Please help with my front elevation
Comments (16)bmh4796, I tend to agree with you that we shouldnâÂÂt try to combine brick and stone, at least on this particular house. Good point about the roofing materials also. I didnâÂÂt take your suggestions as anything other than kindly meant, and thanks for your input. zone4newby, âÂÂover-decoratedâ is a great way to describe what my concern is. Again, agree that either the stone or brick should go. Do you have any suggestion for which would look better? I tend to lean towards stone because I like it, but I donâÂÂt have anything against brick if it would look better. Your idea about the shutters impacting the choice of roofing materials is interesting and a point I hadnâÂÂt considered. Renovator8, if cost wasnâÂÂt a factor IâÂÂd love to use only stone and shingles. However, that may not work with the budget. WeâÂÂre meeting with the builder tonight, so IâÂÂll try to get better estimates from him on the relative costs of shingles v. lap siding v. brick v. stone. Staining the shingles is an option that is on the table. The changing materials half way up the wall is something I had thought would look better as you have suggested. What type windows would you recommend? Again, we are trying to maximize a view from the right side of the house and the rear, so IâÂÂm not sure if window grids would work towards that goal. But, IâÂÂm open to suggestions and changing to double-hung windows, for example, would save us quite a bit. I donâÂÂt care for the cornice returns, as you mentioned, but my husband likes them. IâÂÂm going to keep fighting on this. IâÂÂll talk to the builder about the flashing on stone issue. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. IâÂÂm going to play around with Photoshop a bit and see what I can come up with....See Moresummerfield and others, please help with front elevation

Comments (18)Thank you all for your suggestions. Love the posts but the modifications they would entail are way out of budget. I will take yarvaarks drawing to the nursery when the time comes and try to incorporate her ideas with something that will work with our western exposure and winter climate. We have gotten quotes for paint and walk replacement and that will be where the bulk of our budget will go. The front gable will be resided in the same cedar shakes as the house and painted the same color as the body of the house. The shutters will be replaced with a panel style The house will be painted with SW Duration. The tentative colors are: The body of the house SW Hardware The doors SW Copper Wire. The trim white. The shutters and black. The walks will be Thechnobloc blue 60. Chaplain Grey Yes we are keeping the shutters (but not on the bay window) the vast majority or houses similar to ours in our area have shutters and the house will bare without them....See MoreNeed help sprucing up the front of my house
Comments (5)I agree that the house would look better without shutters. When you remove the ramp, widen the stairs so they're the full width of the area between the posts. Beef up the posts to 6x6 and paint it all white. Add pretty hanging baskets on each post. Pick a pretty blue color for the front door and paint it, along with the screen door the same color. Definitely add larger lights that face down. A pretty lantern style would work well. Paint the downspouts yellow to match the house. I wouldn't add a parking pad-it will look to heavy and ruin the symmetry the house has. I love Cape Cod houses-I lived in one for 26 years. Congratulations on your new house!...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
