Thermador Freedom Columns
Comments (7)I have nothing to say other than I'm about to do the same thing (30" fresh, 18" frozen). I've done a ton of research here and other places, and the bottom line is that people with BAD experiences post about them, but not many people post about how HAPPY they are with something as "appliance-like" as a fridge. Besides, they revamped the line in 2012 so there isn't much to say about the current offerings from a longevity standpoint anyway. That being said, I'm buying from a large and trusted local source who i expect to stand behind them as much as possible. Also, I'm not letting my wife "split" the units like she wants just in case we ever need to replace them with something else. A 48" (or 60" for that matter) opening should be standard enough that we hopefully shouldn't have to modify cabinets down the line if we were forced to replace them in the future....See MoreThermador freedom columns
Comments (9)We have the Thermador 30" Freedom Fresh Food Column (aka refrigerator) and 30" Freedom Freezer Column (aka freezer) and LOVE them! We've only had them installed for a month so I cannot answer about long-term reliability, but the way we actually came to them is because the service centers we called all said they weren't having issues with them. We'd heard horrible things about Viking and not-so-kind about SubZero (although not on par with Viking). We'd also looked at Northland (energy hogs and serious reliability issues) and GE Monogram (couldn't get past the big light hanging down, taking room away from the top shelf), and the Kenmore Pro (so teeny but a great price). Ultimately, we chose the 30" Thermador and I have to say we're glad we did. 30" is the right size for our kitchen, although they do hold less than the old-fashioned 48" side-by-side we'd had .... On the bright side, we can see everything (!) and nothing is getting lost (& stinky) in there. They are incredibly quiet. We did look at the Gaggenau but didn't feel like paying more for stainless interiors -- I like a bright, white interior (as amirm wrote). So far, so very good!...See More36' integrated fridge: Thermador Freedom or SZ 736?
Comments (11)I looked at Miele and SZ. Ruled out Northland (noise and lack of energy efficiency) and GE Monogram (I hated my old GE fridge). I also wanted fully integrated and paneled which left me really with those two choices, although I would have considered stainless if something had cost less and been acceptable. The Miele was more than the SZ. We have a snack station in the kitchen with a fridge freezer drawer from KA (also fully integrated). We took out the icemaker (we have a big icemaker) and it is more than enough freezer space for items you don't want to walk to get (ice cream, waffles, etc.). The rest goes in a large freezer we had built into our laundry cabinets. It is just a frigidaire and was not expensive but is huge and we put cabinets on top of it, pulled forward, and it is recessed between two closets so it looks built in even though it is not. It has worked very well for us (particularly since we would have had another freezer somewhere even if we had a larger one in the kitchen because I have never found freezer space in a fridge to be adequate for our needs and family full of boys and their friends!)...See MorePlease help me decide - Liebherr vs. Thermador Freedom columns
Comments (11)It's a good point about relative number of units sold as compared to number of complaints, and we have thought about that. I have an emotional aversion to Subzero because we are replacing a Sub that has had nothing but problems - among other things, the fridge compressor has broken twice, and then most recently the solenoid valve for the icemaker failed somehow and allowed the unit to flood, freeze completely, and overflow out into the kitchen (which of course happened when we were on vacation so that the flood went through the kitchen floor and flooded the basement also, but I digress....). I didn't realize that Liebherr had sold in the US before and then pulled out, but my understanding is that they have had a good reliability record with their refrigerators in Europe. One of the things making us lean more towards the Liebherr is how new and relatively untested the Thermadors are. My main concern about the Liebherr is the freezer space, but we do have an extra freezer so it shouldn't be a huge issue. My local appliance dealer sells every brand imaginable and services them all themselves. They recommend the Subzero and the Liebherr most highly....See Moreamirm
