please give me some advice to spruce up my front garden!
Comments (14)I was hoping that you all would tell me to rip them out, but to make hubby happy I was entertaining the idea of salvaging some of them. We are in zone 6, Cincinnati. I appreciate the compliments...it is a cute house. It's actually a tri-level sears roebuck-you don't see too many of this style. The proportion of the windows etc keep throwing me off but I just don't have the money to throw at structure right now. I would love to add a small pergola (like this https://www.houzz.com/photos/over-window-pergolajpg-phvw-vp~743169-Window-Pergola-jpg---) over the window to try to balance everything out. I'm a hydrangea, hosta smoke bush kind of girl. I love a relaxed cottage style garden and I feel like it will compliment the house well. Any specific holly suggestions?...I noticed so many beautiful hollies over the winter. I'm so looking forward to getting my hands dirty with this project....I'm still petrified of the bald house look though!...See MoreWant to spruce up the front door a bit. Color?
Comments (45)Squirrelheaven, you do such an awesome job when you photoshop. That's just gorgeous!! Thanks. I was thinking more in line with Benjamin Moore Bottle of Bordeaux maybe??? Catnap that's a great price on those lanterns! I couldn't find anything close to periwinkle blue on the Benjamin Moore chips. I love hydrangeas!!! Will they grow on the north side of the house? I have terrible trouble with shrubs there. This photo is from the summer of '08. We cut down the large shrubs ourselves to clean up the entire area that is why the foundation is exposed. The rhododendrons have grown back and it looks a little bit better. I would definately put hydrangeas there if they would grow. Love the bench idea!! Thanks so much and keep the ideas coming. I really appreciate it!!!...See MoreSpruce up our PNW house for curb appeal
Comments (13)The number one issue is the overgrown shrub on the right. Trim it way, way back. Then post a picture so we can actually see the house. The other thing that jumps out at me is the jumble of stuff at the right-hand side of the driveway. I can't really tell what's there - a hose caddy, a small pot, some pieces of lumber, a few rocks? Clear all of it away and then place ONE BIG pot there with a green plant/plants in it. It doesn't have to be a round pot; you could do a square or rectangle one if you think it would fit better....See MoreNeed ideas to spruce up the exterior of our '30s house
Comments (14)Thank you for all the great ideas! We're definitely going to go with a wood door and I can see that removing the shutters completely is a good idea, although I wonder if I could get away with just one pair in the larger window. I do want to get away from the brown though and go with a lighter color (maybe light taupe) for the entire house (including the parts painted brown). My husband would like to put some scallops up there like some other houses in the area have. We plan on replacing the wood fence with a brick wall. I'm also trying to talk him into adding a "porch" by replacing the bushes in front of the house (which are old and woody) with brick and putting a trellis in that area designed to look porch-like. I've seen some in the neighborhood that look really nice. Thanks again for the comments and suggestions!...See MoreNewenglandgardenerct
