Holiday Help Needed.......

If you were to go on a Caribbean holiday....where would you go....Mayan Rivera.....Dominican Republic.....or Cuba? I want to surprise my Husband for his birthday. Where would you go? Diana55

Really depends on what you want to do. There are busy islands with lots of shopping, golf, sightseeing, deep sea fishing, scuba, snorkeling etc. and there are islands that are sleepy where you can just grab a hammock and a book. For slow island I loved St. John. Beautiful beaches and real laid back and relaxed. I loved Aruba too. Enough to do and still time to relax. There is a place called Baby Beach at the far end of the island. We were the only ones there and it was like The Blue Lagoon. Just amazing. I love to cruise too. Lots of stuff to do if you want to, or do nothing if you are so inclined and you stop at a different island every day or two.

I've always wanted to go to Saba too, but have never quite made it. No beaches there...just a small interesting island.

Wherever you go...HAVE FUN!

Improving foot traffic: You have to reach people who are not connected with the school. Post a listing on Craiglist. See if your town will allow signboards to be put up at major intersections, or signs posted around town the day before. Alert any assisted living facilities or the like about the event. They are often looking for good ideas for short trips for their residents. Ask vendors if they will post a poster in their store (if they have a storefront). You can also go around town and see if any other stores would be willing to have a poster up for a week or two. And some completely unsolicited advice, based on this: "As I'm quickly finding out, filling all the different sub chair positions with parents is like pulling teeth. I'm about ready to bail myself. " Sometimes, when you really can't get anyone to volunteer to help, or not nearly enough people, then it's time to cancel holding that activity and time to come up with something else. Volunteers get burnout. And if not enough people in the organization are willing to do the work to pull off the fundraiser, then it's time to stop holding it. (Not this year, but for future years.) What happens is that when the announcement is made that the event is cancelled, either new people who care enough about it step forward to manage it, or everyone breathes a sigh of relief that they don't have to go through that again. There are other fundraising ideas out there. Maybe this one has reached retirement age.

I know those rules sound crazy but they've been refined over the years of playing this game. I call it the Greed Game because the object of the game is, well, to be greedy! You're supposed to steal. I've played versions of this game many many times and I've found two immutable facts: 1. People LOVE to open a new wrapped gift. The thrill of finding out the unknown is hard to resist. 2. This game is no fun if there is no stealing. 2.a. The corollary to this is that if a few people get to steal while everyone else sits (usually with an "unpopular" gift in their lap) and watches the others having all the fun, it's REALLY not fun. So, my crazy rules solve both of the above. Everyone gets to open a new gift (yay!) and everyone gets a chance to steal (double yay!). Inevitably, if there are some gifts that NO one wants, SOMEONE will still end up with them. BUT at least the playing of the game will be fun! Thanks Sweeby for posting the rules (again!). It's actually nice to have them written up and I'm going to save them for the next time someone asks me for them, as they often do. Work in Progress - have fun!

Westsider--Yes, I found a Pratt and Larson tile. I was supposed to get a couple of samples in the correct size and color last week, but they messed up my order again. I'll post pics when it gets here, unless they have another "miscommunication" at the showroom. The party was a success!! I'm not sure what happened with the people who made comments over the last months about arugula being a nasty weed and that capers were sickening, but everyone ate, and ate, and ate, and enjoyed the food! The woman who couldn't believe she ate capers stopped in her tracks when I told her that she also ate anchovies in that tapenade so loved so much. I received lots of praise during and after the party. Thank you all for your help. Most importantly, everyone, including me, had a great time. The group was smaller than expected as none of the husbands came, and a couple of families had the flu strike them at school that day. I think it all worked out for the best as we women just gathered in the kitchen to laugh, listen to Christmas music, talk, and eat apps while I finished plating and garnishing the main course. It was just how I hoped it would be. I ended up spending more time the night before on my son's project and having another commitment at my son's school that day, so I had to adjust the menu a bit to accommodate less cooking time. For apps I did a sour cream, herb, and cucumber dip with fresh veggies and blanched haricot verts and asparagus as suggested. I also did tapenade with crostini and Kathy Casey's sexy baked olives and feta. For the main course I did the cold beef fillet with sherry wine vinaigrette served on arugula with shaved red onions, haricot verts with walnuts and lemon vinaigrette, scalloped blue cheese potatoes, and the citrus salad with mint sugar. For dessert, I made the eggnog tiramisu trifle, cream cheese swirl brownies, and leftover lemon ginger cookies. We drank lots of prosecco, wine, and the hot buttered rum I made for the first time. The kids drank the spiced apple cider. I also had a beverage dispenser filled with water, lemons, and cucumber a friend termed "spa water." Sounds so snobby to me. ;) For compumom, here are the three recipes for which you asked. Eggnog Tiramisu Trifle http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Tiramisu-Eggnog-Trifle-108981 Tapenade In a food processor, pulse 1 garlic clove and 1 t fresh thyme leaves until minced. Add 1 1/4 c pitted kalamatas, 4 drained anchovy fillets, 2 T capers, 2 t lemon juice, and about 4-5 T EVOO and process until coarsely pureed. It's best fresh, but can keep a couple of days in the fridge. Cold Fillet of Beef with Sherry Wine Vinaigrette

