit to our local distributor who in the past, has been super helpful and nice to deal with. They did not have the new columns yet. But did show me some of the capabilities in their freezer bottom unit. Note that I am just passing on what we were told :). The Mastercool controls look both cool and not so cool :). On the positive front, you get to set the temp and humidity of each bit electronically. I seem to recall on the Bosch, etc it is those plastic sliders. Those sliders donÂt seem all the functional to me as they are easy to bang into/change. On the down side, she had to touch the controls multiple times to get the system to detect. A real switch to control them would have been better than a touch control that is fussy. The main thing my wife liked, and someone should verify that Bosch series donÂt do, is that you there is a bucket where the ice falls into that can be slid left and right. In doing so, you can then use the entire larger slider under it to fill with ice for parties and such. On doors being easier to mount, she said that once the panels are mounted to the door grid, they are hung and then can be adjusted in that way using some mechanism on the door. She said the time to do this is 75 minutes (!). With the other units, she said the panel needs to be taken on and off to adjust the panels and that is what takes a lot of time. The door panels had heavy stainless rails into which the glass buckets hung. You could push the glass bucket up and remove them without removing the slides which hold not. Seemed nice to have them be this way. On wifi connection, in our case, it is a useful thing in that it can detect unit failure or door being left open. We will be having the unit in our vacation house and hate to come to it after a month of being gone, just to find everything gone bad due to unit failure. Not a huge deal mind you, but useful. I asked if there is a charge and she said "not currently." Not sure what that means as far as them charging in the future. I asked her the cost and she gave me an MSRP of $12,000 for dual 30 inch units. I seem to recall that the Gagg was less than $10K so this is quite a premium for the few features. Availability apparently is pretty poor for the freezer. She said someone just ordered a set and the freezer is scheduled for October! Yikes. Overall, it seems that they have done some homework on refining everything around the core of the unit. I donÂt feel that they have created enough value to go beyond the Gagg unit. But for people where price is no object, I think they should seriously consider Miele. We are not quite in that category although close when it comes to our kitchen remodel :)....See MoreHow long does it take a new Thermador freezer to get cold?
Comments (8)The first time the tech came, he thought that the freezer was in refrigerator mode and he reset it (I was dubious because it wasn't as cold as a fridge either). The next day, the temp was still about 48 degrees so another service call was scheduled for two days later. The same tech came out and with the help of the installer (who happened to be there installing the fridge), it was determined that the door switch was defective. The switch was taped down and now the freezer is cold and making ice while we wait for the new switch to come in. Hopefully that's what it is. I'm a little worried that it's not the switch, but the door not closing properly and therefore not engaging the switch. We'll find out next week. Fingers crossed....See MoreQuestions for Thermador Freedom Column owners
Comments (18)Dianalo, I think you are right about needing more than 18" with growing kids. We do not know yet whether #2 will be a boy or a girl. DH was already shocked I wanted to devote so much kitchen space and electricity to 48" of fridge and freezer when we have always had 36" standard units before. He will think I am nuts when I tell him I now want 54". LOL. Malhgold, I did not realize the units now come with the SS panels included. Do you know if the price went up? (I got quotes in November.) I love the way your two 24" units look together. We will probably have our units on adjacent walls, so I guess the symmetry of size is not as important. Cheril, you are right, we could do faux drawers on the same panel instead of one big slab. Honeychurch, I love the way your FD fridge looks like an armoire. I considered going with a FD for the aesthetics of it, but I was much happier with my old SxS than the bottom freezer model in my new house. (I realize many people feel the opposite.) Kateskouros, I just love your fridge/freezer wall with the concealed counter and appliance garages in between. I would copy your design if I had room in my kitchen. Lascatx, I think you are right about empty space filling up because it is there, whether you needed it before or not. If I had a 30" freezer, I would probably do something crazy like order a quarter bison because the price per pound is better that way, LOL. Thanks for the tip about the Streak Free cloth. I have never had SS appliances before and am nervous about keeping them clean, especially with sticky little hands around. Jamis, your columns (and the rest of your kitchen) look great. We want both units to open to the right, so we appreciate that flexibility with the Freedom units. Breezygirl, I have considered a small upright freezer in the garage, but that would also mean getting rid of something else in the garage. Every inch of wall is taken up by built-in cabinets, workbench, exercise equipment, washer & dryer, bike rack and tool caddy. I guess I could block the side door to the yard, LOL. Bellacucina, thanks for passing the message to Momqs. Momqs, thanks for the guidance on unit and door sizes. We are getting custom cabinets from a great local company who did the cabinets in our last house, so I might wait until the columns are in my garage to let them measure directly for the door panels if we decide to go with wood panels. I have been wondering what to do about install since we will not be buying from a store. I might ask my GC if he knows any installers who are experienced with installing Thermador columns. If not, I will go to local stores to ask, although I am afraid they will not want to help me since I did not buy from them (although I have bought a lot of plumbing fixtures from Pacific Sales). Which ovens and cooktop did you go with? We are debating between Thermador and Gaggenau for the cooking appliances. We will probably go with the 2nd to top of the line Bosch DW because I prefer the curved handles to the pro handles and it is slightly less than the Thermador DW. It sounds like people who have the 24" fridge or 18" freezer would not be happy with that size if they did not have supplemental units elsewhere. Using UC freezer drawers and a separate unit in the garage would fit better in my kitchen than the freezer column, but would cost at least $1,000 more since I could not get a discount on those. Lots to think about....See More- 16 years ago