I need advice on using burlap in holiday decorating

All burlap is not equal as others have found. I have 2 runners I made of burlap left-over from another craft project. It was years since I bought it so it might have aired out further altho I don't remember it ever having an undesirable scent. This 'decorator burlap' also seems to be stiffer and finer weave than the burlap coffee bags I bought more recently. They are coarse and smelled of both burlap and coffee beans. I washed them on gentle in the machine, dried them flat, and the smell greatly diminished so it's not objectionable. I expect the burlap that has a chemical scent has been treated with insect repellent which is common with products shipped from tropical or 3rd world countries. I used to have a store and products made in China often had such an odor. I always washed my hands well after unpacking them and advised my staff to do so also.

St. Croix is very nice. I loved it. My only problem with it was when I was in the main town and found drunk bums laying around and a lot of litter and beer bottles laying around. Mind you, that was about 14 years ago, so they may have cleaned things up since then. We stayed at a beautiful place that had private patio's and the people were extremely friendly. I would go back for sure. St. Thomas for shopping, St. Croix for in-between and St. John for laid back beaches. Anywere you go will be a nice break from Canada, although I know there are beautiful serene places there, just different in the tropics.

If I remember correctly we stayed at the Buccaneer on St. Croix. Very nice place. Rooms were tasteful and private patios facing the sea. Very nice indeed.

There are so many nice places in the caribbean that is really is hard to tell you where you should go.

Do your homework and check out the deals and go from there.

There may still be some restrictions for Americans traveling to Cuba - I would check on that (man, I would love to go!)

In my other life (before kids), I worked for a Mexican and Caribbean wholesaler and traveled extensively throughout the islands and Mexico. My heart belongs to Mexico. I just love their culture - if I had to pick my fave Caribbean island I would pick Jamaica (Ocho Rios or Negril). But like Duker said - it depends on what matters to you.

I loved The Moon Palace in The Mayan Riviera. I just think The Mayan Riviera has it all. Great flights into Cancun - excellent infrastructure, great to just kick back but you have nightlife options or culture if you want it. If you want gambling then stick with the Caribbean. All inclusive is the way to go!

Yes, I am Canadian Maggie, so that's not a problem going to Cuba. I have been checking things out on the Internet, and they all look nice. Linda.....a Cruise is not an option, as my husband hates boats. I don't know why, but he does. He say's he feels sick the whole time he's on one,
but I think it's all in his head. LOL I checked out "Baby Beach" Duane and that looks wonderful.It is alot like that Movie "Blue Lagoon" We are very much Sun people, and we love the Heat. I guess that's because we are stuck up here in the rain all the time. We love shopping, the beach, golfing, walking, snorkeling, relaxing and gambling too. We love it all, that is why I'm finding it hard to decide. I'm now of to check out the other places you have suggested. Thanks !!! Diana55

I have two friends from the Dominican Republic. They both recommend the place very highly--say it is less intense than some of the other places. My one friend is a teacher and says he's fixed all his colleagues up with great vacations there. I have no first hand experience.
